They do use DPUS in the middle and, on the end, sometimes on PSR trains. But these are true helpers because they are manned however the rear locomotive is unmanned and is a DPU.
I didn't count how many cars were on this train, but it's at least 100. The reason they have four in the middle is because the mountain pass they are climbing over is known as Soldier Sumit, and it has a grade of up to 2.5%. Also, to help reduce coupler strain and reduce the chance of string-lining. I also shot you a sub!
@@jamesedwards9857 thanks for the subscribe. On average loaded coal trains are 125 cars with 5 engines. They will weigh about 18,000 tons. When I ran on the KCS’s Shreveport sub there are a couple of spots where the grade gets close to 2%.
But now they also use DPU in the middle and rear of the train.

I was surprised to see so many C & N W cars. they have to be at least 30 years old !!
I was also surprised to them! They're definitely at least 30 years old.
Helper was well named especially during the age of steam!

The UP has significant issues with late, cancelled and embargos in the delivery of its cars to customers. 🚂

Biggest Coal Train I’ve ever run was 135 cars with 2 on the head 2 in the middle and 2 on the rear.
