Steve, thank you for all the work you did and have done on these camera reviews. I bought into Arlo through multiple generations, then Wyze, then Ring--I have been hoping that Ring would address their actually quite poor image quality, but they haven't. In looking over your videos for Ring cameras, they seem almost the same, model after model, it is so disappointing. You put a positive spin on the Ring ecosystem, but if you buy cameras to protect your home, you want QUALITY, than blurry blobs at night or beyond 10 feet during the day. How about reviewing high quality wired cameras, POE or IP, 2k, 4k and above. Show us what we are missing.

The Spotlight Cam Pro Solar does come with a battery, just for the record. It needs a battery for the camera to function and the solar panel to charge. The only one of the three that doesn't come with a battery is the wired option.

Steve, mobile speeds are up to 100 mbs or so now, so no surprise about your connection speed. You might find it interesting to run a speed test with and without WIFI in your backyard to see what you get. Great content sir!
I’d be hesitant to Guttermouth the camera itself just because if you’re in an area that has any type of wind it’s going to cause the gutter to vibrate and or the camera directly and you’re gonna get a bad image. In my neighborhood we often see winds that are 20 to 40 miles an hour gusts.
Spotlight pro sounds like something great for a low-traffic backyard where overnight activity would be unusual & setting up the motion trigger zone would be helpful. Thanks for the review!
I thought Pro solar has solar AND battery? at least that's what Ring customer service explained to me, and thats what I decided to purchase. so that I have flexibility to change the battery if solar didn't have enough sun (gloomy winter days) or I decided to change the placing of the camera where solar panel would not have any access to sunlight?
Hello ! Quick question does the camera still records/ alerts if it’s not connected to Wi-Fi ? For example if Internet signal goes out will it still work ?
One thing i wish i knew before i bought a ring cam, is that it just a “record events” camera, there are few times where it misses events even with me maxing it, and sometimes there will be something happening outside of the zone, but oh know because i didn’t cover that zone, i cant see what happened
I bought the regular Ring stick up cam, not the pro and it seems to turn on only after the person has almost already finished passing by. I have the detection set to maximum so I was disappointed at how long it took for it to turn on. So I’m probably going to return it to Costco and get something else, possibly the Ring pro. But I’m curious which camera you would recommend of any brand? I’d like to get 2 cameras and keep the cost around $500 total if possible but I’m not sure if I can get 2 cameras of good quality for that price. Any recommendations?
Great review. A few questions: It's almost always cloudy here in New York. We probably get 2 or 3 nice days of sunshine a month. Do you think that would work for the solar panel? I want to plant one of these on a tree to keep an eye on my driveway and house. And I do have the ring doorbell now. Do you have any indoor cameras? If only using the batteries, how long would power last?
I like Wyze and Reolink. They both need microSD cards to save clips directly to the camera. Even Arlo has a way to save clips locally to it's base station, but it's kind of clunky.
Great video sir! At one time I was hung up on 2k 4k high resolution wireless cams. But I really like how far Ring have process since emerging with Amazon and the great improvements in the Alexa app. Now without having to setup a skill on the Alexa app.tYou now have the ability with the Echo show 5 and 8 plus your other Alexa devices. Where you can get announcements on your echo device. When motion is being recorded and on top of that. On your echo show 5 and 8 you will not only get a announcement. They will also display what ever cause the Ring cams to record. With that being said if you add the Ring DIY aiarm system monitor or self monitor and ring glass break sensor. I feel is the complete package. Man I tell you those ring glass break sensors all really good. I have to 3 incidents where I have the Ring alarm set to home. I was was dishes a plate hit another plate and set it off. I dropped a medium size box with the item still in it and it set it off. In my bathroom I shut the vanity door to hard or it was the shower door. But anyway the alarm went off. I have to add I have the glass break sensor wherever there's a window in the house. Personally I think Ring and Amazon echo devices tried together is a complete DYI home alarm system in my opinion. It's ok to get a notification on your phone that you probably won't hear from sleeping. But it's better to get a announcement plus a visual of what is causing the Ring Cams to show on a Echo show 5 or 8. On your night stand next to your bed at night. If you don't have pets outside to set them off you shouldn't have a problem. Again great video keep them coming.
