Duane and his brother Greg had a band which was signed by management and moved to the west coast. after being there for a peiod of time and only played live once or twice Duane decided to move back east. He settled at Muscle Shoals pitching his tent in the parking lot waiting for a chance to play. At this time in history if the white musicians went out to lunch with colored musician they received menecing looks. But one thing the could not stand were long haired hippies. So duan and Wilson stayed in the studio where Duane some how talked Wilson into covering Hey Jude. Duanes guitar fills for many people represent the birth of southern rock.
Eric Clapton heard Hey Jude and declared Duanes solo/guitar work the best he ever heard. Later when The Allman brothers were playing on the west coast Clapton aske his producer if he could ge tickets for the show. He did and introduced everyone and they went back to Claptons studio where the partied and played all night. During that session Duane recorded the slide solo for Layla'

Eric Clapton was impressed with the guitatar licks and went to find the musician he hooked up with Duane and invited him to the studio Duane ended up playing the slide solo for Laya.. you can find Tom Towd the producer for Layla and he takes you on a ride showing the parts of the solo as he produced them
Man, this is how you do a cover ... you make it your own. Is it better than the original? I don't know, the Beatles version is really iconic, and I have heard it a million times. I use this version as the gold standard for comparisons of covers of Hey Jude. To be fair, this is the first time I have heard the Pickett/Allman version and it hits me in all the right places; but better? I don't know, let me listen to it a few more times.
I love the mix for the Pickett/Alman version, it's certainly a child of its time, but that doesn't make it any less effective, like when the horns came into my right ear ... I almost looked to my right to see where that smooth, rich sound was coming from. It was gorgeous.

I like it, but to me it’s not one of those covers where the artist claims it as his own …like Watchtower by Hendrix, or Hurt by Johnny Cash…or even Sound of Silence by Disturbed. Perhaps it’s just that this song is SO associated with McCartney in my mind with his voice…and the feelings it evoked. This is totally another vibe, which is good music but doesn’t have the same depth of feeling to me ears.
Helene, I agree. The Beatles version is my reference point for this song, I have heard it so often that I find it hard to accept it in other forms, as glorious as the Pickett/Allman version was. Maybe after a few more listens I will have my ear in tune better and have a better feel for the song. However, I still think it was fantastic.

I haven’t listen to Hey Jude for at least a decade although I love the song. I do not compare it to the original. I absolulely loved the voice and the instrumentation on this.

I think the people of that era were too damn stoned to know any different, and that is how the Beatles became famous.Not at all a fan!!! Way too overrated. There were so many more extraordinary performers at that time! But, thank you for this, it made my day, my week!! 11 out of 10!!
Very cool. Really enjoyed it instrumentally and the insane vocals, but it didn't have the heart of the original for me, not the same feels. It was amazing, just in a very different way. ❤

I’ve loved Duane Allman’s slide guitar genius since I first bought Anthology in the 70s. Layla was superlative but please please Thamesmen…listen to Please Be With Me (from that album). It annihilates Eric Clapton’s version. It is sublime.
