Wilson had rejected the song saying he didn't want to do it. During a lunch break, Duane convinced him that he needed to do it then proceeded to show him how he should do it. It was a BIG hit for Wilson. Skydog was a great influence to Wilson on this song.

When Eric Clapton heard this song he was amazed by the guitar at the end of the song and when he found out that it was Duane Allman he asked him to record with him on the Derek and the Dominoes Layla which he did.

The story behind this song is great! It was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, at Fame Studios. The 60's south didn't like Wilson for being "black," and they didn't like Duane even more because he was a white, "long hair hippie." One afternoon, the Swampers, the Fame Studio musicians, all went to lunch, so Duane and Wilson stayed behind. By the time the Swampers came back to the studio, Wilson and Duane had already laid out where they wanted to go with the song, so when the band joined them, it came together as this magical blend of Wilson's and Duane's incredible genius that we know today. When I hear songs like this, I think to myself how blessed the human race is to be able to enjoy such soul-touching music.

@@Kachunk673 Nor did Rick Hall, but you're missing the point I was trying to make. The point is that, in spite of the prejudices of the time, Wilson and Duane cut the song that, as Jimmy Johnson describes it, was the birth of the Southern Rock genre. (Yes, as Gregg put it, that's like saying Rock-Rock, but you get the point) The genius of Duane and Wilson was nothing short of brilliant.

The allman brothers band wasn’t even together yet when Duane told Wilson he should record this song. Duane went to muscle shoals Alabama to the famous recording studio because big time talent was recording there. He pitched a tent out in the parking lot and just hung around. and Duane went in and talked Wilson Pickett into doing this song while all the studio musicians and producers were gone to lunch.

Duane was just 24 years old, and riding his Harley Davidson Sportster, swerved to miss a truck that pulled out in front of him. The bike High sided, flipped him off, laned on top of him causing massive internal injuries. A year later Barry crashed his motorcycle into a bus, rode home, and later passed from a brain bleed. Our phone rang soon after, it was Duane and Gregory's mother Geri calling, and asked to speak to my mother. Lord Not Again! She cried, and I've cried many tears since.

Dickie Betts was on that level, think about he was used to playing across the stage from Duane, then he's gone he had to play all the guitar parts, they picked up Chuck Leavelle , who was a brilliant piano player, and the band went on to great commercial success, true it can't be the same after losing Duane, not to mention Berry Oakley whose bass style was phenomenal, Berry really took Duanes death hard, but they carried on and still made great music, Duane and Dickey were both great just a little different from each other, but so great together, that's what was missing after they lost him

The boys at muscle shoals, Wilson Pickett and Duane Allman hit a home run on this. A taste of gospel, soul and blues all rolled into one. They lay down that groove then in comes Wilson with the vocals and then the horns and organ, Good God! It takes balls of cast iron to try and cover a Beatles song, any Beatles song, cause how do you top perfection?? Especially Hey Jude ,just a few months after it came out and guess what it went right up the charts again ,I believe to #1. Pickett and Sky Dog owned this like it was theirs and in a way, it was!!! I never tire of hearing either version!

This was just one of Duane’s sessions he did. I hope you read his resume. The people he played with were some of the greats. The guy was one hell of a guitarist……… I saw them in the seventies. Multiple times and Duane was the reason most of the time. I played the guitar also and I was absolutely spell bound with his talent. He was killed in a motorcycle accident. Then the bass player in the band, AB, Barry Oakley who was Duane’s best friend died from a motorcycle accident less then a mile from where Duane died almost a year to the day Duane died. They are buried side by side in the cemetery.

Others have said this already, but thought I'd flesh it out a bit. Duane was killed in a motorcycle crash on October 29, 1971 at the age of 24. Just over a year and only three blocks away from Duane's crash site, bassist Berry Oakley was killed in a hauntingly similar motorcycle crash, on November 11, 1972. He was 24, as well.

This recording came about by the suggestion of Duane Allman, Wilson thought Duane was joking when he suggested it. The song went on to enjoy success, peaking at #13 on the Billboard R&B singles chart in 1969 and #23 on the top 200. Wilson Pickett is probably most famous for the cover of Mac Rice's Mustang Sally in 1966, reaching #23 on the pop charts that year. What a voice Wilson Pickett had! This song was recorded at the infamous FAME studios in Muscle Shoals. Thanks for reacting guys. What a gem of a song!

Yes, this was done when Duane was a session musician in Muscle Shoals. Duane talked him into doing this song. Wilson Picket's best-known song was "In the Midnight Hour." Duane didn't sing background on anything at Muscle Shoals that I know of, but he played the fuck out of the guitar for Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs and others. Duane's backup work was what Eric Clapton noticed about him before they worked on Layla.

