Hey , just saying for the helicopter boss fight where you said there wasn't a lot of healing but there is actually an hospital in the "arena" where a NPC can heal you and there is also some healing inside too
also at the end there is a ending where you drop the gun with mouse 3 for me and i think it tells the same thing as when Roki explain when he shoot you
@@chlaquemerryoko when i played the mod, i went for the ending where you throw away the gun and roki also throws his away. so maybe you just didn't throw the gun away fast enough and so it didn't properly register or something?

I really liked that almost every human being in Swelter has a unique model, made them feel like actual people instead of generic resistance NPCs.
I just had a thought.... what if all the residents of CITY-17 were under strict "standards", similar to north Korea, and that's why they all look the same
@@daltontaylor5851 HL:Alyx taking place 5 years before HL2 implies that its more of a case that they got stricter overtime. Since Swelter also takes place several years before HL2 its safe to say that the same would apply here.
There is another ending if you choose to drop your gun which in turn causes Roki to drop his as well and the main character says how the Lambda Resistance and the Commune eventually agree to an armistice.
Thought I'd point that out cause there's more than just the two endings that you mentioned in the video.

@@thencrranger5628 interesting, I played a lot of it with the hud disabled to get better looking footage for the video so I probably missed that notification then. Damn it there is always 1 error in my videos that will lead to like 1000 comments about it lol

I really like this concept of a non unified resistance, it allows for more complex stories and backgrounds to be developed, and one could even argue that it's more reallistic; if you see into revolutions through out history you'll see that most of them aren't unified, and even when they are there are still internal factions competing for political dominance.
Of course an intergalactic invasion that threatens the whole planet may lead to an unified humanity, or it may not, we'll see when that happenss :)

@@TheRealClaylex well yeah, it's very believable and true to history.
Random fact, the mortar on top of the school can be interacted with, it will show a cool menu which allows you to shoot it but before you can it will detect you and call combine shells on your position.
In my playthrough when i refused my character threw his revolver away and exclaimed " i dont shoot my brothers in arms." i think broki only shoots you when you dont pick an option fast enough
Yeah, he even counts from ten as a hint to how long you have to make a choice.

It looks like the mod is heavily inspired by Metro: Exodus. The heavy presence of trains, and the entire map/journal part looks to be nearly exactly like it is in the game. The woman who's with you throughout the whole gane is like your wife in metro too. Which is pretty cool
Agreed, it's like hl2 episode 2 had a baby with metro exodus, two of my favorite games from two of my favorite series.
I honestly believe that this post-Alyx era is some sort of golden age (or second golden age) of Half-Life mods. We've gotten so many high quality and highly rated mods in the past few years, and even if there are mods that aren't of the greatest quality, the passion is still there, and the number of mods being made is high for a 20 year old game.
Definitely gonna be playing this soon; forget the Steam Sale, this has caught my attention for the time.

Half Life 2 mods had a great track record for a while.
as someone who is from kz, they did a lot of research and actually depicted the region very well. the only nitpicks I have is the fact that level design, acting, and puzzles are lacking sometimes, and as an anarchist myself I feel like juxtaposing communist rebels against anarchists as if they are polar opposites was kind of odd because you can be an anarchist and believe in leftist values. it's not mutually exclusive.
that being said this mod is a breakthrough to me and I liked it, even though I have mixed feelings about it. you don't get to see good representation like that often. it stands very good on its own as a free mod
There are 2 pcv chargers before the helicopter fight. You also missed an AK rifle hidden in a safe, in the nexus, under stairs.
swelter was pretty much the first mod i was around for the release of. and i really enjoyed it.

i hope swelter creates a trend of looking deeper into how the resistance is organized. it's not hard to believe that the lambda movement is really only a loose confederation of rebel organizations
I hope they also explore the wasteland around the cities especially following long roads and freeway andhighways leaving the cities steering on for miles with abandoned cars, and military and police check points thruout the wasteland.

