Similar to deployment on a sub: the first week and last week take forever. Everything inbetween is like a timewarp. Then you get home, and none of the music on the radio is the same, and there's a brand new strip mall where a forested cliff used to be.
Just wanted to say thank you Matt. The work that the NHS does is very good and it’s a testament to that that you still upload twice a week. I play the bagpipes in tribute to the the people like you every Thursday. Thank you Matt, for being so committed, and for also maintaining the video quality! But if you need to take a break we would all understand, so don’t be afraid of you need to!
I’ve had the problem were the “flaps” as I like to call them, only pitch one way and I believe it’s a glitch that after detaching something from the vessel, the game has trouble finding the control point of the craft. And that means that the flaps don’t know what to do and only go one way
Awww Matt. You're so sweet :) Don't feel bad for not being able to make long/complex videos while you're busy with work! You and your colleagues are doing amazing work to keep us all safe here in the UK, and I'm not surprised that's your focus. Enjoy some nice whiskey in your downtime - don't stress over KSP. 🥃
Hi Matt, I've had the exact same issue with many different SSTO attempts. From what I understand, the closer your center of lift is to your main control surfaces, the more likely you are to have the exact pitch issues that you're having. I've tried to get in contact with the KSP devs about this, but haven't had any success. Possibly because we're close to KSP 2 by now, and they just can't be bothered. My fix has simply been to put my center of lift slightly farther aft than normal and just deal with the worse takeoff performance in anticipation of the craft handling adequately once the payload is deployed. Anyway, love the videos. Keep it up! -Alex
Have the same problem but mine only ever pitch up, and its only after a short while flying. Always end up having to flip the enitre plane upside down to point it towards the ground.
Skylon has a lot of investor hype behind it and some solid engineering, I’m confident that it’ll be made in some form - even if it doesn’t quite end up being fully orbital!
I think it would be could as I kind of first stage. It would boost a payload up a suborbital trajectory most of the way to orbit. The it coasts to apogee and releases the pay load with a small stage for orbital insertion.
Oh man. I've been watching your videos for years, and I just now realized you build multi-summetry parts on the nose of the craft to properly root them together before transferring them to parts already containing symmetrical roots. I'll never not do this again.
It happened to me on a mission to eve, i was so frustrated because took me so much time on that particular mission but after hours i found that i was pressing alt accidentally while moving the aircraft so the natural controls of the aircraft moves. you can correct that if you press alt and move the picth, roll to the correct orientation
Why does this video have a dislike 5 minutes after release. WHY DOES THIS VIDEO HAVE A DISLIKE 5 MINUTES AFTER RELEASE. WHAT DOOMED MORTAL SOUL HAS DONE THIS
Hey, I enjoy your videos, hyper ambitious or not, and honestly, I am crap at SSTO missions, so this was plenty impressive to me! We know times are tough right now, and honestly I appreciate that you are still putting in the time to make any videos!
A video describing all of the useful gravity assists to hop around the system would be really useful! It seems like in your head you have a roadmap of how to get to each celestial body in a really efficient way and it'd be great to hear you give an overview.
I think I can speak for everyone when I say we don’t mind the videos being uploaded a little later than usual if it’s because you’re helping others in your field.
For the Ailerons... I'd suggest 2 things... Move the ones Internal outside the Craft., as they are going to screw with how the Aerodynamics Model is Calculated; and ensure that you have a correctly orientated Flight Core (I think you're using a Drone one here) that is positioned outside of the Main Body of the Craft. I've found it tends to happen more often with Remote Control Craft Vs. Piloted Craft (even if there is no Pilot, just provided you have a Cockpit of some description).
I would love to see more use of the atmospheric stage concept from the star wars hyper ring, just not in that shape. Using a stage made of air burning engines and wings with maybe a probe is a very cool idea, and can make launching many rockets much more efficient. Like... make a SSTO that resembles a glider, and it carries payloads in a faring attached to its bottom! :D
Bless your soul you have two essential jobs, healthcare and entertainment you must be stressed but your videos are as close to perfection that I have to rate these over 9,000 /10
