It's pretty unfair to expect so much from Bruce Lee considering the martial contributions he's already made considering the time in history, his smaller frame, and his legacy. Beating someone significantly larger with proper sparring skill is too much to ask of almost everyone. Proof that if your life revolves around being tougher or more lethal than the other people you don't like will make you miserable. I'm afraid that Anglosphere culture can exacerbate this, which definitely includes Asian American men. I do HEMA but I learnt to manage my expectations and goals so that it's fun and not stressful.
I prefer to remember him as the man who transformed mystic monastery culture into a small business they teach people how to open in universities. he was the Ronald Mcdonald of karate schools all of them. there would be no ATA and no McDojos if he hadn't helped so much to systematize the business of teaching martial arts.
Bruce Lee should be remembered for his philosophical contributions and shining the light on training methods that lack pressure are inferior. Otherwise, that scene in 'once upon a time in Hollywood' is hilarious.

Game of Death was incomplete by the time of Bruce Lees death, they hired stuntmen like Kim Tai Chung, and the then unknown Yuen Biao and Yuen Wah to don stage make up and wigs to play Bruce in order to finish the film and they even still went on to make a sequel Game of Death 2 which featured a cardboard cut out of Bruce and clips from Way of the Dragon in the film to give the illusion that Bruce acted in the film, Donnie Yen and Sammo hung both also made films where they play caricatures inspired by Bruce called Enter the Fat Dragon... I agree with Michael Jai white...still the biggest fan (lots of shirts of him)of Bruce lee and I’m sure a sparring session would be fun..but I think even he would admit (like he did with Muhammad Ali) that Jai White would win.
Bruce Lee actually taught me to "embrace my own potential", even though it was achieved in a significantly different way that anyone would think at the first glance... I used to be BL's die-hard fan in the older days. I even studied Wing Chun for a couple of years (I know, I know...). I realized later, in a humiliating way, that WC was not the most useful fighting tool, when I tried to spar with a guy that did boxing. We didn't spar during WC classes, because - Sensei's words - "you cannot spar in WC, as it is meant to actually hurt someone, therefore sparring is out of question" ("it's for DA STREETZ, hell yeah!"). Yet the funniest thing from these times was that Sensei was telling stories that he went here and there, got into a bar fight, kicked someone's ass... These events happened very often and always "right after we separated" so that none of the students could see it. What a strange coincidence(s)! So anyway, after this famous sparring with the guy that did boxing (not even a boxer), I thought to myself that perhaps it's time to grow up and as a result, I signed out of the "Cult of Bruce Lee" and never had any idols to worship ever since. I got bigger, got a job and got into urban exploration. And you know what? Even when visiting some old hotels, hospitals, bunkers, palaces, often at night and meeting homeless guys, drunks, there were no fights. Never. Ever. Yet real fights "happened" to my ex-Sensei all the time. In public, crowded places. Life can be full of surprises sometimes! Now I know this story sounds like it was made up by some sworn BL hater, even I find it hard to believe and try to deny it (as it is downright embarrasing to me), but that's actually how it was. Unfortunately... But hell, I'm much happier nowadays than back then anyway. And yet BL's movies are still fun!
I think any person who actually practiced for a while knows size matters a great deal. And yes of course so is skill, mindset and endurance. And they know no matter how good you are there is someone who is better than you. And yes that you are objectively better than some other people. Neither one these things makes you a better or worse human being
In Martial Arts size doesn't matter, it only matters in sport competition with rules, when there are no rules, size means nothing, if I poke out your eyeballs and you weigh 300 pounds and me 200 pounds? The fact is, any "street" techniques go both ways. You can groin kick your opponent, sure, but can you execute it well enough to avoid getting clinched up and bitten in the neck? Or better yet for him, why can't he just grab your much lighter and weaker body, pick you up, and throw you head first onto the ground? Agreed. Bruce was a pioneer of modern martial arts, and for his time, he was definitely very profound and I’m sure he could handle his own in a fight, but MJW grew up in a different time period, with better training methods. My view as a JKD instructor: Bruce Lee was someone who was in fact ahead of his time in martial arts, in what regards training methods (sparring, focus mitts and heavy bag training, conditioning, nutrition). In the world of martial arts in the 60's and 70's almost nobody trained with a scientific approach. Also at a technical level, Bruce Lee brought different approach, combining boxing, light footwork and kicking, different from the more static Karate approach. Bruce Lee's approach would have a big influence in American Kickboxing. Also at a philosophical level, the idea that styles are limiting and you should be able to express yourself was also something new. Having said all that above, I don't think that BL was a super man that he would defeat Mike Tyson like some fan boys say. Finally the latest stage of JKD is a great martial art, different from other striking arts and in a way it's still very effective martial art, even with all the evolution in martial arts in the past40 years.
