What set of tracks. An emotional rollar coaster that i wanted to get off at one point but I stuck through. Joni is always moving. But I want to dive into The Band now... these guys seems too damn cool. And then Van just sends us home with a song in our hearts. Great video... thank you both.

We were in a musical renaissance back then. Those are rare and glorious. So lucky to be born at a good time.
"This movie should be played loud" is a very true statement from the opening credits, the Band were among the best. All multi instrumentalists, 3 great singers and Robbie the genius songwriter, who provided most of their material. From this concert "It makes no difference" and "The Weight" are absolute highlights and all the guest performances too.
"The Last Waltz" is a stone classic Rock and Roll documentary. So many classic performances. The Band is a top notch group, with so many classic songs. They are well worth a serious dive. Muddy Waters alone is worth the price of admission.
The performances in this movie have become immortal to so many. May that never be lost. Rock on everyone.

Just wait til you hear Rick Danko on lead vocals....he has a raw, powerful, genuine emotion that comes through, and hits right in the feels.
Try, "It Makes No Difference", "Stage Fright", or "Chest Fever" to hear him showcased...
His performance on “It Makes No Difference “ is superb. One of my favorite live performances ever.
I highly recommend “It Makes No Difference “, from this concert. Rick Danko’s vocal performance is heart wrenching.
Pity that Richard Manuel was not his best during this period.

Robbie was one of a kind, great song writer, guitar player, and so smooth, good looking and charisma.
Garth Hudson’s keyboards on Coyote are sublime. Only one of the Band left with us.

Van Morrison is a sax player and I’ve always thought that his unique vocal phrasings are based on how he would play it, on saxophone.
Lee - every song on this is worth watching. It is a time capsule of rock and roll.
That is a very cool insight about Van, the way he phrases and projects his voice is like a sax! Damn...
His voice is like Miles Davis’ trumpet on “Beside You” from ‘Astral Weeks’.

Joni and Van are godly in that film, nothing like them. Joni is pure genius.
The musicianship and sublime quality of the artists was of the highest grade possible ! Don't forget The Band had literally a few weeks to learn and practice The Last Waltz concert with their guest artists ? The end product tells us volumes at their brilliance and incomparable musicality as a group ,in achieving this feat ! THE BAND , The Last Waltz ...the last of the all time greats !
Robbie was quite nervous and exhausted. Barney Hoskyns wrote in his biography of The Band, if 16 years on the road didn't kill him, The Last Waltz might finish the job. Rock Brynner (son of actore Yuel Brynner) was a manager for them, or some kind of help, he would point out all the things that could go wrong. Robbie had to send him away, he couldn't allow any negativity to enter his mind. I thing at the end Robbie said something like this "The gods were on out side that night".

Actually Robbie, was born and grew up in Toronto. There's a video autobiography of The Band available here on Utube. The narrator describes Robbie as a "street smart Toronto kid", or perhaps just "street smart". Robbie was 16 when he joined Ronnie Hawkins, he quit high school. He had been hanging around Ronnie and his band, and he wrote 2 songs for Ronnie when he was 15.
It doesn’t have to change. I’m 74 and graduated from HS in ‘67. I am still friends with most of my good friends from back in the day - late ‘60’s, ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. I had lunch with a good friend from my protest days. Those were my best and happiest years. I cherish them.

The Band started in Toronto in the very early 60's as back up to Romping Ronnie Hawkins. He mentored them well but mostly stayed behind and we often saw him in the 70's Toronto bar scene doing his rockabilly and generally having a very good time.
The Weight and It Makes No Difference for sure
No bad perfomances in the last waltz. Neil Young doing Helpless is a highlight for me. When they were sharing a house, Dylan used to say "where's the band?" or "Get the Band down here". Dylan never wanted to play a song the same way twice; the Band were able to hang with him. You're gonna end up watching the whole movie fwiw.

Further On Up The Road with Eric Clapton put the audience on their feet screaming. It's killer.
"They had three of the best singers in the world in one band, it wasn't fair!" May be paraphrasing slightly there but its true.