In my first playthrough I actually sided with Roki despite the clear goal of lambda to unify the anarchists to liberate earth, actually if you refuse to shoot roki and don't wait it out you survive saying that you refuse to shoot a brother in arms and the ending is pretty much the same as the one where you let roki kill you.I thought Roki's goal wasn't all that terrible it's valid considering they've been able to reproduce outside the cities. I like when mods expand on the half life universe it's an unique mod to say the least and i really hope we get more from these guys.
Honestly... I really do not like Swelter: Main reason is that it breaks so many lore details that I think of in the Half-life universe as I treat the main games first followed by mods I like and this breaks the idea of canon in the main games from the less up front aspects such as the combine being an interdimensional empire thus the cities aren't the only reason why humanity can't reproduce because they likely have a field around the whole earth and everything is interconnected so City 17 allowed a hole to be poked in that field for the time being before a second invasion could be pushed... Simply to say... WHY IS THERE A FUCKING BABY IN THIS MOD. Also the only sections worth playing are in City 545 (A number way to high to make full sense in the HL universe given the SHW killed most of humanity), and the Grenade Launcher Hunter-Chopper fight (The again I had god mode on at that point because fuck infinite Ant Lions), everything else is kinda a slog and not really fun. Also Academic is really the only character in this mod who has a character beyond a one off appearance that I honestly kinda like.Also it has the implication that PCV is what was built off of for the Combine Soldier and Overwatch armor which honestly makes little sense to me, like I understand if a Synth based on Earth creatures was made as the Combine harvests resources but harvesting tech from a world that they were able to beat in seven hours just doesn't make much sense IMO. On top of that, the balancing is a nightmare at times, similar to Vortigaunts from EZ2 but... yeah. And since I am at that point in the Video, the idea that the Combine aren't trying to round up the people in the Steppe is also so stupid tbh as the Combine are trying to stomp out independence not let them survive on their own in a desert, if that was the case, Lost Coast and High Way 17 may have been different.
Basically how I see this mod is its like Entropy Zero 2 but with less charm as it uses puzzles that are not well explained along side the plenty of errors that you can see by just paying attention in Half-life 2 and its episodes. I hate it, and I hate how this mod makes me start to think I was too harsh on Entropy Zero 2 until I remember the Aperture aspects that don't line up with Portal in idea at all.
I see where you're coming from. I think them expanding the lore and changing it a bit is still lore friendly enough to be justfied for a mod that is planning to tell its own story. By that I mean that most people could probably play this and not see a big issue with it. Going as far as to expand it to "City 545" is maybe a little much, but I like that it expands the world by such a huge amount. In my head I kinda try to see all Half-Life mods as taking place in the main universe of Half-Life, and them expanding this head-canon universe so much is a fun concept for me. I'm sure that as you said there are a lot of things that don't make sense in the canon as whole, but I'm alright with it personally. But ye obviously what you said is very much a justified opinion to hold as well.

i got 0 performance issues on a 8 year old gaming laptop with horrible performance and a fried cpu, and i play all hl2 games on 90-100 fov with max settings so! I feel like the ending is just like i think its bf3s campaign. Really cool.
In the drone fight you had to shoot a little higher because the gun was shooting lower as the reticle was showing because of its location. If I let myself die or I dropped the gun I got the same ending.
there is an ending you missed where you refuse to kill him and the protaganist goes " I don't shoot my brothers in arms" an you don't get killed
While I love Swelter (7/10) I think it does have pretty noticable issues honestly.
- Enemy variety is worse than HL2s, with many enemies not seen (No dropships, no antlion guards or workers, no barnacles, no hunters), and only 1 new one (Bullsquid), is used in one section of the mod (canals), and there is only 10 of them or so.
- Pacing of getting weapons is weird. You obtain 6 weapons in the first hour or so, which is too fast and not that good.
- Voice acting is fine, but the protag, Roki and Academic are NOT GOOD which is bad, considering they are story pivotal.
- Anarchists make no sense, they blame the Lambda for all the bad things, and act like sitting in the Steppes wont make Combine come for them. Which they do, ex. The Hunter Chopper attack. Even in HL2 and Episode 2, its shown how being away and passive, wont stop the Combine from attacking you.
- Lore contradictions like children being able to be born before the suppression field is out. As people outside of Cities didnt have them either.
I still like it though
What he doesn't mention about the driving part if that you have to stop every 5 minutes to open a gate while being hounded by antlions. Also you can refuse an throw away your weapon at the end an Roki will do the same so you both live
I dont know if it was just me, but i was able to refuse to shoot Roki and he said something along the lines of "I don't shoot my brothers" and put away his gun