Bruce Lee is like your friend that's a traditional martial artist that messes around with his mma friends, he knew some stuff but his style isn't that much better

Yea for me I have to go with white bc we KNOW what he can really do and see clear clean video footage of what his body is capable of. Bruce lee all we have is low quality footage from 40-50 years ago and a bunch of anecdotes
The general public, and martial artist alike, have elevated Bruce Lee's status to legend. Bruce Lee's intent was to be a better martial artist, not the greatest fighter. He was the first Asian superstar, that challenged tradition not only in the world of martial arts, but in the world of acting, in a time where there were no Asian superstars in the west.
The only time I find it annoying is when people say Bruce was not a major influence on the martial arts world. That's sort of like saying Arnold Schwarzenegger was not an influence on bodybuilding. Sure Ronnie Coleman was bigger... pound for pound, but the name Schwarzenegger will be remembered for the ages. Same as Bruce Lee. They were icons! As far as who could beat who in a fight... Even my traditional Wing Chun instructor Augustine Fong would say... "A bigger stronger skilled man will always beat the smaller man." Thanks for the inspiration Ramsey!!! BooooM!!!
Both skilled, but are they skilled the same way? We saw Bruce perform one inch punch, and seemingly impossible moves. Fact that that his speed and endurance was extraordinary. Michael is big and strong, but we never know if he could keep up with bruce.
What seemingly impossible moves? The one inch punch is not difficult to do. What else? His two finger pushups? I know a lot of little guys that can make that look easy. The less you weigh, the easier it is. What else?

You're a child fighting a child, sums up the useless bully fights in schools. It's really not a final boss or a beat em up videogame. It's just kids letting out steam because of school stress, home stress and personal problems. As for Jai White winning, he has the build and technique to beat anyone as long as it's a fair fight and nothing dirty. Also I'm doing 50 push ups now after this comment.
Size does matter that's why we have weight classes. Michael Jai White would be my favorite in a fight with the little Dragon however I've seen tiny guys knock out bigger men. In a REAL fight I'd pick White. We'll NEVER know because the little Dragon is in paradise. OSU and respect. Incidentally MJW has REAL street credit back home. Osu 🙏🏼🐅🐉
Little guys can knock out bigger unskilled men and even then it's rare, but a significantly bigger skilled man 99.99% of the time will beat the living daylights out of the smaller man.
Bruce Lee is the greatest martial artist. No one is saying that he's not but he's not beating Michael Jai White, he's very fast especially considering his size, he's most likely more powerful (because science) and he's very well experienced in martial arts and fighting. Bruce Lee will forever be the greatest but he's still a human being who can be beaten.
Nobody can beat Bruce Lee. As MJW a striker, what if Bruce Lee tackled him on the ground and choked him as his art Jeet Kune Do consists of Punching, Kicking, Trapping and Grappling.
What are your thoughts on Karate Combat, Ramsey? I've seen a few bouts and it looks super cool, kinda like watching a computer game like Street Fighter II, but then on closer inspection you can see how often the fighters find themselves out of position, and the poor footwork makes it look clumsy. Very interested to hear your thoughts!
"You got out there and trained, right?" *curls his dumbbell in approval in front of the computer* I am my own gym (plus some assorted weights) :P Doing pull exercises as I write this.
Bruce Lee was a pioneer of modern martial arts, he was ahead of his time for sure, definitely talented and a good fighter for his time. MJW however has so much more at his disposal now than Bruce ever had. He’s trained with ufc fighters, and has grown up in a time where we know more about fighting and training, and what works vs what doesn’t. To me, this is like comparing an old classic car to a modern sports car. The classic car is timeless, ahead of it’s time, and back in the day, it was great, but time is the great divider and the classic car just can’t hold up to the new car and what the engineers have and know now that they didn’t 50 years ago or so.
Just gonna say that if we were talking about who would win between stipe miocic vs and henry cejudo there would be no argument about stipe winning that fight because it's a 235lbs man vs a 135lbs man but because it's bruce lee everyone argues.
Not only 100 lbs size difference but lee was 5'8" white is 6'1". Lee would not have the power necessary to actually hurt white without having to really wind up and throw full force , then you have to remember hed be punching upward, hitting a man who is VERY solid and thick built, and can also move very fast and agile for being so large. So lee may have a speed and mobility advantage but theres no way in hell hed be taking white out as easily as people think just based on his Kung Fu movies.
