It just so happens I was Bobby's guitarist for those years and I can tell you I've never worked with a finer performer than Bobby Darin before or since. This clip is from "The Bobby Darin Amusement Company", a Summer replacement show that aired on NBC (you can see me in many other clips from the show). This incredible performance was the closing number of the show and at the time Bobby was very ill. He died from heart complications in 1973. He was the best of the best.

What a gorgeous tribute post, but very sad also. You would have absolutely no clue looking at Mr Darin here, that he was so unwell :( May he rest in peace knowing that we still adore his voice/music. Thank you for sharing your special memories with us ❤

Yeah, a Master's Class all right! If you would be a nightclub performer, here's the task: break down every move and gesture he makes here, every breath he takes, every word he sings or ad-libs. In this short performance, he manages to cram in just about every move and trick in show business. and he does it so masterfully that it doesn't look contrived. Like a parody of a night-club singer- except done so skillfully he takes us in. He holds his performance right the line where it would become overblown, a satire, if he blew one more breath into it. And he knows when to quit inflating it. He was one of the all-time greats of Showbiz, Classy Division.

Just pay attention to how many notes he goes between, roughly. Stays in the same vocal register all the time, slowly strolling across the stage every now and then. Singers of today should learn from this. There's absolutely no need to over-do a performance in order to deliver top-notch. A singer like Bobby Darin could pull it off using nothing but a solid voice, confidence and a coolness that just can't be replicated. A true performance, if there ever was such a thing.

Lizard That’s a great grandma there! Although I was born in 69, my parents were big into music of all genres and I passed that on to my sons (29 and 20 now). We like to say we cover everything from ABBA to ZZ TOP because we do. Road trips used to mean playing Name that Tune and it would just blow my husband away that the boys were picking out songs from the 50s and 60s while he couldn’t tell any of them and he was born in 54! Lol. He still sucks at it but he’s getting better... lol

Darin was a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer with an extraordinary vocal range, brilliant entertainer, comic and dramatic actor, he danced divinely with a great sense of rhythm, gifted with brilliant intelligence in fact he was a member of Mensa, a very good chess player ... compare Sinatra to Darin is like wanting to compare lead with gold ...

Owen Shelton I know what you mean! My aunt loved him so much that when we heard he'd passed, she fainted! On another "Mack" video, I wrote that I love this song and said it was one of his best songs. Some guy came back saying, "He didn't *write* it. Others sing it better. It's in no way, shape or form, *his!* I couldn't believe it! It *was* written for "Threepenny Opera" (a German opera) by Kurt Weill in 1928, but it *was* Bobby's video and, I think, *his song!* Who does it better? Some people just live to pick nits, y'know? LOL!

Lady Suzette We all love the first version of a song better than the original. I am glad you like it. I do love this man's style and the pure effortless cool he exudes, but this is not one of his best simply because his version takes the song away from it's roots. If you know Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's "Hurt", it reminds me of that. Cash did great, it is a beautiful song, but his tone is so far from the original, I always have the Trent Reznor version singing behind him.
Give me "Beyond the sea" or "Dream lover" any day, those are Darin's all the way down. The smoothness of Darin cuts against the gritty horror that Mack needs, as if Freddy Kruger was played by a Brad Pitt.
