Chasing Ghosts - Gadigal Country - Yabun 2024

It had been seven years since I was last at the Yabun Festival in Sydney. High temperatures, two years of pandemic and uninspiring line-ups had kept me away. But this year, despite the rather unappealing weather forecast, I decided I needed to go again. The principal reason for going was to see Chasing Ghosts, who I’d not heard of before this year’s line-up was announced, but whose music on Spotify really impressed me. The festival programme’s write up also made them sound very interesting:
“Chasing Ghosts founder, frontman, and chief songwriter Jimmy Kyle dives deep into challenging themes, fearlessly crafting songs that touch on the harsh realities of life. His nerves in tackling these topics serve as proof that he’s onto something meaningful.”
“For their latest work, Jimmy Kyle and his bandmates delved into uncharted territory while staying true to their organic, instrument-driven sound. Their new album features rich bluesy guitar work, vocal harmonies, and lush Hammond B3 organ, all rooted in their punk rock backgrounds.”
Chasing Ghosts didn’t disappoint with their short but energetic set. I was only going to record three songs but ended up with four. Always a sure sign that I really enjoyed it.

The weather was a challenge for both performers and audience. When I arrived it was 40º C and there was no shade anywhere near the stage. Two hours later when Chasing Ghosts took to the stage, the southerly change had arrived, no rain but the gusts of wind were strong. It was not ideal videoing weather as is evident from my results. Still, I’m very glad I got to see them. I’m now looking forward to their next visit to Sydney, a much longer set in a more comfortable environment.
