In answer to the common criticism, why do you go to a concert and watch it from behind a screen, there is a simple answer, because I like it. Sure I miss some of the immediacy of the moment, but I also gain things that add to my enjoyment of the experience. There's the challenge and creativity involved in trying to catch that moment to the best of my ability and my limited resources. I know I'm never going to create professional quality footage but that's not the point. Above everything else it's to give me something to take away and relive in the years ahead.
If you own the copyright of any of the material on my channel and would like me to remove it, please contact me. I have removed a couple of videos but have had more of my footage used to enhance other videos. These have included Wreckless Eric, Midge Ure, The Damned (in one of the band's own music videos) and Kev Carmody (by SBS in a TV doco). Obviously, I'd prefer the latter to the former.

Start Making Sense: Talking Heads Tribute - Sydney - 25 January 2025
There’s a fallacy held by many that musicians in tribute bands are somehow second rate, not quite up to scratch. That because they spend their nights covering other people’s songs, they are not as good as those who first performed them. Yet that’s simply not necessarily true, and anyone seeing the Talking Heads tribute band, Start Making Sense, will immediately appreciate just how talented each and every member of this tribute band is. I don’t know why they have dedicated themselves to perfecting the sound of Taking Heads, and it’s really not important. I’m just grateful that they’re touring the world, keeping the performance of these great songs alive.
They played for over two hours, a total of 25 songs, and while I would have replaced one or two of them with a couple of others, there was no shortage of great songs. I also appreciated the couple of deep tracks they included. They made me want to go and listen to my Talking Head albums in full rather than limiting myself to algorithm-fed streams. I was restrained and only videoed eight personal favourites:
And She Was (00:07)
Wild Wild Life (03:51)
This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) (07:43)
Psycho Killer (13:20)
Life During Wartime (17:32)
Road to Nowhere (22:53)
Once in a Lifetime (27:27)
Burning Down the House (32:48)
I saw Talking Heads on their first tour of Australia in 1979. I remember I was a little disappointed with their performance. They played a lot of unreleased songs which differed from the style I was familiar with. They were already moving away from their earliest sound, the first of many changes they would make during their career. It didn’t stop me buying their albums, and I learnt to move with them. Unfortunately, I never got to see them towards the end of their time together when I could have experienced the full breadth of their musical legacy. This performance by Start Making Sense allowed me to do that. Sure, I’d rather have been seeing the real deal but this was definitely the next best thing.

Canberra XTC tribute band, XACTO, supported U.S. tribute band, Start Making Sense, at their Sydney show. Both XTC and Talking Heads formed about the same time and released their debut albums a year apart. Both bands were swept up in the early days of punk but neither fitted the mould. Both bands wrote some brilliant songs, albeit on the opposite sides of the Atlantic. I wonder if they ever play...

I bought “Tabaran” when it first came out in 1990. To this day it remains a landmark Australia album. It was also responsible for starting me on my musical journey with David Bridie. I’ve had the privilege of seeing My Friend The Chocolate Cake live twice, but never got the chance to see Not Drowning, Waving. So the announcement of this performance of “Tabaran” at the Sydney Festival was a drea...

Cash Savage and The Last Drinks always perform brilliantly, even when one of their members is missing. I had deliberately placed myself on the right side so that I’d get a clear view of Kat Mear on fiddle. Unfortunately, she couldn't make this performance. Filling in, Anna Langdon provided us with some very haunting sax instead. It was wonderful seeing the band back at City Recital Hall where t...

Perry’s performances with a full band are so infrequent that I’m always reluctant to miss one because I don’t know how long I might have to wait until the next one. And this particular show had two other big pluses for me; there’d be no noisy wining and dining throughout, and Johnny Barker’s imagery would be forming the backdrop. I’ve admired Johnny’s art work (posters and videos) for Perry for...