What i liked mostly about this review is that completely correct understanding of the plot
Is it just me or the subtitles are obnoxious. I want to see the game but my eye keep looking at them because they are big and there is an animation, it's very distracting
I have good news. I just finished my first playthrough today and the final two segments on the plane weren't too bad for me. I beat both of them on my first try. I checked the previous update notes and the devs have done some balancing since the mod's release, so I bet those parts were balanced as well.
What's annoying about this mod is the bugs. During my playthrough, I've encountered 2 major bugs. One isn't really that big but still annoying, the other however.. broke the game. It's a bug where the NPCs just froze.
In order for me to get the 2nd ending, I just press mouse3 aka the scroll wheel. Then both the player and Roki survive
My only complaints about this mod are:
A lot of the features introduced and used once. The magnet gun gets little attention in this mod.
2. a few of the weapons are completely missable. I never got to obtain the MP5 and only got the AK when I loaded a previous save and found it. The syringes also dont show up much.
3. Some of the combat sequences were really trivial to finish, such as the hunter chopper that they gave missiles to (I only managed to beat it by cheesing it with the grenade launcher.) and the final boss. I also ran into a lot of problems in the level with the old tunnel system because Roki kept getting stuck on the train.
But other than that, the mod was pretty good.
I also liked the part in the canals with the bullsquid, if you jump onto the barge you can find a vortigaunt in a tent smoking hookah and you can smoke with him.
I don't think choosing the endings is based on how much you value your protagonist's life, especially with the third ending you missed, as in that ending, you also live. It's about ideology, really. And if you pay close attention to the ending dialogue, if you choose not to kill Roki, you'll find out that the combine remain, albeit weakened, while in the Lambda Resistance ending, the combine fall entirely.
Combine fall in both endings. Swelter does not change canonical storyline.
- If Roki dies and C545 falls under Lambda command, they free Kazakhstan of the CMB about the same time as C17.
- If Roki lives, the anarchists use the data retrieved from Nexus to avoid CMB raids, and live peaceful lives till C17 uprising, then free Kazakhstan of weakened CMB themselves.
@@ololoololo6631 Not quite, No. The endings on wether or Not you kill roki do Show slightly different Happenings, as If you let Roki live, the local Combine forces are severely weakened, but Not yet defeated, because that's Not what Roki or His men are interested in.

by the way you can also throw the gun if you press the alt fire (which is mouse 3) which you would get the same ending as before but you get the achievement for that ending
The mod is great but a recent patch has completely softlocked me in two instances for me ruining the flow and having me to revert to a previous build or having to activate noclip to finish the game. Other then that another great half life mod. We have been blessed with pretty good hl2 mods for the past few years.
When you do nothing Roki shoots you, if you chose to drop your gun you both survive and help him with the Resistance)
I geniuly like when modders take uncommon or rare settings from the original game. I always appreciate to see how the rest of the world is doing

BTW the plane at the end of the mod is I think an Antonov-12 (AN-12) which is the AN-225's younger brother(both are Ukrainian cargo planes)
In the drone section you could have uaed WASD to move around and have an easier time shooting at the drones.
The last thing I wound up finding upon replaying some levels was the hidden vortigaunt yurt on one of the beached ships and as far as I'm concerned that's the canon ending.

I love driving thru the abandon road of the wasteland steppes especially past abandoned cars, military and police check points from before to and after the 7 hour war, i really wish they made driving on the main road from city 545 longer so I could drive thru more of the wasteland.

Wait, You need to Shoot the Plug!? I did it By Running Before the Times out. You can do that Too, Its Good seeing a Puzzle that can be solved in Many Different ways, Or just entirely Skip it.
This is the best HL2 Mod I've ever played. I highly reccomend playing it, don't spoil the story. Just go download it and play it.

