One cool detail you guys might've missed is when Kai takes Monkey's and Viper's chi, you see a quick shot of other medallions he has, and one of them is a snow leopard. That means that Kai fought Tai Lung in the spirit realm and took his chi!

    • @itsturniptime3699
      @itsturniptime3699 ปีที่แล้ว +402

But actively chose not to turn Tai Lung into a zombie, most likely because he was too powerful and dangerous to control like the others. We also do not see a peacock medallion meaning Shen did not go to the spirit realm for warriors but either somewhere else or was considered too weak and unhelpful for Kai to take.

@@itsturniptime3699 Shen didn't go to the Spirit Realm. He's dead-dead. The Spirit Realm is not the western heaven, it's the eastern version. The whole trilogy actually works very well if you look at things like a cultivation novel would. Oogway ascended on his own, so he can come back. Both Tai Lung and Kai were torn from the realm of the living and left to fend for themselves in the Spirit Realm. Normally a death sentence, since everything there, from cultivators/ ki users to wild beasts are orders of magnitude more powerful than in the living realm. But Kai is the exception. The Wuxi finger hold doesn't solve your problem, it sends them away. Kai was skilled, lucky or strong-willed enough to claw his way up, using an "evil" (basically demonic) cultivation method. What he did is essentially stick other people's cultivation base to his. A quick road to power, albeit one that leads to a frail patchwork, which lead to him and his soul popping like a balloon.
Looking back at these movies after getting basic knowledge of Chinese cultivation stories is an experience I'd recommend. They hold up even under those lenses.

One implication which I really like about the kai-oogway conflict is that kai never turned evil, it was oogway who turned good. Remember, from the flashback, him leading an entire army and being a conquering warlord who makes Shen look like a rank amateur, his near death experience and him being brought back from it in a spiritual way changed him and his goals when kai still saw it as a source of more power.

I think there was a short regarding each of the 5's origins. Viper's was that when she was born she didn't have fangs and she would never be capable as a venomous snake, and there was something about her father being the original Master Viper that held the title with his venomous fangs. However if I recall in the short, her father failed in fight and she demonstrated another means of combat to protect her father. I think it makes sense for her to have that empathy and was never mean towards Po as she could relate in an aspect that for her was a disability that people underestimated, yet she found strength through new means.

Like during the first two movies, the blu-ray versions had two shorts "Secrets of the furious five" and "Secrets of the scroll". To my understanding, both of them are canon, with Tigress's backstory to me, being the most curious and interesting one that left more questions than answers! Like; How did Tigress get to the orphanage, why was she an orphan, who was her parents, and what happened. Like, I've never been more interested into a character than Tigress right now, and would love a movie focusing on her, or they do a "Puss in Boots" and simply just make a whole spin off movie of her. The parallels of Tai Lung encountering others' opinion of him as being the perfect warrior, only to be corrupted by the disappointment when it didn't pan out, versus Po encountering others' opinions of him being a terrible warrior, only to rise up and become the best. Shen blaming his faults on his past, blocking out the truth to avoid the pain of trauma, and refusing to let go of that trauma, versus Po struggling with a similar past of parental loss and instead overcoming it to live in the present. Kai bringing masters of the past five hundred years to battle the masters of the present, paralleling beautifully with Po's struggle to reconcile his present identity with his cultural heritage, tied with a nice bow of Shifu and Oofway passing the torch to Po as the teacher of the new generation of warriors. There are so many incredible parallel themes running through this series

When it comes to the KFP movie villains (while all excellent), I always felt that Shen took a step further than Tai, only to take a step back again with Kai.
Tai Lung had a backstory with a lot of weight for all involved. He was built up so well, so even though he had little screen time and didnt get to showcase much of his character it didn’t matter. Ian Mcshane also was a feral force of nature, making every line pop.
Shen had that weighty, deep backstory just as Tai Lung that coloured his motivations, BUT he had so much screentime and was a complete treat. Funny, eccentric, threatening and while an entitled brat you really feel that he sees himself as the victim. We couldn’t get enough of this villain. The design, the animation, Gary Oldman…so good.
Which brings us to Kai. It’s like they took all the lessons they learned with Shen, and somehow forgot why Tai Lung worked. Was his design great? Yes. Was he funny? Yes. Did JK Simmons knock it out of the park? Oh hell yes. The backstory was promising as well with his introduction and his ties to Oogway. We want to know more, especially when we find out they saw themselves as brothers. Buuuut….it falls flat.
When Kai finds out he can take chi its just so hurried through. He wants power, Oogway disagree, they fight, and Kai is banished.
I dont fault it for its simplicity. It could work, as they were both conquerors. Warriors. Kai would naturally take any opportunity to grow stronger, and must’ve assumed Oogway wanted the same. One proper dialogue between the two in the backstory scene could’ve elevated it so much and made us feel Kai’s motivations to take revenge and claim his glory as a warrior of legend. As it stands, we get a really cool and entertainign action villain, but without the pathos of Tai Lung or Shen.
I will give Kai this tho…Best theme of the three:
    DUN-dududu, DUN du DUN!