Absolutely killer Vocals by Wilson, horns, and Duane on guitar, how could you not love it. Eric Clapton heard this song on radio, contacted his manager/producer and informed them he needed to meet the guy playing guitar on Hey Jude with Wilson Picket. He dropped in on an ABB session and invited Duane to play and record with his band on the Derek and the Dominoes recordings of Layla and other assorted Love Songs. The rest is history as they say. EC invited Duane to play and tour with his band, but Duane wanted to create his own brand of music with the ABB. He died several months after recording with Eric Clapton. As the story goes, Duane, disillusioned after recording in CA, with studio execs trying to force a round peg to fit into a square hole, departed and heading down to Muscle Shoals, hoping to get a gig playing guitar. Studio execs there informed Duane that there brand of R&B didn't rely on guitar, but he could pitch a tent and stay on their property. Duane and Wilson Pickett apparently got along very well, and one afternoon when the producer and much the band went to lunch, Duane (long haired hippie types were not looked highly upon down south in those days, so Duane preferred staying in) convinced a reluctant Wilson that Hey Jude could be transformed into an R&B hit, and showed Wilson just how it could be done. Upon returning from lunch, the producer was shocked to find that Duane had taken over the session and arranged this smash hit and other tunes on the album. Duane was a force of nature, but as the proverb goes, "the candle that burns twice as bright, must also burn twice as short". He was like comet in the sky, a shooting star. But his impact is still being felt today 50+ years later, as has been the case with many of the greats.

when you dig deeper you will learn about the teenage white boys of behind The Muscle Shoals Sound. I'm Thankful to have grown up along The Chitlin Circuit of the 1960's era. Back when my brothers would back up the performers at our local venue in Lake City, Fl., before our folks opened The Stable, for The Dark Horsemen band (my brothers, and friends). Duane, Greggory, and The Allman Joys drove up from Daytona Beach to play. We discussed how The Beatles were good, but Mae said they needed more Soul. Duane was the coolest. He made it happen, and So much more.
Thank y'all for your kind thoughts of this ole friend of mine.
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chitlin' Circuit was a collection of performance venues throughout the eastern, southern, and upper Midwest areas of the United States that provided commercial and cultural acceptance for African American musicians, comedians, and other entertainers during the era of racial segregation in the United States through the 1960s.
The Chitlin' Circuit was considered to be by, for, and about black people. There is debate as to when the Chitlin' Circuit peaked. Some say its peak was in the 1930s, some say it was after World War II, and others say it was the time of the blues.

He told Rick to get Duane get a band together ...The Allman Brothers and Southern Rock was born. By the way Mustang Sally and Land of a 1000 dances were big for Wilson Pickett

Oh, sorry - one more thing: The "Remember Duane Allman" isn't a mural. A group of guys carved it into the side of the highway - I can't remember which interstate it was. Again, those letters are hand-carved into Georgia red clay.
And how did Duane die? He was in a motorcycle accident. It's so hard to type about, even all these years later.
At the time, FM wasn't big - AM still ruled the airwaves. FM was more underground.
There was an underground DJ called Father Tree.
He was the way I found out about Skydog's accident.
Father Tree was on the air and broke into a song he was playing and said, "Duane Allman just died." And he walked out and never came back - at least not under the name "Father Tree."

This is the song that got Duane a record deal. Remember, Duane didn’t sing, he didn’t write songs, he didn’t have a band, he played guitar. They heard the solo at the end and signed him.

Duane could sing and he wrote that arrangement, undeniably he wrote the guitar part, I had a cassette of Duane and he sung "Dimples" and Greg did "Sweet Little Angel" .

@@tommyreid2317 yeah, everyone can sing, yet he didn’t sing, he didn’t write songs, and he didn’t have a band. My point is, he got a record deal on his ability to play guitar.

Y’all should watch the documentary Muscle Shoals!! That’s where so many folks did their best work! Including Aretha, Wilson n others.
One of the players in the house band, the Swampers, n later a producer said that ending guitar break was “the birth of Southern Rock”!!
Died in motorcycle accident. I think that picture is from where he died

Gregg said Duane only ever knew 2 speeds, that's how he broke his arm causing him to learn slide guitar, he was going fast and fell off a horse

Muscle Shoals, baby! The funkiest white boys on the planet, the Swampers, at the time! This is the greatest collaboration on a “cover” song, ever! Muscle Shoals was the epitome of inter-racial music making in the 60’s!

Duane wasn’t “brought in” for this. At the time, he was the house guitar player for the studio, he just happened to be the guy on the clock for the session. The result of the session wasn’t just this amazing song, but also it lead to the formation of the Allman Brothers. Otis Redding had recently passed away and his manager, Phil Walden, was looking for his next act. After hearing this single, Walden sought Allman out and signed him to a contract and told him to put a band together. The band Duane put together was what became the Allman Brothers’ Band. The initial idea was that it was supposed to be a power trio in the vein of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but Duane kept adding people until they were at six instead of three.

Duane Allman died in a Motorcycle accident at only 25 years of age. If he had been waring a helmet that night he may have still been with us today. Tragically however that was not the case.

Although he was more of a performer singer, it was probably Pickett who originally nudged me deeper into real soul vibration. Southern rock nudged me but from a slightly different angle. But nowhere better nudges sound so real! While this is nowhere near a famous as Pickett's hit, this reminded me that hits don't mean a thang without a bang and my friends, this one continuously bangs!