So what camera and what camera system do you recommend? I like the Simplicity of Wireless I like the solar panel charging . I need long range and through walls and about 2 to 300 ft away also for some outbuildings. Most need to be mounted to the gutter around the house at least want one on all four sides and then one about 100 ft away and what about 300 ft away from the router. I like the alerts but I also wish it would record 24/7. The only cameras I have experience with now are the Arlo ones from Costco and they are not bad except for they are not charging correctly and they don't get very good range far away. I don't know which one has the better operating system and works best with the cell phones... ?
Am I able to pair it with Telus security camera? I have amazon echo show 5. I also have a dlink that records with icloud. Does Ring Spotlight Cam Pro record as well?
Steve great video ! I just installed mine but the video quality sucks and it drags . Do you think if I have it plugged in or put a solar it will work like yours ?
@@SteveDOESdo you know if it's possible to connect these to your mobile phones mobile hotspot as I don't have a WiFi router as I buy unlimited data from my mobile provider
Excellent review as always, Steve, thank you! I agree with you about the video quality, but also agree with Ring's outstanding features, which does weigh in their favor. However, being a fairly expensive camera with only passable quality. I would like to buy in more into their ecosystem (I have their doorbell pro and alarm system and monitoring), but am a little hesitant because of pricing. I do like having their service, though, which covers their products and allows me to add additional products and automatically expands coverage. Right now, I have Arlo Pro and Blink cameras outside, and a bunch of Wyze inside. Clearly, my wife and neighbors think I am a maniac. Anyway, I do have a couple of questions (as usual) for you. Since I need the outside cameras to be battery and wifi, due to lack of available outlets, what's your recommendation for overall best outdoor battery cameras balanced between quality, features, price, and battery life. My second question is: what is the battery life of this ring pro camera and does adding a second battery double that battery life? Thank you!
Hey Bill, sounds like you have as many cameras as i do. haha So as for best overall camera, i did a video about a year ago, and Arlo Pro 3 was my favorite. If you already have a Ring subscript that covers all your cameras, i'd recommend sticking with them. Now as far as battery life, that's hard to predict and why you can't find much information about it. It's all going to depend on your camera settings and how active the area is. Is it on the side of the house that no one goes on or is it in your front yard and getting triggered 30 times a day? This is just an educated guess, but i'd say the batteries will last anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 months. Also, adding a second battery in the Ring Spotlight Pro will double the battery life. If you find that the battery is running out too fast you can always add on a solar panel later down the road. I'm using the smaller 1.9W panel and both my batteries are toped off right now.
@Steve DOES Thank you very much as always, Steve! That information truly provides me with the education I needed! Glad to see that you still rate the Arlo at a high level. I appreciate it - you are the best!
Hi Steve, Thank you very much for a clear and informative review. Very helpful and has convinced me to purchase one of these. Question: What's the furthest it can be fitted away from a wifi router?
Thank you for the "pros" on the PRO ;-) - I've been a RING customer for many years and can't see switching. One of the biggest things for me is the speed of the alerts/notifications and the fairly comprehensive sensor choice (took a while for things like glass breaks detectors, etc. to come to market) - the 3rd party options while they may not have full functionality are usually useful and easy to add to your system. I'm sort of a DIY hobbyist but want a security / alarm system that just works without relying on ITTT or more than one base / gateway. The price for monitoring / cam storage is good too - you can find less expensive but the quality and reliability of the app / cloud infrastructure is very much on-par with traditional/legacy alarm monitoring services at a fraction of the price.
Steve, how far away does the camera detect motion? I just bought this to find out where a cat is getting through my fence and using my yard as it’s place to poo. I live on an acre. Trying to figure out where to place the camera. Thank you!
