Why are you not mentioning the possibility that since this mod was released back in 2001 long before HL2 was even announced, people don't know anything about what happened after HL1 yet so the dev are making up their own interpretation of BM aftermath and for the follow up mod since it going to be a hassle to retcon the mod with HL2 story, they just gonna stick with their original story ignoring the canon lore

And if you consider Gearbox expansions canon(which I personally do) there is a chapter in Opposing Force called "Worlds Collide".
Yeah, Xen is a borderworld. You're correct. It's a space between dimensions that you have to traverse through to teleport or get around. Half-Life 2's teleportation uses dark energy or something to basically slingshot past Xen and straight to a destination.

May I ask in what country? I got it in Germany from a Gamestar CD. But I always thought that this was because the developer was German. Didn't know that magazines in other countries included it also on their cds.
yay, the "lore discussion" bit is back! i saw that in one of the first videos i discovered this channel through, and was kinda sad it wasn't really used in any others.
I remember when i got this mod on a Gamestar CD back in ~2002 and still today it's my favourite mod. I only miss some of the original sound datas, that have been replaced, like one hiphop track, it fitted so well into nation city, but i understand that this was done for copyright reasons.
This mod and is sequel are very neat gems in my eyes. If they ever make a sequel based in the source engine or a remake, I do wonder if it'll try sticking with HL2 lore. Also, to clarify on some things. I don't think that the green alien weapon is a mutated rat, it's called the "xs" in the files which I think stands for Xen Shooter. It seems to be a creature from xen that kind of resembles a spore launcher in it's similarity and appeared in the training course for Poke646. Also, I think the same creator of Poke646 made a Max Payne styled mod for HL1 called just "Black Ops" which is one of the very few mods you play as a black ops, so if you do consider it then I think reviewing it would be cool. Also the sounds for the Xen Shooter came from Gunman Chronicles, I don't think you've reviewed it but if you do I'd highly consider it. Lots of cool features are in it

They were placed there by a security guard of the facility, when he found out about the plan to nuke the city and wanted to stop it. You can find his messages to his friend and his wife, where he talks about it.
The mod's art style does indeed resemble more of Counter-Strike Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes in its levels architecture, the custom textures and lighting. P.S. And the city level kinda reminded me of Deus Ex.

Hey Lucia, could you please check out Heart of Evil? its a HL1 mod that i played back in the day, inspired by apocalypse now. I recommend playing the OG version over the Napalm Edition since that's what i played but idk if its broken nowadays or not. It's a flawed mod but it's also full of charm!
I would play all the single player Half-Life mods as they were released. Never been into multiplayer. I'd either download with dial-up or get from magazine cover discs. I thought Poke 646 was stunning. My fave HL single player mod by far.

i went to play this because i thought itd be cool the graphics are great, the guns looks great, everything is great EXCEPT THE GAMEPLAY i swear to fucking god, whoever made this decided to be the most anti-puzzle person ever the part with the subway, my first thought was to go to it, its locked? ill shoot it, doesnt work? well i see a bright powerbox, ill shoot it, doesnt work? well i give up how was i supposed to know that i had to go onto the streetlight that fell over? there was nothing telling me that i had to do that, then i have to go into an apartment through a window, but its not the right apartment, so i go into the one thats closer to the streetlight to find out that the attic door that i was JUST fiddling around has to be fiddled again to be opened, and i get the key, open the apartment, and go through the vent now, whats wrong with it? multiple reasons 1. the game was making me think of going to the subway first 2. there was nothing to imply i had to go onto the streetlight 3. seeing a pipe and a wire blocking my way makes you think "oh, i either have to turn off the power or the water!" but theres nothing, you just go through a vent around it 4. the powerbox when turned on BLOWS UP the locked fence with NO FUCKING REASON this is absolutely not a masterpiece, i legit do not get how people love this, it fucking sucks horribly.
Well, while it probably isn't what they meant, flying through a portal SHOULD technically be entirely possible... Y'know, portal storm and all. The ascribing of no ill-intent to Xen though would basically just be going native, because it's somewhat hinted that the Nihilanth (the being who converted all of the vortigaunts into unpaid interns) was planning for this for a while, along with both some aspect of at least the US government and G-Man... Possibly at the same time, as G-Man does seem to have a pretty well-connected network of fellows.
it makes me really mad that the double-barrel shotgun holds eight shells, is reloaded by shoving shells into the bottom of it, and is pumped. Like how do you mess up a double-barrel shotgun that bad?
Why I include *Poke646* in my canon: (SPOILERS) Officially it's the retconned that the portals in HL1 were happening all over (even though the whole retreat and nuking implies it was Black Mesa centralized) and that the portals didn't close when the Nihilanth was killed, and that doesn't sit well with me. That and just how uninteresting it is to have no time between the Black Mesa Incident and the 7 hour war just makes the official answer extremely less compelling to me than it being after Poke646 on top of the whole "Days" thing being one word in an email from poking Laidlaw in 2020 well after he said "Please don't expect consistent 'canon'-confirming answers from me on these subjects. I don't have old notes to consult. At this point fans have devoted years to analyzing things we threw in the game with close to zero thought other than 'that looks cool.'" Whereas with *Poke646* you get an invasion they *don't* close the Portal because the plan was literally just to blow up Xen to stop more from coming and Reeves stops that, and it doesn't seem like the government ever knew about the portal closing satellite that was sent up in Half-Life 1 probably because *they nuked the guys who were using it.* I just also find it way more thematically appropriate that the government goes to all this effort to cover up the Resonance Cascade that happened at a secret facility, killing enough of the witnesses to scare the rest into hiding and form a new organization with people who do not know what the old researchers did... and then the next portal storm happens publically in the middle of a blinkin' city and it's probably all their fault from trying to cover up the incident in the first place. It really appropriately continues the whole espionage plotline with a focus on the futility of it all in a way that Half-Life immediately drops officially, and I can't say I buy that the Combine invasion retcon was anymore planned to happen soon after HL1 than it was planned to happen after *Poke646.* Oh as for *Vendetta* it honestly doesn't feel like it fits at all as a second half, taking Damien Reeves, the most boned man on earth (not sexual), and then making him out to be a genius and a hero as who's here to get revenge with all the politics being mushed into "kill bad guys, get promoted." Heck he goes straight back to killing the Aliens with no regret or thought in the world. I do think it's worth playing though even if you don't like that story because it does fit in one way: Vendetta really feels like a blissful dream Damien had his first night trapped in Xen, revealing that despite his revelation that the aliens weren't invading, still wishes he could go back to killing them all on sight, get revenge, and be recognized and promoted for it! If *Poke646* reveals what the world was like after the Black Mesa Incident and how Xen life spread throughout earth, *Poke646 Vendetta* reveals exactly what kind of man that game's protagonist really was.
i always thought Xen was the dimension you go to to get to other dimensions - after all, it's called the "borderworld". Just kinda made sense to me. and the ship would've gotten there by having a dimensional teleporter built into it or what have you.

