You covered more of the bikes controls and set up of each setting up the bike then the other videos I've seen on the pan American bikes. Thank you for doing this video.
I am not even interested in this bike but I will watch any Laidlaw video. I know some people don’t like his monotone BUT there is no video of his I won’t watch. I like when he brings in the family including his son and when he brings in the other people from the shop
I rode one at a demo event yesterday at the Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park. First time that active suspension lowered with the flip of the ignition, I knew I was on something unique and special. Then, the ride was amazing. The suspension was comfortable and competent. The brakes were next level and the power of that new Revolution Max engine exceeded my expectations. Power for days and a great sound. For a first effort in a field it normally doesn't play in, Harley really knocked it out of the park with this Pan America.
Thank you Matt! I'm a visual learner, and you've done a great job of explaining the functions. Another area of your style, as I'm watching the video is that you take an approach that helps long time Harley riders understand the different aspects of the Pan America Special's tech, like the difference between the cruiser Infotainment system, GPS, and comms. I much prefer the Pan America’s display to my Ultra Classic’s infotainment system. For many reasons. I’d reverse the score you gave to the units. Just different lines of thought and use. I might mount my Garmin Montana 700i. My Pan America Special is being prepped up here at Redwoods H-D and I think we're going to put it in the display so people can come by and see it for a week. Then I'm gonna put a bazillion miles on the bad boy! Thanks again for all you do. Your a big part of why I'm on a 17-Ultra Classic , and a 21-Pan America Special.
Many things to like about this machine. I have a 2018 BMW 1200GS. One thing about the Beemer that I like over the Pan Am is the control on the left handle bar for menu options. On the BMW it is a wheel that you turn and press in for use. Much easier to use and navigate all the menu options. I've only seen it on BMW motorcycles. However, for the first attempt by Harley this is an excellent motorcycle.
I bought a leftover 2023 PAS sport two weeks ago. Really digging the bike, haven't used the Road king since buying the PAS. At this price point a shaft drive and hydraulic clutch would be nice. I got this bike for a daily commute from Queens to Brooklyn. It's been raining for the last 3 days and the bike is performing awesome. Glad I bought it. Thanks for the video, very informative. Ride safe and often.
Great and helpful video. Im contemplating getting a PAS and read so many comments on the bikes issues, though each new year getting better, Glad to see a tutorial on the buttons, etc! Most low mileage used ones all seem to need updates which corrects the issues!
Matt,Thank you for this awesome tutorial. I just purchased a 2021 Special and your review is my go to for info. There have been a few subtle changes because of the updates but it's all simple to adjust to them. Again, great job. Paul
I just bought mine yesterday. Hasn't been delivered yet, but I cant wait to dee the difference between the revolution and the older 88. This video is a great overview. Time to buy a battery tender.
Thanks for Posting…. This is the Best DEMO of the PAN America that I’ve seen that give all the details of the control…. I really would like to have this as a 2nd Bike to my Street Glide…
Congratulations HD outstanding job, welcome officially to the new millennium ! Fantastic bike and only the start of a bright new future for the bar and shield. long live Harley Davidson.
Most comprehensive and informative review out there. I've test rode it and didn't know a fraction of this, thanks so much Matt. I'm signed up for an off road test ride soon here in the Midwest and this will help tremendously.
I can’t wait to ride this bike. I am considering getting this and using it as a daily commuter, that I can also throw the bags on for a long ride or to carry my work stuff! Do you think it is a good fit for California traffic and a commute through the Los Angeles areas?
Great overview! I just picked mine up two days ago (PAS), and absolutely love it. Kudos to HD for boldly going in a new direction, and executing it so well on the first try. With that said, the Nav system is definitely a solid C+, and I wish the windscreen was a little less flimsy. Overall though, wow, what a bike, and it’s a Harley!
Your videos are beyond helpful; I'm getting my '22 Pan America Special hopefully in a week or two and feel grateful to now be ahead of the game. Question, have you heard (just to bypass navigation and cell phone range dependency) of people putting on a Garmin unit somewhere on the dash? Thanks again for great content!