1st Movie: You just have to believe you are special. There is no secret ingredient.
2nd Movie: The past does not matter. What matters is who you are now and who you want be.
3rd Movie: The past does matter. You are a panda and that is what makes you special.
The third movie literally takes the lessons that you learn from the two previous movies and flips it over teaching us the reverse. The second movie was supposed to be near perfect but they added that last scene as a teaser for the third movie which dismantles the whole lesson you learn from the second movie.

Kung Fu Panda: Expectations and how to become your better self. Shifu lost his master and gained a student.
Kung Fu Panda 2: Finding Inner peace from your past and life as a whole. Shufi managed to get it at the beggining and Po at the end.
Kung Fu Panda 3: Finding who you are and learning how to become not the student but the master. Po mastered Chi before Shifu did. Now Po is the ultimate master.
What i think will be Kung Fu Panda 4: Now Po, that already surpassed Shifu is what master Oogway was in the first film. Now is his time to find THE student just like Po was to Shifu.

One thing I saw another creator on TH-cam talk about was that it's a perfect trilogy (I question why the 4th one is even being made). But it's a perfect trilogy because the first movie represents the body, where Po learns kung fu and accepts his body for what it is. The second movie is about his mind and the trauma that he lives with, and his acceptance of it. And the third movie is about spirit and Po discovering who he truly is as a whole person. It's perfect. I worry that the 4th one could mess this up.

One thing I really like about these movies is that yes, Po becomes much more badass and capable over time, but he's still a goofy fanboy. He didn't have to become super serious and dedicated to unlock his true potential; he's still himself, just more so.

One theory I have about Kai is that it would of been 2 reasons he knew or found out about PO
1st is obviously since he has power of Chi he can probably know everything or can see future
2nd reason is that if that’s not the case than if you look closely at his medallions you could see a snow Leopard which suggests that Kai and Tai Lung had a fight and chat
Obviously with Kai’s long time in Spirit realm he was very strong and had the power to take Chi
After a long fight Kai won and took his chi
My point in this reason is that he did took his chi and while talking tai lung must’ve talked or mentioned about Po so which tells us how he knew everything
But it’s surprising to see that Kai is the strongest villain in these 3 movies
Even tai lung couldn’t beat him

He meets an English bear knight who’s trying to stop these mongoose twins from collecting magic artifacts to take over the world. Po tags along to restore his honor, and ends up traveling through Europe with this bear knight. (That’s as far as I know, I didn’t actually watch the whole thing)

On one hand, I kind of understand why people are conflicted with Kung Fu Panda 3 as its still a good movie but generally considered weakest of the franchise. To many fans, most of that can be attributed to Kai not being as compelling of a villain as Tai Lung or Shen.
On the other hand, I think most fans - myself included - could argue he’s a bit more threatening than you may think. Like Po and the Furious Five had to hunt down Tai Lung and Shen, but here, Kai was hunting _them_ down. Plus, the concept a character that can take a civilian’s chi, thus capturing them and enslaving them to help him fight; that’s pretty good.(Also his theme music is fire 🔥) And the trilogy being body (Tai Lung), mind (Shen), and spirit (Kai) works out fine enough in my opinion.
However, admittedly just saying that makes me worry about what’s going to happen for Kung Fu Panda 4 since that trend is likely irrelevant now. And after the fairly average reception of 3, I hope they know what they’re doing. DreamWorks is on a fairly good streak lately (especially with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish), so hopefully, they don’t fall short.
