We see so many beautiful bowls being produced and the whole process made to look so seamless that the actual dangers can (and are) overlooked. I think this is a timely reminder that your health and welfare are far more important - and to thank you for uploading this video showing one of the unforeseen problems a woodturner may face. I am glad you are now feeling better. And, as for Tuffy, please keep sending Phil pieces of wood to turn. Your kindness in this regard is well noted.
It’s possible that someone has already posted the same comments that I’m going to post. Decade upon decade ago and now I’m talking 50 years ago, it was for sure a practice to fix a wound in a tree or where a branch was cut off or broken to fill the cavity with tar. People used all kinds of tar including roofing cement. Chances are with increased temperature caused by your tooling they have gotten some not so wonderful vapors in fact I would bet that’s what happened. The refining of tar back in those days is a lot different than it is now. You did the right thing.
Could be and I believe you! My dad did the same but he used concrete. Not sure that would be so good for the chisel but it probably wouldn't give off fumes. 😊
Oh crikey, Phil, do take care of yourself! I can see why you wanted to turn it, it looks a real interesting piece of wood, but absolutely the right thing to do if it was making you ill. Take care friend!
What rebekkarn7301 said exactly! Thanks for uploading this and I am glad you stopped and went out and enjoyed yourself after you felt better. Looking forward to more less-deadly videos. 👍
WOW that's incredible glad you're okay! Maybe take it to your nearest University and see if they can tell what's going on with it! NICE weeler stay safe in it Phil!👍
Good evening, Phil. I will agree with a few of the commenters. You mentioned early in the video that it appeared to be a cut off limb and a burl grew around it. If a limb was cut off and a treatment applied to seal the grain ( like creosote) soaked into the wood and created your very unpleasant experience. Good call to stop. I like your scat vehicle. Great way to get fresh air and move forward.
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil wasn't expecting that to happen, but so glad you're ok. Nice shot of you on your, I don't know what type of vehicle it is, but your sure looked cool. Keep smiling 🤗🤗
Gad to see you make the right call with that. I had a reaction to Hickory while building a set of cabinets years ago that put me in the hospital for five days. I don't build with Hickory any more. Looking forward to seeing your next video!
Glad to know you're all good... I plan to watch you for years to come. Best of health, happiness, and wealth to you and yours!!! Thanx 4 sharing and I'll keep watching!!! ✌️😎👍
Wow Phil, I so glad you are ok. With that reaction you made the right choice. Nice Quad. Take care my friend and I'll join you for tea in the morning when I watch again. Cheers, Huw
Ohhhh the hidden dangers in the wood we work with. Hope you get to feeling better. Glad you showed what we could come accross. Keep up the amazing work. 👽
I agree with the one person that said they were glad you bailed out on this turn. Your health is more important than any piece of wood. I appreciate this video for the knowledge it gives. Keep taking care of yourself we want you around. Have a great day and hope we see you soon on another video.
Wow! I’m so glad there weren’t any long lasting problems from whatever was in that wood. Close call for you but no one’s fault except the person who originally sold it and maybe he didn’t know either. A jaunt on your jazzy “vehicle” is the perfect prescription for a complete recovery! 👍💕😊
I was in the Coast Guard and dealt with creosote pilings for Aids to Navigation. That piece of wood looks like it was soaked in creosote. Albeit not a very good job because the whole thing wasn't black. Just my humble opinion. Glad you are feeling better and are safe. Take Care.
I believe that burl with all the pitch in the cut off limb was sealed with a toxic paint. Sealing cut off limbs was a common practice in the past. A more natural healing occurs if left alone. Keep on turning...keeps us busy and entertained. I like your 4x4
Hi Phil im glad you stopped when you did i was worried while watching the video at the point you stopped. Glad you put the video out to show that everyones health and wellbeing comes first, im glad you recovered and are well . Take care see you on the next video. God bless you Phil xxxx Amanda
Last fall I brought home a little piece of a small tree that fell over, and thought it was wild cherry, because of the smooth bark. But it was olive green, inside and softer than cherry. After turning a rough shape while it was wet, planning to let it dry, before finishing, I developed a full body hive reaction and difficulty breathing. I haven't finished it, yet, but sure wonder what it is. Maybe some kind of sumac. A good treatment for such reactions is a Tagamet and a Benadryl pill. Each blocks a different allergic reaction.
That's too bad Phil. I'm sure it would of been something great as usual. But agree that your health is more important. Have a great weekend Phil. And your 5/8" guage looks like mine. Time for a new one. Lol
It was going to be a nice piece Phil, but I'm glad that you have decided to not work with it anymore. Hope everything is OK. Keep it going, it's a real pleasure to watch you at work 👍
Again, thank you for sharing. Who wood of known. This was very useful information for me because I turn quite a bit of fog wood and ditch wood. Ill keep this in the back of my mind. And keep safe.
Sure glad you are feeling better Phil. Would be great if you could figure out what type of wood that was. Just loved the way you ended the video. Nice looking ATV.
Glad you are alright Phil! Too bad that happened, that was a really interesting piece of wood! And, I think Tuffy, knew exactly what he was doing, I wouldn't trust him! Just kidding! LOL!
Glad you stop when you did! I had a similar experience with padauk but stupid me kept going. The sanding got fine dust into my lungs even through my mask. I was absolutely miserable for days.
Wow Phil, so glad you are alright and knew when to stop! Thanks for sharing this. It's so important to keep reminding each other that while this is a wonderful craft, it is not without risks. Especially after everything you've been through the last year or so, grateful you're ok. 💗
So glad you are OK. From the title I knew something was going to happen, but I didn't expect THAT! Hope your wee drive got some fresh air back into your lungs.
Glad you are feeling better. Be safe. Glad it was a short one tonight I was working on a turning and had to stop to fix dinner now it's early I can go back to it
Glad you’re feeling better. Yeah, when a wood species that you’re familiar with does that to you, it would seem that something got in it at some point. Might have to rethink using wood that the origin and its journey to you isn’t fully known.
Phil, I'm glad that you always put your health and safety always first. I had a close call changing mower blades on my riding mower. I was using a 12-point socket on the 15/16" mower blade nuts and the 12-point socket stripped and let loose of the nut, and I came extremely close to getting a very bad cut on my hand. To the hardware store for a 15/16" 6-point socket and wrench, new work gloves, and ordered two new nuts online. New blades are installed, and I lived to mow tomorrow. 12-point sockets are no good safety wise.
A little disappointed not to see a beautiful creation this week but you're 100% correct to abandon that piece of wood! And to give us a good reminder about the potential hazards. Glad you didn't suffer any lasting symptoms!
Take care Phil, its very strange some of the wood we come across, the skill is to know when to stop as you did, life is too short , please look after yourself .. I love the Side by Side