Thank you, Matt, for another great video on this bike. The more I see of it, the more I like it. One word sums it up: Versatility! I don't see anything Harley left out.
You won't be disappointed if you buy one. I'm fairly picky with my bikes and so far I love mine, I just got the base model as I don't need all the features of the Special.
Very good information and detail thank you. I must have watched several dozen videos and nothing showed you the kind of detail that yours did. I wonder if the battery can handle driving through a creek or not. I live in a area where there is a lot of low water Bridges and it's not uncommon to have to drive through a foot of water.
You're the man, thanks for doing the legwork for me. I just bought the 24 CVO Pan America and I love it! I created a Custom A mode which disabled the rider height mode, I'm 6'0 flat can half flat foot the bike 😁. Keep up the great work love your videos, the content is always on point!
Thank you for sharing I recently purchased this very bike 2021 pan america special and it didn't have the Manuel's with the bike this video is extremely helpful and well explained thank you
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. There has got to be an option to run power to the handle bar area to charge phone or 3rd party GPS but pleased they have outlets from the factory for Gerbing heated gear. Just wanted to add about the Ride Planner app from my experience. It is a great way to plan a route before hand using a laptop or pc. Try to make it as simple as possible when planning out using the least amount of waypoints. Keep the file size down to a minimum. Break up a route if necessary into separate files (ex: LA_Sac_1, Sac_Tahoe_2, Tahoe_Vegas_3, Vegas_LA_4) and a large part of that depends on waypoints. It's just something to experiment with before you try on a multiday adventure. If you set a waypoint and don't actually meet it, the app will reroute you based upon the most fastest way to reach your destination. For example, you spend time planning a route through the twisties from LA to San Diego but miss a waypoint you set before the twisties. It will most likely reroute you using the interstates. If you miss a waypoint and it keeps yelling at you to U-turn to go back to it, then you decide to use the "skip waypoint" option, it will most likely reroute you using the interstates or even roads that are pot hole dirt gravel roads that it determines to get you to your destination quicker. I think the Harley Ride App will continue to operate or hold the planned route (or even unplanned route if just viewing the map as you ride) you set even when you run out of cell phone signal service and relies on the GPS function within the phone (totally separate technologies from what "experts" have informed me) The GPS satellites lock onto a "beacon" baked within your phones motherboard and is how it can track the exact location even when you don't have cell service. Matt looks like he forgot to switch the display from Kilometers Per Hour to Miles Per Hour. Need to do a video with people of different heights, like Jamie, mounting the PA, moving it around like in a garage, stopping with one foot on peg, one on the ground for tri-pod effect.
Great job explaining everything. When I took the bike for a ride, no one at the dealership had any product knowledge on this bike. I would think H.D. has has a training class for the sales people with some type of incentive for the sales person with the best presentation.
I think there will be some need for accessories and usb charging near the handlebars. Most adventure riders want their phone on a handlebar mount.....this would be a good add.
Everyone will probably add 1 or 2 more tenders straight to the battery for always hot power? 1 to the bars and 1 to the rear. Plus, it helps to learn how to get to the battery! Some guys also like switched power for accessories.
My GOODNESS you were thorough with this breakdown of features! The more I watch you ride this thing, the more I wonder if I actually AM too old to go this route, haha. Great video- thanks for the awesome content.
You’re not too old. Just pick and choose your terrain carefully so you don’t get Into a ride that’s too technical. Always ride with at least 1 other rider.
Great video. Just picked up my two tone PA special and this video helps a ton. Your Raw Hyde video was a clincher for me to buy mine. You have a gift for videos and wish you all the best
Thanks for the video. My pan america should be in later this week and no one at my dealership had any idea how anything on the bike worked, so this will help tremendously when I start setting it up.
Thanks really appreciate the intro to all of the features of the PAS. Looking to buy another bike for long distance/duration touring, and I’m down to a BMW GS and a HD PAS. The ARH and the more contemporary electronics have me leaning toward the PSA. Appreciate your frank comments about putting it on a battery tender if not ridden daily. My 20 year old BMW has a strong battery charging system, so just something I need to pay attention to. Although in the Midwest, come the first of the year will be riding where it is warmer, and seeing as I’ve spent a lot of time in the Palm Springs Coachella Valley area, it has me considering simply buying the bike in CA. FWIW I’d never even consider it, had I not been introduced to you folks through this video. Thanks again.