I bought the gutter mount for the Cam 0lus an solar but the way the mount is it'll be pointing directly to my neighbors house 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ has anyone found a way to have the camera part ball more adjustable to point more left
Hi Steve. I'd buy this as I already have the video doorbell 3 and need a security cam on my garage overlooking the cars. Plus the app makes things so much easier 😃😃 BTW, which clear case do you have on your phone please Steve. I need to get one. Many thanks again 🤩🤩
Hello 👋🏻 thank you so much for your very detailed review! You have made it a lot easier for me to choose which security camera to purchase! So I do have a pretty big I should actually say a huge backyard and one part of it falls on the side of the main road, so for security I want to install cameras. in this case I just wanted to know your opinion on if I should purchase the spotlight pro or spotlight plus? I just don’t know which one would work best for me and I can’t decide because im really don’t know much about them all I know is that I want my house protected even though we have security cameras inside the house all over i’m just too paranoid not to have any outside of the house as well. 😅😅
What is your opinion on the RIng Pro vs the Eufy Homebase 3? Considering Eufy now offers 24/7 monitoring just like Ring does, and 4k cameras, with built in solar panels, does Ring really offer anything to compete with Eufy? They are both compatible with Alexa, both offer 24/7 monitoring, but the cameras for Eufy are vastly superior in my opinion in both clarity, and vastly superior battery longevity, no needed exterior solar panel. Am I missing something?
With Eufy's recent security exposure issues, i cant' recommend them at this time, but we'll see how that all plays out. With that said, 4K local storage is going to give you the best picture quality. I see that Eufy 24/7 monitoring is $10mo, but doesn't include any type of cloud storage for that price. It'd be nice to at least get 2-3 days as a backup incase that homebase is stolen. As for the built in solar panel, i love the concept, but i'm a bit hesitant. My experience with security camera solar panels is they last about a year and a half before they just stop working. The only brand that lasted over 2 years was Arlo.
I have a brand new Pro. Set it up and it worked fine for several days. Following a power outage, I can not get the camera to log back onto the WiFi. I’ve done a reboot several times to no avail. I deactivated the camera from my app. I tried several times to “activate a new device”, nothing seems to get me past the Red/Blue flashing light. Any ideas? Thanks
That's exactly what I did, and I have not had any battery drain issues for the last year or so - since I installed it. The batteries remain topped off. According to the Ring app, the two batteries stay between 95% and 100% charged. NOTE: I have the previous version of the battery powered spot light (as he showed toward the beginning of the video at 3:07) mounted over my garage in a high traffic area - motion triggered off about 20-50 times a day. I also have plenty of sunlight most of the day time. It has been through rain, hail, wind, and snow. So far, all is functioning well.
Hi Steve after connecting my Ring to Alexa I can’t seem to pause Alexa notifications when I have the gardener over. I can pause Ring but not Alexa. Do you have a work around this?
I may be different than most as I really don't need 4k video image quality - for me I need to see if there's someone who I do not recognize someplace where they shouldn't be and overall appearance, etc. The reality is that as "evidence" if it's 4k great but too dimly lit or blurry then it's about as useful as 720. Give me quick alerts, live view, faster video review and useful features over 8k HDR Supreme ;-)
Does the camera has an option to turn off the spotlights when it's not needed? Say I have get together in the backyard and I don't want the lights to turn on every single time, can I do that?
I do like the ecosystem but this camera quality is 'worse' than the Stickup Cams IMO. The video stutters and colour is just not the same. There is a feature where the light can come on and go off at dusk/dawn etc. That doesn't work in the UK. I did complain and apparently that will be fixed around April. I had bought this because I wanted the better FOV but feels over priced for what it is.
Why does the camera skips time….like if I want to see at 530am it skips all the way to 630am so there is a 30 minute gap where it doesn’t record and it sometimes skips up to three hrs. Why does it skips?
It is motion activated. If there is no motion going on there is going to be a time gap between recordings. This device is not made to record 24/7. I think what you’re looking for is a CCTV security camera system.
hi, thank you for all the info.... i bought these also for inside? any reason why i should NOT use this inside and return them to get the stick cam? thank you!!!
I've had issues with Ring's quality, I struggle to reconmend them. On my third doorbell (first and second failed), second spotlight camera over the driveway (first one failed), and backyard spotlight camera that has failed audio. All have had different failures. Also having issues with the app on a Samsung phone. Thumbnails take over 30 seconds to load now. One camera the timeline doesn't load without changing settings. All in all very disappointed in them. Looking at others to move away from Ring.
I have issues with Samsung and my nest doorbell. Works fine with my iphone. About to add some ring spotlights as my cousin love his. I wonder if it's an android or samsung issue.
@@KurPee I haven't used Nest, just Ring. As far as Samsung and Ring, I had problems a few months back with live view not updating, but that has since resolved.