Not saying who would win or thay nonsense but how do you know bruce couldn't hurt jai white when alll the people he sparred with said he hit like a heavyweight . No doubt he would hurt him bad if he hit him.. His side kick and jab was like a heavyweight
Stewie Griffin I'm saying that in a fight speed trumps size proportionately, i.e. A fighter 3x faster against a 2x heavier opponent has a significant advantage. The best strikers train for 2 second fight ending scenarios ((much like a gun fight, who hits who first and decisively with consequential penetration and stopping power)), any longer than 3 seconds and you're waisting your time as a striker ((my opinion)), you should focus on grappling, and Bruce was well above average speed.
It's like asking who would win in a fight (boxing) between Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather jr? The truly stupid among us will insist on discussing the question as if it is a legitimate question.
I do appreciate your take on this Ramsey, at least you are honestly expressing your opinions by applying your knowledge of fighting, so I must respect your comparatives.
I personally have no issue with that. He was an action cinema pioneer. He was a martial arts pioneer. He challenged social attitudes of the time and became a hero to many people. That should be enough for anyone.
@The Crazy Amateur Runner He basically popularized cross training in martial arts, but certainly, despite his legion of weird cultists, did not invent cross training. There were plenty of "mixing styles and seeing what works" before Bruce Lee (e.g. Kajukenbo was founded in 1947 when Bruce Lee was only 6 or 7) Claims around him being the "Grandfather of MMA" though are laughable and pure hyperbole. Dana White is a fanboy who collects samurai swords and vintage action movie posters as much as anything. I mean, Vale Tudo matches were happening in Brazil when Bruce Lee was a little kid, and it took 20 years after Bruce Lee died for the first UFC to happen. And the guys who caused that to happen were the Gracies, who had zero influence or association with Bruce Lee or JKD.
@@iorekby Combat sambo was in USSR before Bruce was even born. Goju ruy is one of the oldest karate styles from Okinawa and it has grappling, takedowns and even ground fighting, with a punches and kicks. So yes, saying "Bruce Lee is a founder ofMM" is kinda over-exaggeration.
@@alexferrana3979 I agree with all your points. IMO if Bruce Lee were alive today, he'd probably be embarrassed by all the delusional fanboy fiction they created around the guy. One thing is for sure: Bruce Lee's "quality" of movement is much more enjoyable to watch on screen than MJW or Jet Li or Donnie Yen or Jackie Chan or Tony Jaa or Van Damme or Segal (lol) or anyone else. Bruce had the one quality I've never beheld in ANY other martial arts movie star: PURE originality! Movement that looks like it owes nothing to any particular "style". When I watch the rest of them, I know I'm looking at "Karate", "Kung Fu", "Aikido", "Wing Chun", etc. But when I watch Bruce move, all I can see is Bruce Lee's PURE self-expression. He's been often imitated but NEVER duplicated! There'll never be another who can match Bruce on THAT!! Just my humble opinion...
Let's be clear about the two. In the 70s, Bruce was the man. From the 90s on up, Mr. White is the shit. Bruce devised "the art of fighting without fighting," i. e., JKD. MR. White studied many styles of martial arts and many black belts. If he's that good, he'd be like Guru Inosanto. I do remember some of Bruce's students talking about actually trying to shut the kid up. Some of those kids were over 225, 215, and so on. Bruce, cleaned the floor with them. Bruce belived point fighting was useless. He's right. Take all the rules out and find out who's the better fighter. My money is e Bruce. I'll tell you why. Did he not mention that JKD will always evolve? There's no set standard for it. JKD isn't the gospel truth. I stand corrected. The basis is Wing Chun Kung Fu. From there, anything else is whatever. My JKD is going to be different than urs. Mr. White's fighting style is different from Bruce's. So who's better? I'd say Bruce. Even if he got, beat, he'd want to learn bc he didn't want to get beat again. Absorb what is useful, discard what is not.
He is bigger. Might be a fight in his favor. But MJW also claimed Shaolin is not real because Shaolin tempels got destroyed and therefore all Shaolin are not real.
@@maddinkn Its like the Ninja's. Or Greek Pankration. The ancient schools and techniques are lost. Any of the modern ones arent really connected to the ancient. The Shaolin Temple in China is a tourist spot.
Surprised this is still coming up. I'm Bruce Lee's size and train in JKD concepts and even I know size matters. I even did light sparring with heavy weights and luckily it was light sparring in a controlled gym because they can always take any of my hits just like me getting hit from say a 12 year old kid. It's not good or bad, it's just physics. Martial arts is about self discovery, not really about fighting in the long run.