how was i supposed to know that i had to go onto the streetlight that fell over? there was nothing telling me that i had to do that, then i have to go into an apartment through a window, but its not the right apartment, so i go into the one thats closer to the streetlight to find out that the attic door that i was JUST fiddling around has to be fiddled again to be opened, and i get the key, open the apartment, and go through the vent
now, whats wrong with it? multiple reasons
1. the game was making me think of going to the subway first
2. there was nothing to imply i had to go onto the streetlight
3. seeing a pipe and a wire blocking my way makes you think "oh, i either have to turn off the power or the water!" but theres nothing, you just go through a vent around it
4. the powerbox when turned on BLOWS UP the locked fence with NO FUCKING REASON

Well, while it probably isn't what they meant, flying through a portal SHOULD technically be entirely possible... Y'know, portal storm and all. The ascribing of no ill-intent to Xen though would basically just be going native, because it's somewhat hinted that the Nihilanth (the being who converted all of the vortigaunts into unpaid interns) was planning for this for a while, along with both some aspect of at least the US government and G-Man... Possibly at the same time, as G-Man does seem to have a pretty well-connected network of fellows.

it makes me really mad that the double-barrel shotgun holds eight shells, is reloaded by shoving shells into the bottom of it, and is pumped. Like how do you mess up a double-barrel shotgun that bad?

Why I include *Poke646* in my canon: (SPOILERS)
Officially it's the retconned that the portals in HL1 were happening all over (even though the whole retreat and nuking implies it was Black Mesa centralized) and that the portals didn't close when the Nihilanth was killed, and that doesn't sit well with me. That and just how uninteresting it is to have no time between the Black Mesa Incident and the 7 hour war just makes the official answer extremely less compelling to me than it being after Poke646 on top of the whole "Days" thing being one word in an email from poking Laidlaw in 2020 well after he said "Please don't expect consistent 'canon'-confirming answers from me on these subjects. I don't have old notes to consult. At this point fans have devoted years to analyzing things we threw in the game with close to zero thought other than 'that looks cool.'"
Whereas with *Poke646* you get an invasion they *don't* close the Portal because the plan was literally just to blow up Xen to stop more from coming and Reeves stops that, and it doesn't seem like the government ever knew about the portal closing satellite that was sent up in Half-Life 1 probably because *they nuked the guys who were using it.*
I just also find it way more thematically appropriate that the government goes to all this effort to cover up the Resonance Cascade that happened at a secret facility, killing enough of the witnesses to scare the rest into hiding and form a new organization with people who do not know what the old researchers did... and then the next portal storm happens publically in the middle of a blinkin' city and it's probably all their fault from trying to cover up the incident in the first place.
It really appropriately continues the whole espionage plotline with a focus on the futility of it all in a way that Half-Life immediately drops officially, and I can't say I buy that the Combine invasion retcon was anymore planned to happen soon after HL1 than it was planned to happen after *Poke646.*
Oh as for *Vendetta* it honestly doesn't feel like it fits at all as a second half, taking Damien Reeves, the most boned man on earth (not sexual), and then making him out to be a genius and a hero as who's here to get revenge with all the politics being mushed into "kill bad guys, get promoted." Heck he goes straight back to killing the Aliens with no regret or thought in the world.
I do think it's worth playing though even if you don't like that story because it does fit in one way: Vendetta really feels like a blissful dream Damien had his first night trapped in Xen, revealing that despite his revelation that the aliens weren't invading, still wishes he could go back to killing them all on sight, get revenge, and be recognized and promoted for it! If *Poke646* reveals what the world was like after the Black Mesa Incident and how Xen life spread throughout earth, *Poke646 Vendetta* reveals exactly what kind of man that game's protagonist really was.

i always thought Xen was the dimension you go to to get to other dimensions - after all, it's called the "borderworld". Just kinda made sense to me.
