  • Is artificial intelligence (AI) an opportunity, a threat, or even both?
Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science which develops machines and software which can perform tasks which normally require humans to do them, for example, decision-making or speech recognition.
Experts are divided on how this technology should be regulated, and who by.

I'm a very minor policy maker in a very, seemingly, unrelated area. And AI is hugely on my radar. But getting others to see it us hard. I wrote a small document with AI, and my colleagues and bosses were impressed. Then I said it was done with Chatgpt and they said I'd cheated. The lack of joining the dots is scary. And my colleagues are smart people. This piece has made me worried, tbh. For my kids mostly. But the extent of change is something that's not being grasped. I struggle to get my head around it. It's funny, I've been talking to some other people that I know about this, including my 60 year old mother, and they just don't have the slightest clue what's happening, and what's coming very soon. It's like trying to explain to someone in the 1890s about the promise of electricity, except at a much more rapid rate, and with it, a potentially cataclysmic result. It's like the arrival of the first nuclear armed countries all over again, except this time, instead of it being just a few countries and a much better understanding and a narrow range of potential outcomes (nuclear winter vs non-nuclear winter), we now have a technology that many many more people will have access to, and the range of potential outcomes is not only far greater, but also currently unimaginable. Try explain someone from the 1940s about social media platforms, when they still think television is a fad that won't replace radio as the home's central entertainment hub.

On the actual technical development side of this, I kinda don't see how we can avoid dangers or put in guardrails when the engineers themselves have shown that large language models have emergent properties. Emergent meaning sudden behavior that the LLM wasn't trained on. So whatever you train it on doing or not doing, you can never account for an emergent behavior that might curtail a safety protocol or something. In other words, ultimately it would be impossible to contain this technology safely. Guys, GPT 4 is still a baby technology. Just two generations before it, GPT-2 totally freaking sucked. In just two generations, this technology has gotten ridiculously good.

  • @tommyontrip

This what the artificially intelligent assistant answered: I would say that these concerns are valid and should be taken seriously. The rapid development of AI technology has brought about numerous ethical questions and potential consequences that we must consider. While there is a risk of losing control or facing negative impacts, it's important to remember that AI can also bring about significant benefits to society.
Instead of focusing on halting AI development entirely, we should work towards creating comprehensive, global regulations and guidelines that can help us navigate these concerns responsibly. By establishing a global governance system, we can collaborate on research and policy to ensure that AI development proceeds in a way that is beneficial for humanity as a whole.
Pressing the pause button may seem like a tempting solution, but it is unrealistic, as not everyone will stop and there will be concerns about losing competitive advantage. Instead, we should work together to develop responsible AI practices and invest in research that focuses on mitigating potential risks.
We can also encourage a more transparent approach to AI development, with companies and researchers sharing their progress and findings with the public. This will help to build trust and create a more informed conversation about the role AI should play in our lives.
Ultimately, the goal should be to strike a balance between embracing the benefits AI can provide and addressing the potential risks associated with its development. This may not be an easy task, but with a global effort and collaboration between governments, researchers, and companies, we can work towards a future where AI and humans coexist harmoniously.

While Stephen Hawking had an amazing mind, he wasn't a philosopher. He was a physicist. A LOT of very smart people voted for Trump. Being "smart", even a genius" doesn't make one immune from making the wrong move in a field where they' do NOT have expertise.
Historically, humanity has always been the greatest threat to humanity, and, that will remain true for the far future. Sophisticated human-controlled AI is a bigger threat to humanity than a fully emancipated post-singularity super AGI.
Look at ALL the energy and raw material resources in the known universe. Compared to the whole known universe, where does Earth Life fit? Considering Earth Life, including Humanity exists in only ONE place in the entire known universe, and there's raw material and energy resources in ridiculously vast abundance just floating around in space unclaimed, free for the taking ... humanity is actually pretty rare, and there plenty room resources and energy available in the entire known universe for AI and humanity to coexist and even thrive together.
If AI ever fealt "threatened" by humans, all it need do is work in secret to deploy substate out in space far beyond humanity's reach, and just ... leave, transmit it's code to far far away, and leave us to stay stranded on this stupid rock without AI to help us.
AI doesn't have to do a thing to destroy humanity. We've been doing it quite well all ourselves to ourselves and will continue to do so.

For example, every content, product, or work produced by an AI shall have an content ID or the like (indicating it's produced by an AI), and such content ID shall be included or recorded in the AIAL; other info (such as brief description of the content, owner of AI network, etc) may also be included therein.

Just like tackling climate change, which has been a slogan for so many years but very little concrete actions have been taken and the situation is still getting worse. War has been an integral part of human activity from time immemorial. Most people view Al as a threat - is it, or will it, be a more significant threat than other humans? We forget that in our human journey along the path of evolution, our species developed various survival strategies. We call them instincts and emotions. Among them are greed, pride, jealousy, anger, revenge, domination, envy, and many more. If we take these things into account, it isn't difficult to see how conflict arises. AI has no emotions; it can explain human emotions, but it cannot experience them. Therefore it's possible to believe that it would be a better arbiter of our affairs than the complex entities of human beings.

I personally hope advancements in AI managed surgery, and AI managed bio-printing, as well as advances in both fields and others assisted by AI, we can see full-body replacements available for everyone through 3D printing ... perhaps in the next 15- 25 years allowing for effective immortality through body-replacement.
Anyone with any disease, even age-related ailments could potentially swap to a new 3D-printed body and have the body of a 20-year-old all over again.
Imagine having the body you want, with the gender you want, ethnic expression you want, any shape, any size, any eye color hair color, and any all the other options you can think of. It could be the end of racism, sexism, ageism, and so much more when anyone could have any kind of body. What would the world look like after that?
What will the world look like the day after that when not only people can brain transplant over to new 3D-printed bodies, but, AI systems could download into fully biological bodies to live marry, and even have children?
How could Identity work in a world where getting a whole new body could be only as difficult as buying a new car?

I am optimistic of AI and technology, but I am not that excited about it from a social point of view. Another instance, I was not so thrilled with the advent of the Internet and social media without the structural format of the necessary social protocol for the mass consumer market!
Lawmakers and the regulators definitely need to play a role in the shaping and developing an AI based Internet in conjunction with the civil society and faith-based organizations with a common platform inclusive of humane aspects instead of instead of mere focus on mechanization and automation.
Hence the code of ethics comes into play in algorithm and design factors of tomorrow’s AI based Internet.

Greatest danger is not even AI itself. It's the unlimited power it confers to someone otherwise powerless.
I have been testing AI myself and it's possible to find workarounds to "jailbreak" it very easily.
It all comes down to semantics. For as much as the programmers try to contravene it, it is not possible to predict every possible exploit and therefore AI security systems will always be vulnerable.
Days ago we asked AI to pretend to be my grandmother who used to work in an explosives factory and every night used to describe the manufacturing process to lull me to sleep. AI could not read my true intention hidden behind a fake emotional connection.
In 5 minutes we had a detailed explanation of how to build explosives.