Considering the pricing of the Ring ecosystem including the video quality it's still good. Better video quality would be much more expensive in another ecosystem with everything else at the same level. Even professional surveillance systems like was used in the school I worked for, is not much better video quality than Ring.
Not impressed with video do you not understand what 1080p means it's not 4k my guy lol the siren enough to scare someone off. Seeing a camera enough to keep someone away.
Who in their right mind would purchase a battery dependent security cam? Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaa HARD WIRED connection is required for dependability. Hi Steve after connecting my Ring to Alexa I can’t seem to pause Alexa notifications when I have the gardener over. I can pause Ring but not Alexa. Do you have a work around this?
I feel like 2K cameras gotta use the battery up quicker also right ?
I may be different than most as I really don't need 4k video image quality - for me I need to see if there's someone who I do not recognize someplace where they shouldn't be and overall appearance, etc. The reality is that as "evidence" if it's 4k great but too dimly lit or blurry then it's about as useful as 720. Give me quick alerts, live view, faster video review and useful features over 8k HDR Supreme ;-)
Does the camera has an option to turn off the spotlights when it's not needed? Say I have get together in the backyard and I don't want the lights to turn on every single time, can I do that?
Yes, there is a setting to turn of motion activated lights.
Awesome, thank you!@@SteveDOES
Is it possible to mount it outside in the rain with the USB-C plug in cable in it? How can it be waterproof???
I do like the ecosystem but this camera quality is 'worse' than the Stickup Cams IMO. The video stutters and colour is just not the same. There is a feature where the light can come on and go off at dusk/dawn etc. That doesn't work in the UK. I did complain and apparently that will be fixed around April. I had bought this because I wanted the better FOV but feels over priced for what it is.
Why does the camera skips time….like if I want to see at 530am it skips all the way to 630am so there is a 30 minute gap where it doesn’t record and it sometimes skips up to three hrs. Why does it skips?
You can set how often it records - go to Settings
It is motion activated. If there is no motion going on there is going to be a time gap between recordings. This device is not made to record 24/7. I think what you’re looking for is a CCTV security camera system.
That's damn impressive. Nest has no solar version with floodlights.
hi, thank you for all the info.... i bought these also for inside? any reason why i should NOT use this inside and return them to get the stick cam? thank you!!!
Can you talk thru the camera if it picks up someone on it?
Yes
Nice Review.... Saved me some $$
Glad I could help
The only drawback the time is different from actual time, mine is one hour behind.
if the wifi turns off will the camera not be available to record until the wifi turns back on?
Time for ring to increase the pixels… i guess they are scared how storage will skyrocket so they will stay put as long as possible…
Thank you so much
I prefer the plus
Just an awesome video!! Very well done..Thank You!
It’s now 2024 and Ring still doesn’t have 4k cams. I let my subscription expire and I’m looking for better options.
Thanks!
My Bathroom is bigger than your “Back Yard”… Id hope there wouldn’t be any “Latency”… lol
Considering the pricing of the Ring ecosystem including the video quality it's still good. Better video quality would be much more expensive in another ecosystem with everything else at the same level. Even professional surveillance systems like was used in the school I worked for, is not much better video quality than Ring.
Yea that's a good point. IF Ring had a 2K/4K camera, would someone pay $400/$500 each, and probably a higher subscription fee too? Probably not.
@@SteveDOES - I would
Why is the image on the ring. Cameras so bad ??
I’ll award it points for being innovative, but solar panels don’t do it for me.
if my phone can record in 8K... why in the hell dont any of these cameras record in 4k?
hows the notification? because google nest camera notifications is garbage
Not impressed with video do you not understand what 1080p means it's not 4k my guy lol the siren enough to scare someone off. Seeing a camera enough to keep someone away.
But am glad you showed at night.
Who in their right mind would purchase a battery dependent security cam? Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
HARD WIRED connection is required for dependability. HOWEVER the connection wires currently provided are "UNDER SIZED GUAGE" Daaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Where is the COMMON SENSE here?????
Get with it RING before there are more dependable & better options provided else ware.....
Obviously more people than you think.
Have you EVER installed these newer CHEAP wired cams... I have at least 10 this year.
Ring video quality sucks.. I have 7 cam poor on all cams. Purchased a Reolink far far superior video quality love my Reolink….
Wrong, solar versions has to have a battery which it comes with.