Your dissection of the Bruce Lee / JKD cult is also how I sincerely feel about religion. What you say in this video applies to the dismantling of any illusions or irrational thought. However, I value fiction & symbolism & feel that, like religion, they have their place in inspiring others (like celebrities can do). A personal example: When I was young, I idolized Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Van Damme, and, yes, also Bruce Lee, who all represented the sensational & celebrated - and they did inspire me to train, even to this very day! But in idolizing them, I undervalued my "mere" parents for "only" dealing with the mundane, like giving me life, love, food, clothing, shelter, & education. I also undervalued my teachers & friends. Illusions like celebrity idolatry are like young love / lust but turned into a belief system. They are what put Trump in office and what fuel some American voters into thinking the Rock would make a great president despite no proof of being qualified. It’s what makes us overlook scientists who make vaccines. (See how I incorporated recent news into this comment?). Even Bruce Lee himself is recorded on-camera in his Pierre Burton interview saying he resented being called a "superstar" and that being so celebrated was an illusion, saw himself publicly as an actor and would've loved to have been called a "super actor". There really is no distinction between cults & religions except the passage of enough time to be retrospectively logical. And like religion, it's often the followers that become crazed themselves and push the notion of infallibility while the figurehead might not. Being a religious person yourself, I don’t see you as crazed per se but what you say about the JKD cult can also apply directly to criticisms of religious faiths (all, not just yours). But like I said, I understand the value of symbolism & other forms of inspiration, the impacts of which can’t be summated with facts. But I also don’t confuse them with logical thinking & facts. I say this with the utmost respect, Coach Ramsey. This is MY honest expression of self. For the record, I maintain a “live & let live” approach to people of different perspectives, including religion or celebrity fanaticism, provided no harm is being done.
I think what riles people is how lacking in humility Michael Jay Whites comments were (self praise is no praise). I believe Michael Jay White would on probability win. But who is the better martial artist is another thing, who would have the greater skill and understanding of the martial arts in their respective eras? Who was/is the most pioneering in their respective eras? Who had/has the deeper understanding of the arts and their philosophical meaning? We must also factor in as Ramsey points out that Bruce has the handicap of Micheal having 50 odd years of knowledge advantage. To use a chess example I would argue the current world champion Magnus Carlsen would easily beat Bobby Fisher if a prime Bobby Fisher appeared right now and they had a match. However if Magnus was born and raised in Bobby Fishers era my money would be on Fisher. The game has evolved. So the average player from bottom to top will be stronger today than previous generations but that doesn't mean players today are more talented. It's building on the shoulders of giants.
I agree with your perception of MJW. I remember I got into a whole youtube debate with some fan due to mjw's claim that he's a better striker than most ufc fighters. For this one, however, I could see Bruce Lee losing due to facing a knowledgeable opponent that's also bigger than him. Maybe if it was point competition Bruce Lee could win off speed alone, but I'd bet that White would win by knockout.
@@nybxcrotona Yes, if I was betting on a fight between them my money would be on MJW. But who wins in a fight doesn't determine who is the better martial artist. Just like Floyd Mayweather would lose to an average pro heavyweight. But who the better pound for pound boxer is a different matter. Martial arts is so broad, some people say that martial arts true meaning is 'The Martial Way' meaning the martial way to enlightenment. Otherwise we would just call it fighting and not martial arts. I would say that in this sense Bruce is further along the path than MJW.

I'm pretty sure MJW has been training in his field of martial arts longer than Bruce has been alive. Joe Rogan and Eddie bravo claim that MJW kicked a heavy bag so hard that it broke the chain off!! I wasn't there so I don't know. However! It was so memorable to them that they both started laughing about it. Those memories that prompt emotions I tend to believe are true. I just don't understand how Bruce Lee has become the ultimate master fighter that no one can beat. MJW should have known better than saying that. I am sure there are a lot of martial artists who share the same thought, but they keep the thought to themselves to avoid the cultists coming after them.