Great explanation of things. My dealer needs to watch this video, they didn't know nearly enough about the bike. You nailed the navigation system, it's the weakest point on the bike. I absolutely hate it. I hope HD figures out other options in the future. You solved my switched power problem. I hadn't thought about using the heated clothes plugs. Brilliant suggestion! Thanks! One thing you didn't mention was how you can change the background from black to white by holding down the trip button for 4-5 seconds (that's not even mentioned in the manual).
Thanks for this video! New PA owner- saved me lots of searching. I was disappointed the USB C Port on the dash doesn’t work to charge smartphones while riding.
Excellent instructional video, Matt. I ran a USB-C cable under my tank yesterday when I installed my Extreme-Flow Air Filter. It was an E-Z fix to the issue. I have a couple of RAM ball mounts set up for my phone and GoPro... no complaints. Trivial issue.
. Does this use a Harley app for navigation? I use an Apple phone and my navigation works even if I don't have a signal when I use Apple maps. Good review Thanks
So heated clothing is plugged in under the seat ? What happens when you get off the bike do you have to remove the seat to walk away or am I missing something ? Great video, seriously considering this bike. Thanks Matt.
I also discovered that the entire owners manual is available on the HD App. Could be useful sometime. And also if you want to change the security PIN that you get given with the bike because who needs another code to remember, don't use the touch screen, just use the indicator switch to move the numbers left to select number and right to move to the next. So much easier.
Nice review Matt, One question i currently ride 14-Limited why does Harley design the gas cap door to swing back and not forward.. Door is alway in the way when fueling.. Noticed the same design on this bike also..I can never get a straight answer thought i would ask the expert..
Got my Panam S yesterday. So it's totally new to me. Loved this tuto. Loads of info. 3 things bug me already with the bike : • The nav system goes through the phone, so you need to download the app, make an account and it's probably best to download a map. I went out this morning and coming back it got lost - no map found etc... so you need to download the map. I wish they had just used Apple Carplay instead of their system. I don't like the display on the bike. It's really not detailed. You can't get that TomTom Rider 3D sort of view as if you are on the bike. You're an arrow on a map. If there is a way around this I would like to know but I can't find any choice of view. • First 200yds out of the HD shop and all went black. No screen. Nothing. I restarted and another 500yds blackout again. Back to the shop, they went for a ride and all was fine. I think the keyfob was getting interference from something I was carrying - car or house keyfob maybe. Anyway all was fine today until tonight when the same thing happened. I put the fob in my jeans pocket and all was OK. Would love to know if anyone has this kind of problem... and even if it's the problem. • And lastly - the bike gets hot. In traffic today it was 33°C and my left leg calf was burning. I've never had a bike that throws out that much heat. So shorts are out ! That aside my first impressions are good. It's an easy ride. Still running in but the Sport mode really moves. I've never had a big trail before so I'm on a learning curve. And I will check out the USB-C situation.
Just wondering - is that a Harley-Davidson jacket you're wearing? :P Thanks for this demo... picking up my new '24 RA1250S this coming Monday and appreciate the dive into the tech features. Can't wait for Monday!
thinking of getting a 22 PanAm, thank you for this video Matt! and thanks for letting us know about the update to the software to charge your phone while riding, I would've just added a pigtail with a USB port on it to the battery though.......Sláinte!
Thanks Matt collected my Special today here in the Uk and boy did I need to see this. Pretty sure the Salesmen would have taken me through the modes etc but I would never have been able to retain the information for very long. Got to say having only test rode it prior to buying I already know it was worth trading my GS in for. Stay safe out there Ted
Nice video Matt. I rode one today down iIn Lake Elsinore. I was pretty impressed with that motor, wow , do a stage 1 and it will be fire 🔥 is that taller seat an accessory or oem? Buck 20, nice !!! One thing I thought about today was, I wouldn't be jumping that baby!
