One Thousand and One Nights is a very old book and it is in the public domain as a result, so they could still do it today. This is also why something like Aladdin doesn't have legal issues.

As a regular Commander player, those choices for the Smothering Tithe award are hilarious.
I checked the EDHRec ranks, and of the 73 Arabian Nights cards legal in the format, Old Man of the Sea is the 34th most played card (in 200 decks total) and Ifh-Biff is 51st (in 83 decks).
The actual most played card in the format BY FAR is City of Brass at over 190,000 decks, with Oubliette in a very distant second at 17,250 decks (largely black devotion). After that, Desert is in 9,620 decks thanks to the Amonkhet deserts-matter theme, and then the next best card is under 3,000 (Bazaar of Baghdad, which is somehow legal in this format).

while if i was picking i would pick desert, its just a very cool idea, appealing to basically anyone who has a interest in the history of the middle east/northern africa , some people would immediately be like "i want to make/ can i build a desert deck" upon seeing the card, and commander is the only thing where it would fly, isnt having them pick something from the perspective of someone who doesn't play commander more interesting then to just google the most played card and going "that one!"? anyone can do that. i guess maybe, i dont play commander so i wouldnt know, but itd surprise me.

Definitely sleeping on City of Brass in many of the award categories. An absolute slam dunk for Smothering Tithe, certainly a respectable top 3 for Vintage cube and I would personally have it as an outside, workhorse winner of the set - over the course of Magic history, it helped so many decks to function and win. Maybe its many reprints and mechanistic bottom-up design make it feel like less of an Arabian Nights card?

Heya guys. Love the vids. Old man of the sea is indeed printed as Marid but it's not because he's a rebel. Marid is actually a different type/tribe of Genie. Basically along with Djinn, Efreet you would also have Marids. So it makes sense that they later rolled him into Djinn.

I love Arabian Nights! I started playing back in 96', growing up in Queens NY... it was very hard to find ABU & the 4 horseman packs anywhere. My local card stores carried Mirage, Visions, Ice Age, Homelands, 4th ed, Chronicles, & Fallen Empires. However, two years later in 98' I found out about Neutral Ground in Manhattan NYC because of Type II Tournaments. This is where I first met Brian Marshall (cool dude). Neutral Ground introduced me to 93-94 Magic where I first saw Juzam Djinn, Moxens, Black Lotus, etc.. I remember buying used revised dual lands for $8-$12. I miss the smell of the 90's magic cards...=)

It's a funny coincidence that Al-Qadim (for D&D) and Disney's Aladdin were both released in 1992. It seems very likely that some combination of those influences helped decide the theme for Magic's first expansion, by putting the 1001 Nights into the American zeitgeist generally, as well as into the specific gaming nerd sphere.

It's really interesting how nonbasic lands got a different look in each set in the early days. AN has that sandy color in the textbox with a light brown frame, AQ's is darker framed with a reddish textbox, Legends has a light gray frame with a gold textbox, The Dark had purple hues in its frame and a purple textbox, etc. Alliances uses what seems to be an update of the Dark's, Ice Age is like that but a bit lighter, Mirage uses a purple textbox kinda like IA but different... the lands in Urza's Saga mirror their colors. Finally they standarized it with Mercadian Masques and stuck with that.

Hi guys, great video! Your content is absolutely top quality!
I look forward for your Antiquities video!
I want to say something personal about the "changed reprints" you talked about at 00:51:27. I have always hated them, especially the Sixth Edition ones! The one I hated the most was Castle in Sixth Edition, which removed the "unless attacking" clause. But there were a bunch of functionally changed reprints in Fourth Edition and Chronicles as well. Examples include Ghazban Ogre, El-Hajjaj, and some cards from Legends. Fog at a certain point had three different versions: ABU, Revised and 4th! I hope you can find the time to talk about these reprints in your next videos, if you plan to talk about the core sets and Chronicles as well.
Finally, a quick small correction. At 00:00:56 you say that between Unlimited and Revised there were "a bunch of expansions" and you listed Arabian Nights, Antiquities, Legends and The Dark. Actually, Revised came out between Antiquities and Legends, so only two of those were in between.

Much of the power of Juzam Djinn was contextual. The 5 power gave it a quick clock for its cost, making it a worthwhile threat that could be powered out on the first turn with Black Lotus or turn two with a Dark Ritual. The 5 toughness meant it couldn’t be killed with Lightning Bolt (unlike other 4 mana powerhouse Juggernaut) and being black meant it was immune to Terror.

Sure but they also wouldn't print anything you could consider comparable or better until Argothian Wurm in Urza's Saga? Maybe Blastoderm in Nemesis? Deadbridge Goliath has no downsides and the same cmc and p/t but that's 2012! Balduvian Horde springs to mind for same stats/cmc but it's way worse. Juzam Djinn was so overstatted for the era. Everything else you mentioned was just a bonus.

Good job on this one, and good to see you correct the timeline error in the last show (Unlimited did come out before Arabian Nights and it was December 1993).
I can confirm the 2003 sealed case auction price -- it was at GenCon SoCal. Peter Adkison was in attendance and said there that there was none of that set held back -- they shipped it all. While he didn't state it directly, he implied that this was the last set where this was true.
In general, the light cards are less common than the dark versions -- some (two, I think), however, are the same rarity. There are officially 14 variants, and two potential variants (Camel and Desert). Let the arguments begin.
Finally, with the caveat that I am against all post censorship in gaming, my response to "it's just one card" is it's not -- it's already seven, and potentially growing -- where does one stop? We will not learn from our mistakes if we pretend they don't exist.