@@michaelgray4964 Songwriter, Robbie wrote majority of the songs, although the others did write a few and co wrote some, but Robbie was the main songwriter.
Thank you for playing 3 of my favorite performances from imo the greatest concert film of all time. You not only have these stars, you also have Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Neil Young and ofc, Bob Dylan. You mentioned what a great shot one time - it helps when your director is Martin Scorsese. And they have two tracks with artists that couldn't make the show but performed live with them on a sound stage with no audience. The Weight with the Band and r and b group The Staples is a classic rendition of one of their classic songs. Or just do the whole concert.

As a drummer, you might be interested to know that the drums on Coyote were played by Richard Manuel, you can see him behind Joni on the B&W unedited video of the Last Waltz.
The Band came to fame as Bob Dylan's back up band, after he went electric. They then had a great career on their own. The Last Waltz has so much great things to see and hear
Ronnie Hawkins had a genius for picking and developing talent.The Band started out as The Hawks, his rock and roll band, they left Hawkins changed their name to The Band and picked up a singer named Bob Dylan. Another of his bands left and picked up a singer named Janis Joplin and became known as The Full Tilt Boogie Band. There were others he started or influenced including Crowbar, Bearfoot King Biscuit Boy and Skylark. He found all this talent in the Toronto - Hamilton area at a time when no one else suspected there was anything there.

I last saw Joni Mitchell in person around 1979 or 1980. I'm 80 and have been one of her big fans since seeing her on TV in 1970. It was a PBS show hosted by Steve Allen also featuring Arlo Guthrie among others. I had no way to record the video however I recorded the audio on my Grundig 4 track reel to reel. I hope Joni is continuing to recover. I really miss her music and it's sad to see so many of my favorite musicians/songwriters gone, retired or with serious health issues.
You will love sitting down and watching this masterpiece of a film. It doesn’t include all of the individual performances. I enjoy listening to the interview style conversations with Martin, Scorsese, and all of the band members. It will make you want to learn more about this magical group of guys.
This concert film is right up your alley. Van has severe stage fright, that's why he just left. Lot's of stories about it.

You really have to watch the whole film (directed by Martin Scorcese) and/or listen to the triple album. The film was released 2 years after the concert, do try Muddy Waters singing "Mannish Boy" and right after in comes Eric Clapton doing "Further On Up The Road", a rendition where every one on that stage is just perfect and they know it, too.
There are not many bands that Joni could sit in with that could stay with her this well. Rick Danko on the bass, rock solid underpinning... but then, The Band wasn't just any pick up group she sat in with either. Soooo good.

They’re also Canadian, except for Levon, who’s from Arkansas, and they knew Joni from the old days playing bars in Toronto.

Robbie was the coolest guy in rock and roll, and the best looking, so much charisma. his band mate Rick also very cool, looks and charisma.
You have to check out the Dylan set (3 songs, Forever Young, Baby Le Me Follow You Down & I Shall Be Released)) from the Last Waltz, yes the band was Dylans back up band when went electric.
From the movie, there is a clip of The Band doing 2 songs with Dylan that is just great. One of my favorite songs from the movie is Neil Diamond doing a song of his that wasn't a hit on the radio, but an awesome song, "Dry Your Eyes."
Winterland was a great venue. Check out Robbie Robertson’s “Broken Arrow” -1987 You will go back for more.

Greatest rock and roll film of all time. The Band were one of the most authentic and brilliant bands there ever was - 3 of the best voices going around, and just fantastic song writing.
Back in the day one of my favorite groups. Loved Leon Helm.. No groups like this today. I viewed Bob Seger and the Silver

So many great musicians joined this show to honor the Band - Clapton claimed they were his favorite group, Dylan, Neil Young, and many others. I love Ronnie Hawkins Who Do You Love - the Band started off their careers with Ronnie.