Thanks for the Info & Video Matt. Have you found any cables you can recommend? It would be nice to run a cable / hub up to the bars or nearby with 2 female USB. This way its easy to connect multiple items like cell and go pro... Ive had my Pan Am since they came out. Seat is painful so I may go to a saddleman. Personally, I think this and the mapping/navigation are a Joke! It's a "dual-sport bike" meant for trails and touring and this is the mapping??? Awful for the $$$ we spent on the bike.... I do my own software updates on this and my road bike, pretty simple process. Also you may want to cover the entry code access if you loose your key fob or battery dies, to get it started. Cheers😎
Great rundown Matt. But especially on an adventure/touring bike one would expect to have a charge port in a usb/usb-c you could hook up to your phone, camera, etc. That’s definitely a bummer and hopefully H-D will get that port “hot”
@@rso1411 Yes. But no power from it, when the bike are running. With so many riders, having their smartphones on a handlebar mount, when riding. It would be very convenient, if you also could get some charge power on the move.
@@22duke Yeah, my bet is that they update that port with a firmware update so it stays live while the bike is running. If not, you could always run a wire from one of the included ports under the seat.
Thanks. Matt, Looks like you were hauling ass through traffic 100 + mph. I did a test ride last Sunday. I'm older than you and am used to a Heritage Softail with big boards and long shifters for the feet. My legs are more forward. On th Pan am with big boots (hiking boots) my legs aims back from the knee. And I could barely get my foot in to shift between the peg and the shftier. Is there a longer arm for the shifter?
Matt you are very accurate with video thank you. Has the motor co given you feedback about the usb-c port? I believe it was supposed to be giving you power while motor running. Isn’t corporate scrambling for a fix as we speak. Isn’t it a software problem?
Thx, great info. I have a Garmin Montana with the AMPs mount, that will be my goto GPS Nav. I will be adding a 2 port USB mount to the handle bar for the phone and a gopro. Matt, what is the typical RPM for the bike at cruising speed. As an example my FLTRK is happy at 3000 RPM's.
If anyone is having trouble changing screen from light to dark background, push and hold home button for 3 seconds, this will toggle between dark and light. Information is not in owners manual. Seems that service manual is not from H-D yet.
The more I research this bike the more I want it. It started out as 50%, I'm pretty much at 99% that I'm going to get this bike. Thank you for the in-depth review. You did such a good job I'm actually mad at you because you're going to cost me money. Lol!
Hey Matt love your videos and advice I’m 5 ft 7 and a hefty 350 pound man just want to know if the pan American special is a good choice for me I don’t do any off-road stuff but just hwys
Matt, can you provide a link or information about where to find the adapters for the under seat power connectors please? I've searched the H-D site and Amazon with no luck. Thanks for the great videos.
Great detailed review of the controls and power -ports. It's a shame H-D didn't think about how to keep a phone or nav-unit charging while riding and attached to handle-bars. The other question/issue... What happens if you need to ride through 10-12 inches of water? Is the Battery box and regulator connections waterproof? Only an issue if you want/need to cross a small stream or deep puddle. Don't think the battery will be too happy if it's terminals are sitting in dirty water for more than a couple of seconds. The submerged water-bath will be similar to sticking a screw-driver across the terminals of that battery. Still only an issue for very deep puddles.
As always Matt very informational video. Question : you think there might be a update on the navigation system for the GPS to always stay on when losing service ??
UPDATE: There is now a software update available at dealerships to enable charging through the USB-C port while the bike is in operation.
What was HD thinking? no charging port up front in 2021?
What else is missing?
@@UncleFjester it was a matter of a software update. It works while the bike is running now.
@@MattLaidlaw thank you
Thru usb-c?? You can’t put enough power thru usb. That’s stupid. You need a pigtail. Just put it on.

So you used one of the hot leads under the seat?
Very comprehensive. This will definitely help new owners of the Pan America. Good job.
I bought one yesterday. Looking forward to piling on the miles.
That USB C port on the side of the info-center works to charge my phone while the bike is running. Mine is a 2022. Did they change it from ‘21 to ‘22?
Word from several PA forums is H-D now has a flash fix available to energize the USB-C port while the PA is running.