Thank you, Angela! 😊

It takes a wise man to realise when he’s had enough Phil. So glad you did the wise thing and hope you’re fully recovered by now. See you next time.
😊

Thank you, I will 😊
So sorry you got ill but I'm so glad you did this educational video to warn other turners! Great job Phil 👏
Thanks, Duchess! Doing better, now! 😊
Good evening, Phil.

That ya go, Ray. Thank you! 😊
Glad you're ok after all, Phil. Quite a burnout at the end.
Bill
😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil wasn't expecting that to happen, but so glad you're ok. Nice shot of you on your, I don't know what type of vehicle it is, but your sure looked cool. Keep smiling 🤗🤗
Thank you, John! It's what we call a Side By Side, two seater mostly off-road vehicle but I drive it around the city quite a bit. 😊
Very wise move, better safe than sorry.
😊
That's a shame! That Burl is pretty. Don't feel bad Tuffy! You couldn't have known.
So glad you're OK Phil!
😊
I am still keeping my fingers crossed for Phil. I also will look very close to any future wood I send that's for sure!!!.... TM
Glad you're ok. Never heard that phrase "set it on fire and burn the house down". Funny.
😊
Phil, I laughed so hard at this after you said it would chase you down the street! Glad you came out of it OK. Love your videos!
Thanks, Scott! 😊
Scary! So glad you’re ok now, thank you for sharing the dangers!
😊
Whoa, I’m sorry Phil that happened. I’m glad you stopped when you did. 🙏❤️
😊
Gad to see you make the right call with that.
I had a reaction to Hickory while building a set of cabinets years ago that put me in the hospital for five days. I don't build with Hickory any more.
Looking forward to seeing your next video!
Good plan, stay safe! 😊
glad you are ok.
😊
Sorry you had problems. I am glad you stopped when you did. But looks like you headed out to get some good fresh air.
😊
Glad to know you're all good... I plan to watch you for years to come. Best of health, happiness, and wealth to you and yours!!! Thanx 4 sharing and I'll keep watching!!! ✌️😎👍
Good to know, thank you! 😊

Thank you, Wendy! 😊
Ouch!! I'm glad there were no lasting effects!
Me too! 😊
Wow Phil, I so glad you are ok.
With that reaction you made the right choice.
Nice Quad.
Take care my friend and I'll join you for tea in the morning when I watch again.
Cheers, Huw
Thanks, Huw! I think I'll blame the one I'm working on now on this one. My brain must still be foggy cause it ain't going so good! LOL! 😊
Ohhhh the hidden dangers in the wood we work with. Hope you get to feeling better. Glad you showed what we could come accross. Keep up the amazing work. 👽
Yup, guess we gotta be careful all the time! 😊
I understand completely Phil, I'm looking forward to your next one, get plenty of rest my friend!
😊