    • @penguinlust6749
      @penguinlust6749 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@r.a.3829 There are 14 recognized variants -- you'll find them on the old official set lists. However, as mentioned in the video, some people claim there's a variant of Camel. It's subtle -- if it exists (they show a picture in the video -- I don't see it). This has been argued over for the last 30 years. Desert clearly has a variant -- often called "campfire", "mirage", or "cave" -- it's really obvious, happens on 2 of 11 cards on the plate (Desert is a C11), shows up on eBay (there's a few there now), and is unacknowledged by any official list (though CGC -- a card grading company -- recognizes it).

  • @JonaxII

19:00 "this is pulled from existence, you couldn't do this today for some legal reason" - Well, you could, it's publicly domain. Problem with that is only that it remains public domain if you use it. They could make public domain based cards galore, but only the exact card text and the artwork would be copyrightable. The Characters used would still be publicly unowned, and a company really doesn't like not owning their stuff, which is why.

Since none of the top comments seem to have one, here's an old Shahrazad story! It seems only fitting, given the intended flavor of the card after all...
The year is 2009. Commander (then still primarily known to the average player as EDH) has just exploded in popularity amongst the local scene of a US city and state I won't bother to name. Keep in mind at this point in time there's a lot less structure, no "official" banlist to refer to since we were still pretty far off from WOTC recognizing the format. Our area's largest central LGS has begun holding weekly events consisting of a single free-for-all multiplayer game with prizes based on kills, and I'm attending for what was to my memory the second time, with a horrendous infinite turns deck featuring Teferi as my commander... But this story isn't about me. No, the central character of this tale is a random player from out of town who was marking their first attendance of the store proper, one who made the tragic decision shortly beforehand of purchasing a copy of Shahrazad (which had been proudly displayed in a top shelf area of the glass case at the front) with the intent to include it in their deck for the upcoming game. I was one of a few amongst those in attendance who observed and took notice this transaction taking place, but I simply braced myself for the potential possibility and said nothing, hoping they wouldn't draw it or that by the time they did someone (potentially me even) would have countermagic available.
The fated time for our scheduled event to begin arrives, there's something like 10 players total including myself. We all sit down, shuffle up and do our best to find our own comfortable space at the table. Mulligans and die rolls are performed, and everything seems fine... But then, before half of us had so much as played a second land, there it was: The dreaded subgame generator, cast off a pair of basic plains by this complete stranger who happened to end up fairly early in the turn order. Nobody had the game piece necessary to prevent it from resolving, but what occurred instead was arguably worse: A heated debate swiftly ensued over how to proceed, since there was a strongly held sentiment across the entire rest of the table that not only was there a practical limitation of time (the store simply couldn't accommodate two full-length games featuring this many players at this point in the evening, given when we'd started) but even if there had been sufficient free time available... _Nobody_ except the player who cast it was willing to go through the motions. Tempers flared quickly, and despite one unfortunate soul's best intentions a vote was soon held. The outcome: Shahrazad was banned, effective immediately.
Most of us did feel bad for this person who had effectively just spent nearly a hundred dollars committing a serious social faux pas, however the vote was unanimous. The game was restarted, and given we'd only just begun in the first place this player was presented the option to enter our restarted game despite the offense, so long as Shahrazad was replaced. They declined and promptly left the store instead, never to return.

I am working on a complete set of ARN. I have at least one playset of each common, 100 Flying Men, and most of the uncommons. I still need 11 cards, which unfortunately are the most expensive ones.

Oubliette is one of the best AN commander cards because phasing out someone’s commander is quite strong. Because of the commander rules if you exile someones commander they can rezone it back to the command zone. If you phase it out it hasnt changed zones so its stuck until the oubliette is destroyed.

Cedric is right, 'Magic' italicised can be found on several un-cards, Booster Tutor comes to mind, or Opening Ceremony. I think Gus & Ghazban Ogress have Magic, but it's bold not italics.

At the 13 minute discussing rarities in the packs does anyone think there will be an issue similar with play boosters when they release this month?
I recall TCC mentioning there will be more UC’s per pack. Giving me the impression they will be the new C

I feel like the djinn/ efreet cycle having four cards… you failed to mention that white got the antithesis card in King Sulieman!
You failed to mention- there’s a variant on DESERT. Kind of a misprint, but look up the “mirror” version or “campfire” version. BGS will differentiate the error version. Also Rush Egg, the wording confused players, and would literally discard the card on turn one to make it work.

Will back Diamond Valley winning awards - It is a MVP in my Child of Alara lands/gates deck. It’s a very narrow card, but in the right deck is a house.

There aren`t 93 but 92 different cards as I know, you said Camel has 2 versions but I only know one. Everywhere online there is 1 Camel version and 92 different cards. Please let me show me if I`m wrong, got the set complete except of the 2nd Camel...

Green: You can have cards if you have creatures.
Red: You can have cards but you have to play them now.
Black: You can have cards but you have to pay life or sacrifice things.
    Blue: You can have cards.
    White: You can't have cards.
This is the main reason that white historically falls behind.
