The 'stepwise decline' mentioned in the vascular dementia part has been proven to be less common than previously thought, mostly because small vessel vascular dementia is more common (than large vessel dementia, which could cause stepwise decline) and the damage is more diffuse and less noticeable, which leads to a gradual decline just like in Alzheimer's disease.