I've said it before and I'll say it again, SCRAMJets for the secondary air-breathing stage. That's the key to an IRL SSTO. They can operate at much higher speeds and altitudes than conventional jets.
Alt+X resets trim, basically. You can trim your craft so that it will have constant yaw, pitch, or roll input. If you ever have a craft in KSP that "wants" to spin no matter how many times you reset SAS, you probably accidentally trimmed the controls by holding ALT and the movement keys.
Matt idk if you knew this but sometimes while trying to takeoff you can retract the gears before you lift off, and you can get up before the end of the runway
Please thumb this so Matt can see it. Alt X resets the trim of the craft. Trim is an intended function as pilots use it to preset their pitch angle so when they're flying, they can let go of the controls and cruise without descending. In order to use it in ksp, you press Alt and whichever WASD direction you'd like to trim toward. I struggled a lot with this when I used to play ksp on xbox.
Elevons change theirs pitch if they are in front of or behind the center of gravity so when you removed the cargo you changed the center of gravity and the elevons changed as well.
One trick you might like: Use a small fairing recessed a bit with a sharp point. It can make for a much better looking nosecone, as well as having less drag, more heat resistance, and you can still dock by having a docking port under it. Here's an example in action: imgur.com/QDqUfLp
I have encountered elevon bug aswell, especially when trying to make flying wings. I solve it using controller and program manually deploy angle based on pitch input.
10:10 that happens to me every time i play ksp, all i do is holding L1 on my ps4 controller (the button you hold down to change the throttle more precisely). I don’t know which key it is on the keyboard, but you know which it is. So try that if it happens again!!
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the problem with the elevons not moving correctly depends on the Part your camera is centered on. like docking, where your orientation changes if you center the cam on the docking port.
The problem with take offs from the runway also comes from the fact that it is absolute flat, meaning that after the midway point you are going uphill.
The elevon issue may be caused by a moving center of mass. I saw this issue in TheBeardyPenguin's Kollaborative Warfare series, and that's how he fixed it.
The spaceplane wings works one way... i tried doing a forward swept wing with it and didnt work. Then when you check the lift vectors using f12 shows the impossibility. There goes my one awesome looking bomber. Not gonna lie... that wing is a beauty.
I don't know if you have done this before or that it is even possible but can you make a ships so fast it can reach light speed? And maybe it would be could if you'd make a habitat orbiting the earth like big big habitat. Only if you want to but I think it would be cool
It might just be me, but I think it would be cool if you built a space plane with drop tanks, so halfway through the flight to space you could drop the tanks and it would look pretty cool.
I hade the same problem with my a10 recreation but it only went up Luckily it is such a good craft so I could go upside down and go down that way then spin quickly and pull up for the runway
Matt, great videos bud. I had this problem with the PS4 version. It was the trim setting. Lower left corner of the screen where the pitch, yaw, roll is and their orange arrows. Adjusting pitch adds pink arrows. I thought it was a glitch too. Take good care man, hope this helps.

I love the look of the spaceplane. Massive SSTOs always look cool!
Elevons glitch when attached to "front" of wings?
It depends on where the wings are relative to the CoM.
Just invert them!

Matt you can toggle the roll/pitch/yaw of control surfaces with an action group
I LOVE SKYLONS
I'm kinda glad you didn't go the extra step and create a space station. It would have completely overshadowed my last KSP video.
I like how you’ve put the nuclear engines in the cargo bay. It makes it look clean
Elevons change theirs pitch if they are in front of or behind the center of gravity so when you removed the cargo you changed the center of gravity and the elevons changed as well.

Sometimes KSP thinks i'm pressing alt and when I pitch during this, it resets the lock you mentioned that can be released with alt+x
You could use the 5m-structural-tubes and make a nose that opens up using hinges to carry the 3.75m-orange-tank
oh the elevon thing, it happens all the tome on enhanced edition, where they only want to either pitch up, even when I pitch down
3:05 me neither, Matt. Its already September
that glitch happened to my minimus and min lander on xbox and i was so confused but sometimes when i quick saves it fixed it.
The elevon issue may be caused by a moving center of mass. I saw this issue in TheBeardyPenguin's Kollaborative Warfare series, and that's how he fixed it.
