In-vitro gametogenesis: New technology could revolutionize reproductive options

  • New scientific developments could revolutionize one way humans can reproduce, with a technique called in-vitro gametogenesis. But medical experts are questioning the ethics behind the technology, which allows them to create embryos by reprogramming adult cells into sperm and egg cells. Dr. Jessica Shepherd, chief medical officer at Verywell Health, has more.

There was a TED talk about a young boy, now a guy, who received a printed organ. The company used tissue samples to print the organ, so the body wouldn't reject the organ, being made from tissue samples from the boy. The transplant was a success.
Imagine going into see a dr for such a transplant and being told your surgery date within a few weeks if that, instead of having to wait months or even years for a compatible donor.

This is not the same as in vitro fertilization. In vitro fertilization involves fertilizing an egg from a female with the sperm cell from the male in a lab environment, growing it to a sufficient stage, and then re-implanting it into the woman. This is not what we’re talking about here. Let’s start with the definition of what a gamete is-
“A reproductive cell containing only one set of dissimilar chromosomes, or half the genetic material necessary to form a complete organism (i.e., haploid). Gametes are formed through meiosis (reduction division), in which a germ cell undergoes two fissions, resulting in the production of four gametes. During fertilization, male and female gametes fuse, producing a diploid (i.e., containing paired chromosomes) zygote.” The sperm cell from the male contains the male gametes, and the egg cell from the female contains the female gametes. In order to form a zygote, these cells must combine. Also, what they’re talking about here is not taking just any cell to try to genetically engineer. They would have to be using stem cells. And isolating stem cells is much harder to accomplish. If scientists managed to do this, I would be fearful of the ramifications anyway.

My wife was unable to have children, but I have to say... there are so many unwanted kids in the world today, so many humans in general...
I've always seen the benefits of space exploration, but a lot of people love to throw out the age old "we have a lot of problems here on earth, why not throw the money at that?" For the sake of being devil's advocate... maybe we could invest a SMALL portion of this money to adoption and making that feasible and then fix other huge issues... homelesness, starvation, easily treated global illness... this is kinda messed up like people who want a pure bred dog or cat when there's a hundred at the ASPCA ready to take home and be loved.

Jesse, those are all red herrings. What does money spent on space exploration have to do with money spent on things like adoption? Nothing. What you’re suggesting is that SpaceX or NASA or the European space agency should pay adoption fees for people looking to adopt children? That’s ridiculous. And for your information, there are more families trying to adopt children than there are children available to adopt. If you want one of them, then go adopt one of them, if you qualify.

[8]But that which is made with hands is cursed, as well it, as he that made it: he, because he made it; and it, because, being corruptible, it was called god.
[9]For the ungodly and his ungodliness are both alike hateful unto God.
[10]For that which is made shall be punished together with him that made it.
[11]Therefore even upon the idols of the Gentiles shall there be a visitation: because in the creature of God they are become an abomination, and stumblingblocks to the souls of men, and a snare to the feet of the unwise.
[12]For the devising of idols was the beginning of spiritual fornication, and the invention of them the corruption of life.
[13]For neither were they from the beginning, neither shall they be for ever.
[14]For by the vain glory of men they entered into the world, and therefore shall they come shortly to an end.

I only see this non-sense as a contributing factor of causing kids to end up staying in the foster system longer & aging out.