The Band is definitely worth a deep dive. Their first album, Music From Big Pink came out when psychedelic rock was in full motion and it was totally different, labeled Americana. Which is interesting because they're all Canadians except Levon Helm, from Arkansas. Eric Clapton wanted to join their band when he first heard them. They're one of my favorites. Check out: The Weight, Up on Cripple Creek, The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down, Atlantic City, Chest Fever (one of my favorites, amazing organ solo!), Rag Mama Rag, King Harvest (Has Surely Come), Life is a Carnival, I Shall Be Released... So so many great songs!!!
They all can play, they can all sing, they're THE band...
The band was the band that all the other bands listened to, that's why the last waltz involved so many other artists......great musicians making great music
Looks like it got taken down, but there used to be b/w house video of the entire show. It ran about 4 hours. Now it's chopped up into 40 pieces or so. Hells Angels reciting poetry and other stuff during the breaks.
They severed Thanksgiving Dinner to everyone as well. RIP Bill Graham, thanks for all the concerts.
Probably the most covered song of The Band is "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". How a Canadian captured the the despair of the post war south is still amazing to me. I know Levon made suggestions, but this was Robbie's song all the way

I was there I was 20 years old and I had all their records. I have a songbook of the Band album signed by them. I wish I could get a complete recording because the movie cuts half the songs

IMHO, "The Last Waltz" by The Band is one of the three best concert films of all-time. I'd put The Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" right there as well as "Jazz on a Summer's Day" about the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival.
The Band's first album Music from Bog Pink, and their 2nd album The Band are both great. The 2nd one seems to take you back in time, the song The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down is classic now. Up on Cripple Creek is great too.
There is great documentary about the Band “Once Were Brothers”

Levon was the coolest guy God ever put breath into, a truly amazing human being. You need to go down the "Van the Man's" catalogue, he has an amazing catalogue of great songs. L33, my Dad once told me:" People you know go around the corner and never come back." That's life, your in a good place,look ahead not behind cause they might be gaining...lol.
The Big Pink is an awesome album by the Band if you haven't started playing any of the cuts from it yet.

Not only a concert movie, but between performances there are interviews and a history of the group, which came together originally as a backup band for Arkansas singer Ronnie Hawkins on the Toronto bar scene. Later, touring as Dylan's backup musicians after going electric, he would just refer to them as "the band". Their first album was a big factor in Eric Clapton being dissatisfied with what he was doing with Cream, and when Clapton played with them at this concert, he went to play, and his guitar strap fell off.
Ah, L33, man, you have to hear "It Makes No Difference" live by The Band.

When they announced this concert upcoming when I was at Winterland once (I spent my youth there) they said a Thanksgiving diner would be provided: ticket price $25 and I said no way, too expensive haha. And strangely I’ve never regretted not going…I’ve seen everyone who played there in other concerts (except Neil Diamond thank you) so it was ok❤
The entire movie is just one icon after another!!! As good as it gets, and doesn't need to ever get any better!!! Just saying!

Its a crime how Morrison isnt rememered today like some of his peers. Even David Bowie covered one of his songs back in the day. (Here Comes the Night) If you go down the rabbit hole, check out Into the Mystic. My favorite by him. Only thing that stops that song from being perfect is its too damned short

Robbie knew Joni Mitchell from his friendship with David Geffen. David invited Robbie and his wife to join him on a tour to Paris.
It Makes No Difference, and The Weight (with the Staples) are the highlights of this concert, most people will agree I think. But, the version of Helpless with Neil Young, the Band and Joni singing harmonies from behind a curtain is just as phenomenal imo.
Every member of the Band Were exceptional musicians and talents it’s such a shame that they have all gone with the exception of Garth he is the only one left now since the passing of Robbie
I actually saw Van Morrison live back in 1970 at the Academy of music on 14th street in New York City. And he was the headliner, followed by Linda Ronstadt when she was still with the Stone ponies and wasn't known yet. And James Taylor's brother. Livingston Taylor, who's in my opinion just about as good as his brother, James. I've also seen Joni live but to my chagrin, I never saw the Band in concert and I just loved the heck out of them. And I love the Band's back story where they were basically discovered by Bob dylan