Very informative Matt! The Pan American sure does have some bells & whistles. And getting her up to a buck twenty seemed effortless.
Best explanation of the tech I've seen yet. Great job!
. Does this use a Harley app for navigation? I use an Apple phone and my navigation works even if I don't have a signal when I use Apple maps. Good review Thanks
Awesom review
Is there a possibility to place the Garmin XT gps above the TFT screen
Thank you for your response
Haha. Maybe a handle bar mount.
Test rode one today. Brilliant motorcycle. What do I do? I want one, but then I'd have to trade my Ultra, and the Ultra is perfect for touring....
Not gonna lie, I ride an Africa Twin Adv sports and I've really got my eye on this Harley. Something I'd never thought I'd say.
Nice review Matt, One question i currently ride 14-Limited why does Harley design the gas cap door to swing back and not forward.. Door is alway in the way when fueling.. Noticed the same design on this bike also..I can never get a straight answer thought i would ask the expert..
I don’t really know. I’ve never had a problem. I don’t think it would make a difference if it swung forward.
@@MattLaidlaw Thanks for the response Matt..
Might be so that it is less likely to open in an accident or hard landing, to minimize injury to the nether region!
Great info. I bought one last weekend and so far love the ride.
The attention to adjustment with things like the seat, pegs, screen is impressive . Looks like it would be possible to adjust on the fly?
Got my Panam S yesterday. So it's totally new to me. Loved this tuto. Loads of info. 3 things bug me already with the bike :
• The nav system goes through the phone, so you need to download the app, make an account and it's probably best to download a map.
Great review. This bike will definitely bring in Non-Harley guys and give Harley-Only guys a great option / add-to-stable bike.
please do an exhaust swap! or build it clubstyle
Just wondering - is that a Harley-Davidson jacket you're wearing? :P Thanks for this demo... picking up my new '24 RA1250S this coming Monday and appreciate the dive into the tech features. Can't wait for Monday!
Fantastic video, going for a test ride tomorrow so this was very timely and helpful!
At the 23:00 Minutes can you tell me where you find this adaptator cable Batterie tender to 12V ?
Dude you are a life saver. Thank you so very much for all your hard and work and excellent videos. VERY INFORMATIVE AND APPRECIATED!
Have a Super day…
Do you know if the PA will accept a separate GPS unit?
thinking of getting a 22 PanAm, thank you for this video Matt! and thanks for letting us know about the update to the software to charge your phone while riding, I would've just added a pigtail with a USB port on it to the battery though.......Sláinte!
Glad I was able to help out!!
What is this video on the Pan Am Hands-down great job!!
Very interesting and useful to see it all explained.
What a great video. Tons of valuable information. Great job big man. Thank you.
I have one off these motorcycles, and this was nice. Thanks.
It has a USB-C port.
@@22duke Really? That doesn't even make sense. I hope you're wrong about this. I will be very disappointed.
@@rso1411 Listen to what he says in the video. As soon as the Bike fires up. The power turns off.
Hey Matt, the USB C port is advertised as a charging port in addition to diagnostics and software updates
Really? Good to know. Well you can charge with it but it isn’t convenient. Thanks for the comment
Thank you for the great video. Did that bike have an aftermarket exhaust on it?
Think the next year's model may have a more refined version of navigation?
Excellent video. Honest and very detailed. Thank you, Matt. Ride safe!!!!
When it comes to Bluetooth coms (ex: helmet coms), do you have to use Harley specific or will any Bluetooth work? Thank in advance.
So do the under seat connectors work with gerbing gear?
Does anyone know where to find the plug Matt used to connect the heated gear plug to the usb charger?
Cant find out where the usb adaptor us for the charging port?? I do find the port
Still only an issue for very deep puddles.
hd doesn't give a shit about it's consumers.
As always Matt very informational video. Question : you think there might be a update on the navigation system for the GPS to always stay on when losing service ??
Matt, so if a PanAm is not equipped with the ARH, there won't be a flashing "Shock Icon"?
Matt, will the Cardo work with the Harley to hook up Bluetooth for your music and phone? I have bought the Pan America but it hasn’t come in yet.