In recent years I’ve seriously thought of finally seeing them but circumstances have always prevented me. Fantastic performance! Thank you for sharing! 🫶🫶🫶
It's a little old now but glad you enjoyed it.
@@Peter_LiveMusicI just checked thru your videos! Peter, there are some awesome musicians you’ve seen! I’ll look forward to slowly making my way through! Best wishes, from a new subscriber! 🎶🎶🎶🙋♀️🇦🇺
@@sunlion9676 There's quite a few now. My tastes are rather eclectic but I'm sure you'll find a few things you'll like. Sound quality varies from video to video, depending on so many different factors. But overall the more recent videos are best as I now have better equipment than when I started out. Thanks for subscribing. Enjoy.
Now I'm not a young man!
Saw Liz last night for the first time. She was supporting Emily Barker here in Stroud. I was totally blown away - tremendous songwriting and delivery. Instant fan - I even bought a Liz Stringer teatowel from her merch stall! Great to find this video of her live just with the guitar - thanks
Oh, and the lyrics to "Little Fears, Little Loves" are spot on
Yes, I remember how impressed I was with Liz the first time I saw her live. She was with her band then. You can see a couple of songs from that show here: th-cam.com/video/oaFcvPaDHls/w-d-xo.html But whether she's with a band or solo, she's a great performer. I'm hoping to see her again later in the year when she tours Australia to promote her new album. I'm a little jealous of you getting to one of her gigs with Emily Barker. I'd love to see the two of them together. Emily's not as well know back in her home country. Hoping that changes. Thanks for commenting.
I have yet to see her live, so until that day I am grateful that people like you upload these videos. Thank you so much!
I've had the pleasure of seeing Grace live twice now. She's a terrific performer - wonderful personality with a great sense of humour, but also of course, dealing with very serious subjects. I hope you get to see her sometime soon. I video a few songs for the shows I go to basically for my own enjoyment later and help with my memory as the years go by. But I upload them so people like you, who can't get to live shows, can get a glimpse. I hope I do the performances justice and I hope I bring the musicians more fans. Check out this earlier show, it's probably a better video: th-cam.com/video/7fPAS1FwczA/w-d-xo.html Thanks very much for commenting.
And then just a few days later Walking Deads play Camelot - I reckon our local guys gave the energy levels a fair shake too! Day after Scarecrow People. Great run of tribute bands at Camelot this year.
I've thought about seeing Walking Deads for a couple of years now but have never actually made it to one of their shows. Have you seen them and are they good? I've seen Scarecrow People numerous times - a great band. I have mixed feelings about Camelot. Yes, they do great things for smaller bands but I always find the audiences too noisy there. But that's usually the case with any music venue that serves food at tables. It's a catch 22 situation because without the food, the venues couldn't cover costs. I really miss The Great Club where eating and listening was separated. I've nothing against people going out and having fun, but when I go to specifically see a band, I don't want loud conversations happening around me. That's just me.
are they still alive
i Remember the sports at the 3CR concerts at Collingwood town hall ,and also JJ Zep and the falcons with Wilbar Wild on sax
The grand days of Australian live music. We didn't know how good we had it.
XTC supported Talking Heads at the Beacon Theatre New York on New Year's Eve 1978 and earlier the same year at the Paradiso in Amsterdam. And almost certainly on other occasions as well.
That's good to know. Thanks for the info. I'd love to have been at one of those shows. Suppose I should be thankful that I saw them both separately. Thanks !!
@@Peter_LiveMusic I found an image of both bands' members sitting together but can't post it here. Is there somewhere you'd like me to post it?
@@riccurnow8127 Thanks for the info. I think i've found the photo you're referring to. I've added an 'edit' to my description and put a link there. I really should have done some research myself before hand. Thanks again.
Hey Peter - great to discover your channel, and glad you enjoyed your entree of XTC by XACTO before the feast of Talking Heads by SMS! We hoped it would be a good match with some overlap among fandoms. For this brief opener set we pitched towards the earlier/better known stuff (and shorter songs to squeeze into our allotted 30 min!) but the XACTO repertoire does extend through XTC's career from White Music to Wasp Star. For longer shows like the upcoming night at Gasoline Pony in Marrickville on Sat 15 Feb we'll be doing some deeper dives into the catalogue. Cheers!
Thanks for popping by and thanks for a great opening to a wonderful gig. Yes, I wasn't too sure about what period(s) of XTC's musical career you might favour. I know Scarecrow People prefer their later material (although they do of course, play the early songs too). I really enjoyed the songs you included. I bought "White Music" and "Go 2" when they were first released. And "Drums and Wires" is still my favourite album of theirs. So it was a very pleasant surprise finding you supporting Start Making Sense. Sadly, I can't make the Marrickville gig, but maybe next time you're in Sydney. Hope it all goes well. And thanks again for the comment.
@@Peter_LiveMusic Yes, clashing Mike Stern at the Factory! Damn it. With the tiny stage at Gaspo, these guys might find themselves on the floor!

His Melbourne gig a day or so earlier was the best Frank show I have been to, he was on absolute fire with a small (500) crowd of diehard fans. Looks like it continued to Sydney.
It was a great show but he was struggling a little bit. He posted on social media afterwards: "After the show, Sydney, show 2982. A combination of brutal schedule, jet lag and insane onstage heat made that one of the hardest shows to get through I can remember. Thank you to the crowd for pulling me through, that was tough. Day off tomorrow, thank fuck." Still, you wouldn't really have noticed (except for the sweat irritating his eyes). He always gives it everything he's got - and then some. Very glad I got to see him up close and in a small venue. Thanks for commenting.
I was hoping that you were at these shows Peter. I was there and agree with everything you have written about the shows. Perry took things to a new level with Johnny Barkers imagery for the backdrop, in addition to great lighting and excellent sound quality. The highlight for me was "Sandra" as it is my favourite Perry song and I'd never heard him perform this live personally. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. These were shows not to be missed.
I didn't mention the great sound and lighting. A nice little venue which must hear a lot more classical then contemporary music. Yes, everything came together beautifully. Wonderful show. Did you go to both performances? Perry performed 'Sandra' the second time I saw him, supporting Tim Freedman in Wollongong. You can watch it here if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/KnTrLMexrG8/w-d-xo.html But there are still so many great songs of his which I haven't heard live. I guess I'll be going to his concerts for some time yet. Hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for commenting.
@Peter_LiveMusic Yes, I went to both shows. Same setlist for both. Edmund gave me his set list after the show which was nice of him to do this. I can send you a copy if you like? Deacon Blue are a great live band, not sure what Lorraine’s problem was on this occasion. When she’s good, she’s really good - but when she’s bad she’s awful. Not the best 🙉
Not sure why you're blaming Lorraine when the problem is most obviously my non-professional recording gear and her position right in front of me on one of the two nights. Her vocals sound better on the night when I was on the opposite side of the stage to her. However, sound quality in any venue is always poorest right down the front (which is why I rarely video from there these days). Unfortunately, the sound quality of my other Deacon Blue concert is also not good, once again being too close to the speakers. Maybe third time lucky.
Normally the vocals are seamless and balanced. I’m not ‘blaming’ anyone - but on this occasion Lorraine’s vocals are too prominent and she’s really not at her best. Perhaps she had some sound issues.
Wow you could almost grab Philip's precious mic. But I reckon he wouldn't have appreciated that. Only because he probably would assume you didn't know all the lyrics to his songs planned for this concert. Or..............you probably actually do. In that case, Pure 80s Retro agic!