There's some lazy game design, mainly those dumb ass grafittis and arrows that make no sense story-wise, they're literally everywhere, Valve would never
Voice acting is Lacking.
Two HUGE and very common bugs that prevent you from advancing
And I personally felt a bit frustrated at that part in which you gotta activate a thumper, but that was entirely my fault tbh.
But that's really the only negatives about this mod, everything else is great
14:02 is the part where I believe Roki is a god.
I'm not a fan of a lot of the gunplay, and I feel like the visuals could be better, but the art direction is still pretty good and there's plenty of immersive level design.

Snowdrop escape had some secrets that suggested that radiohim had bases in central asia so this mod could tie up into that

Combine getting to deal with what the Russians and US have dealt with for years.
I actually liked the helicopter boss fight (the music definitely helped) although it's true it could have used more cover and health packs. also any puzzle involving rerouting those power boxes I pretty much always ended up solving with brute force

While it isn't technically Half Life Lore friendly, it looks like a neat mod.

this mod is so beautiful, but some of the levels and mechanics kind of ruin some parts of the mod

Honestly, I agree with the Lambda operatives that the Combine Occupation isn't really something people can just "Sit out" and only focus on local issues with. There are small communes that haven't been attacked by the Combine, But I'm willing to bet that's only because they are dealing with both Lambda in the city and Roki's forces in the steppes. Plus, "Local Goals" (as vague as that is) can only go so far to helping people, Hence the word "Local", And in truth seems to be very... lacking to say the least.
Yes, They (supposedly) help the settlements out in the waste and they attacked the Combine Nexus in the area, but in terms of the Nexus, the attack later cost them a cargo plane (Which was probably worth a metric ton of resources) and a UAV. Both of these could have been used to much better effect in supporting Lambda in the City and possibly liberating it more of it, bringing a glut of additional resources to deny from the Combine and make the Combine's position in the region even weaker.
And about that plane, their plan was to have body doubles in the wreckage for the Combine to find and then... what? Is that supposed to make them NOT immediately hammer down on the now biggest threat in the region now that their "inspiring leader" is dead? The goal is to fake their deaths to get off the wanted list but what does that actually do to not make the Combine retaliate? The plan seems half-baked at best, and that's assuming that the Combine don't immediately realize that Roki is still alive after the next big plan.
If their goal was to make Roki seem like a smart and cunning champion of the people who knew what was best, that goal was completely lost on me. Roki seems more like a naïve idealist who managed to form a cult of personality but has no actual foresight to make a meaningful strategy. Sure he *seems* good at fighting, as he tried to prove in the raid on the Nexus, except that he left everything to the player and made no real excuse for it.
What we see of Roki is as follows:
1) He argues with a guy tied to a chair, pushes him over when his "charm" doesn't win the guy over, and gives him a concussion in the process.
2) He sits in his base doing probably f--k all while YOU go out there and shoot down a chopper with a f--king grenade launcher.
3) Before you enter the tunnels, He has YOU "figure out an alternate solution" to the lack of power. I assume it's to "Test you" or some dumb reason. By the way, why did he take the fresh recruit to attack the Nexus instead of anyone else?
4) During the Nexus Raid, leave 90% of the task you find with him to YOU while he just opens a ladder exit.
5) Comes up with the dumbf--k plan to fake your deaths while wasting what was probably a game changer of a resource.
This will rapidly turn into a comment about how much I disliked Roki/His plan and why I was happy to shoot him... Suffice to say, Roki and his Black Battalion is a strategic non-factor for the Resistance at best and an outright hinderance to it at worst.
I think it's intresting they let the player decide what to do, I killed him. :)
I suspect Roki is made to be this "naive leader" by design, it's an intresting though experiment on what you do, who you follow.

the script not written by native english speakers might be a good thing. considering the game takes place in central asia, there are no native english speakers there.
that's true, in reality it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that they even speak english in the first place, unless there is a canon explanation for it

Swelter is a great example of a glow up.
Snowdrop Escape had too many puzzles, too little combat, dissapointing story, very dissapointing final chapter, bad voice acting etc.
And Swelter fixed ALL of them(well, VA still amateurish but it's miles better than SDE)
Seriously it's wild how much they actually improved, especially big thanks for drastic reduction in puzzles and most puzzles being easier to understand 😅
Only downside is that I think gameplay and story could get a wee bit of fine tuning, especially VA but still it's an A tier game compared to C tier SDE 😅