Workin' on the next one now, Lynda, thank you! 😊
Darn man. Scary stuff. Glad you bailed when you did!
😊
Glad you are OK. Great little set of wheels!
😊
Good choice, not worth harming yourself with 👍
😊
Wow! I’m so glad there weren’t any long lasting problems from whatever was in that wood. Close call for you but no one’s fault except the person who originally sold it and maybe he didn’t know either. A jaunt on your jazzy “vehicle” is the perfect prescription for a complete recovery! 👍💕😊
Thank you, BobbieJean! 😊
Good to watch Phil as always - I can't help thinking your Kawasaki escape was the right thing to do!
For sure! 😊
I'm glad you are doing better. It looked like a nice burl.
😊
I was in the Coast Guard and dealt with creosote pilings for Aids to Navigation. That piece of wood looks like it was soaked in creosote. Albeit not a very good job because the whole thing wasn't black. Just my humble opinion. Glad you are feeling better and are safe. Take Care.
Thanks, Roger! 😊
Glad you are better!

So glad you showed us what can go wrong with wood and how it can affect our health. Your work is excellent. Keep on keeping on.
Thanks for watching! 😊
How bizarre. Wow glad you recovered! I hope you enjoyed your excursion! Be well.
😊
Hi Phil im glad you stopped when you did i was worried while watching the video at the point you stopped. Glad you put the video out to show that everyones health and wellbeing comes first, im glad you recovered and are well . Take care see you on the next video. God bless you Phil xxxx Amanda
Thank you so much, Amanda! 😊

😊
I'm so glad you took the warning and bailed on this piece of who-knows-what that was! Looked like a beautiful day for a ride in the woods!
Me too, thank you! 😊
The end was great. I like that shade of green, as long as you weren't that shade when you finally pitchedthat wood.
😊
Glad your'e OK, even with all the protective gear. Thanks for sharing, might save someone else someday.
😊
That's why I like watching you. I always learn something, you're always positive, and that was a fun exit. Hope it was a good drive.
Thanks, Mike! 😊
So glad you are okay, Phil. I clicked 'like', but I of course am not happy for that close call with your health. Take care.

Boy oh boy, Phil. That "wood" was lethal! I had to laugh at the end of the video. You're a bit of a lead foot, huh?😉 See ya!

Smart move. Got have an enjoyable ride.
Yes indeed! 😊
Again, thank you for sharing. Who wood of known. This was very useful information for me because I turn quite a bit of fog wood and ditch wood. Ill keep this in the back of my mind. And keep safe.
Yup, gotta know what you are dealing with but, sometimes it's just plain hard to know! 😊
Sure glad you are feeling better Phil. Would be great if you could figure out what type of wood that was. Just loved the way you ended the video. Nice looking ATV.

Wow Phil, so glad you recovered from that quickly. Looking forward to the next one. Hopefully you had an enjoyable ride.
The ride was great, Mark! Gonna do it again today, hit some yard sales! 😊
Thanks for sharing this Phil - makes it important to be absolute safe around suspicious wood!
Very true! 😊
So good to hear that what ever it was is now cleared up, Thank you for the warning and sharing
😊
Wow Phil !! I am so sorry you got a little ill over this piece . I am so glad you are alright . I guess one never knows .

Your little green golf-cart is awesome!
My yard sale vehicle! 😊

Someone must of put something on the tree when they cut that branch??
Very cool vehicle!
Hard to know, Luie. I'm just glad I stopped! 😊
Phil, I'm glad that you always put your health and safety always first. I had a close call changing mower blades on my riding mower. Wow! That could of been a close call! I'm so glad you're okay.

Love your dune buggy thingy. And the little birdies!
LOL! Yeah, those birdies are everywhere! 😊
A little disappointed not to see a beautiful creation this week but you're 100% correct to abandon that piece of wood! And to give us a good reminder about the potential hazards. Glad you didn't suffer any lasting symptoms!
Thank you, Leigh! 😊
Привет, Фил! Когда я увидел первый кадр то подумал, что будет очередной шедевр. Главное, ты вовремя понял и не пострадал! Здоровья и удачи!!!!
Спасибо, Иван! Урок выучен! 😊
Sad to see your project went bad on you, but glad to see your okay. See you next week!
😊
Holy cow! I’m glad you’re ok!
😊
Hi Phil, would you consider completing this unique and interesting piece wearing a respirator mask? Workshop ventilation is paramount.
Like Elvis, this piece has left the building (property)! 😊
Whoa glad you're good now Phil, Love the vehicle :)
Thanks 👍
Take care Phil, its very strange some of the wood we come across, the skill is to know when to stop as you did, life is too short , please look after yourself .. I love the Side by Side
😊
