    Just a general comment here. When Pierre says drop him a line (meaning email) and he will get back to you, he means it. Pierre helped me find a rather difficult part to source for my 280 SE (W108). Thank you Pierre, I am back on the road again enjoying my classic Mercedes.

    The rack damper does not cause rough idle. The 617 didn't have it for years and the 616 never had it. Suggestion earlier engine owners ADD it is malpractice and does nothing to fix the engines problem.

    It starts shaking when it gets near the urban-type settlement in Segezha Raion, Karelian ASSR, on the White Sea-Baltic Canal? Now that's strange.

    Warm an shaking, check the valve clearance. Mostly the inlet. When the air filter is blowing, you know it. And is exact te same symptom as air in the fuel.

    Pierre thank you for such vital information. My 617 in fact do have such characteristic after an hour drive. Is it possible to give a further explanation how this pin is connected inside the injection pump? I just want to get a clearer picture. Thank you

    My 190D engine shakes anytime the engine is on and its driving me crazy because i love this 190d.

    Love your information Sir, very informative. I currently own 2 n/a 300d's with right at 100k on the clock and very clean and about to tow in 5 more lol. 1 being a 71 220d 4 speed and another 80 SD turbo. I'd like to swap the 4 speed into my 78 300d and possibly a taller rear gear out of the SD. Reason being I drive on a hwy where people typically drive 75 to 80 and my 78 seems to not like anything above 65. Btw both the donor cars are in bad shape from sitting and are without titles. otherwise I would not tear them down for parts cars. Sorry for the so long post. And any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    How about loping or surging only when hot? And not when in gear.. I know that's not much information but I'm trying to track this down.

    Excellent information Mr. Hedary. My 1983 300sd Turbo Diesel has a rough idle on start but smooths out once it warms up. My concern is that my Idle is at 400 but my specs say 600. Will that adjustment on my rack pin bring it up or is it a waste of time ??

    I have a slight shake at idle on my W116 300sd and I can feel the pulse from the IP when I touch the hardlines. All the hardlines have the same pulse rate except the first #1 hardline. The #1 hardlines pulse is in sink with the shake of the engine. Could this be injection pump Delivery valve or sprig? There is no leaks. I changed the fuel injector from cylinder one to cylinder 2 and the slow pulse is still felt in hardline #1..

    My 300dt '83 only shakes a lot after driving long and fast on the highway, when I turn of and stop at the traffic light, I have to put it in neutral to calm it down.
    It's like it's angry and wants to keep going! Weird. And it's not all the time also.

    A clogged fuel pre filter can cause similar symptoms

      yes, and a lot of other serious ones (: the first time i felt a clogged pre filter I was amazed...never happened to me before

    Mine vibrates so I replaced the engine shocks and mounts but it still shakes I will have to look into this.

      @@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753 I know you said not to adjust the old pin but I am tempted to adjust it in a few turns what do you think If the little Spring is worn out wouldn't tightening it up a little bit help.

      The engine shocks are not for vibration and the rack damper pin is not for shaking.

    Does this rack damper bolt apply on old in-line Indirect Bosch IP ?
    My 1992 mercedes w201 190D 2.5 with OM602 naturally aspirated engine has unstable idling ( high idle ) when he get 85 c°temp .

    Thank you for this! My 240D shakes at an idle, particularly while in gear. It is much smoother when cold. When warm, if the AC compressor is on, the shake largely goes away. When it is off, the shake is considerably, and felt in the cabin. I've had it looked at by two Mercedes mechanics. The first said that the diesel pump needs to be rebuilt. The second thinks that the idle is normal for an old diesel, and that I should just live with it. The motor mounts were all replaced with Mercedes mounts a bit over a year ago (

    I have a OM605 in my 1996 E250D, it shakes at idle and I replaced the injector nozzels. The shake did reduce, but it does yet shake at idle. And more importantly, the engine RPM goes up when I turn the air conditioner compressor OFF? Please suggest some remedy! Does my fuel pump have a damper pin?

    My w116 300SD shakes at idle. It does not have the side pin. There's one on top closer to the block. Would it help if I replaced that one?

    Hi,i just Acquired a 1984 300 Turbo diesel, Idles fine when it's cold after warms up it shakes like crazy I notice Rackdampener pin is adjusted all in. Should i get a new one and adjust it.

    I have a 1990 350sdl. It shakes when I turn it on the mornings. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be cold in the morning; I live in California.
    It’ll stop when I’m driving. Just anytime I’m in idle. Or in reverse too. I’m going to replace the motor mounts. But I fear that might not be the solution. Any thoughts?

      2 things:
      -check your overvoltage relay. it might be bad, and causing the car to stall . Also, you may also have an air leak in your fuel system....check the fuel filter, the fuel thermostat and the delivery valve seals on the pump for signs of a fuel leak.
      the rough start is likely air getting into the fuel system , and both issues likely have the same root cause. if you need assistance you can email me at mbownersforlife@bellsouth.net

    Any tips for having trouble getting the new bolt back in? I’ve tried for about 45 min to get it to thread. It did grab once so I know it can, (managed to loosen it out while adjusting) but just cannot get it to bite now.

    Would this problem ever be so severe enough that the motor would stall? (My 300d has a really rough cold idle, that unless I’m riding the pedal, it can stall)

      If the rack pin is installed way too tight it can cause stalling in the cold. By cold I'm assuming sub 45F......to much colder. My 300SD would not keep running cold without slight throttle for a couple minutes under 40F when I got it until I backed the pin adjustment out.

      No. The rack damper does not affect engine smoothness and only late years 617 turbos had it.

    Hi I have W124 250D Om602 non Turbo I have a violent shake and missing in my engine in idle and in drive sounds like jig jig jig jig and loss of power any ideas. Thanks

      well, for one I think you have a dead cylinder. Unscrew each injector line, one by one, and see if there is an effect. if the engine idle gets WORSE then that cylinder is NOT the issue, but if you get to a cylinder and the idle does NOT get worse, then you have located your dead cylinder.
      next, you can check for an issue by spraying soapy water around the injector. does it leak? if you get bubbles, you have a leaking prechamber. If you have no more black smoke when you open the line, you have a bad injector. If there is no diesel when you open the line, then you have a delivery issue from the injection pump.

      Well thanks for your reply I have 1986 W124 diesel and i have check all the hard lines of injector by unscrewing each but all are working its effect the idle speed by lowering down each injector. Well today I have noticed that my last injector return hose is slightly leaking from the pipe in it I change it with new pipe but still slightly leaking. And black smoke is little at idle

      do you have a fuel leak at the top of the injection pump? or is air entering the fuel system?

      I would 1st adjust the Valvess and replace all the fuel filters.

    “Causing u-hu, u-hu, u-hu, u-hu, u-hu, u-hu… it’s really annoying” Highlight annoying. You made it sound funny but is so frustrating. My car has that problem, even after replacing and adjusting that part. Whenever that stupid shake begins, I feel like I want to be swallowed by the seat so that people in other cars don’t notice it.

      sometimes the shake occurs at certain idle speeds, or because of a failing primer pump. the rack damper pin is sometimes not the only cause.