I haven't seen all of the video yet, so you may cover these points, however, there are some points that need to be addressed: 1. I don't have an issue that he thinks he can beat up Bruce Lee. It's an opinion at the end of the day. 2. People say Bruce Lee never fought anyone need to use that same argument against MJW. 3. MJW was publicly insulted and challenged by Platinum Mike Perry and he didn't step up - he can't be all that confident in his abilities. Perry fights at 170lbs - 60lbs less than MJW 4. People say MJW trains with the World's best fighters - Bruce Lee did as well. Size is obviously a factor, so the question becomes is MJW's size greater than Bruce Lee's skill? It could be, but that's what makes this a fun discussion. Interestingly, almost everyone is picking Floyd Mayweather to beat Logan Paul. Logan Paul weighs around 215lbs + and cuts to 190, whereas Floyd fights at his natural weight of 150lbs. Not many people have an issue with that prediction. Many people would also pick Floyd to beat 50 cent, who is well over 200 lbs. So, it's not out of the ordinary for a smaller guy to beat a bigger guy it's just that their skill level needs to be extreme. It just so happens that Bruce Lee does have an extreme skill level as evidenced by fighters like Chuck Norris.
You know you are leaving out some pretty significant points about Mike Perry challenging MJW ... like maybe include the fact that at the time Mike Perry was 28 years old in the prime of his life MMA fighter and MJW was a 52 year old man. Kind of unfair to basically call him a coward for not accepting a challenge from a man 20 years younger than him don't you think? I think I more shows the cowardice of Mike Perry for challenging a man 20 years his senior. Just saying.
@@dahamet5003 You're also missing the part that MJW said he could beat not only a Mike Perry, but also a bunch of other MMA fighters, even at his age. He even thinks he could've beaten Randy Couture. The point is, Mike Perry called him on his BS, and MJW went missing.

That is if you can take Robert Clouse at his word, the guy who also started the false rumor that Bruce Lee wanted to kill Bob Wall.
Jim Harrison’s fighting style is not flamboyant or spectacular, it’s just simple and deadly! He’s one of the most dangerous men in the world.”

Osu 🙏🏼🐅🐉
Hasn't Ramsey previously given a story about an small old master who kicked his ass repeatedly.

You’re not going to like hearing this, but Bruce Lee was not a good grappler.
@@MichaelHaddad-wf1wnhave you ever done any kind of grappling in any capacity before?
What are your thoughts on Karate Combat, Ramsey? I've seen a few bouts and it looks super cool, kinda like watching a computer game like Street Fighter II, but then on closer inspection you can see how often the fighters find themselves out of position, and the poor footwork makes it look clumsy. Very interested to hear your thoughts!
If you combine boxing with karate you'd have a pretty effective stand up style
Bruce Lee " unless Man has third arm or leg. Fighting is fighting"
Just gonna say that if we were talking about who would win between stipe miocic vs and henry cejudo there would be no argument about stipe winning that fight because it's a 235lbs man vs a 135lbs man but because it's bruce lee everyone argues.
Ya iv never understood that
Not only 100 lbs size difference but lee was 5'8" white is 6'1".
MJW could actually kick Bruce Lee's ass though
I want to see Bruce Lee vs Michael Jai White piloting mechs.
Omg yes 👍 😍 🙌 😭 👏
Size matters. That's the universal truth in our universe.
Speed matters more, ask bullets.
@@mmurmurjohnson2368 so a gun beats all, is that what you're saying
Stewie Griffin I'm saying that in a fight speed trumps size proportionately, i.e. A fighter 3x faster against a 2x heavier opponent has a significant advantage. The best strikers train for 2 second fight ending scenarios ((much like a gun fight, who hits who first and decisively with consequential penetration and stopping power)), any longer than 3 seconds and you're waisting your time as a striker ((my opinion)), you should focus on grappling, and Bruce was well above average speed.
@@mmurmurjohnson2368 I'm saying none of anything matters if you have a gun 😆
It's like asking who would win in a fight (boxing) between Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather jr?
The truly stupid among us will insist on discussing the question as if it is a legitimate question.
I do appreciate your take on this Ramsey, at least you are honestly expressing your opinions by applying your knowledge of fighting, so I must respect your comparatives.
Let's respect him for the contributions he made towards martial arts
I personally have no issue with that. He was an action cinema pioneer. He was a martial arts pioneer. He challenged social attitudes of the time and became a hero to many people.
That should be enough for anyone.
@The Crazy Amateur Runner He basically popularized cross training in martial arts, but certainly, despite his legion of weird cultists, did not invent cross training. There were plenty of "mixing styles and seeing what works" before Bruce Lee (e.g. Kajukenbo was founded in 1947 when Bruce Lee was only 6 or 7)
Claims around him being the "Grandfather of MMA" though are laughable and pure hyperbole.
@BigJohn Hansome same about Anderson Silva.
@@iorekby Combat sambo was in USSR before Bruce was even born.

@@alexferrana3979 I agree with all your points. IMO if Bruce Lee were alive today, he'd probably be embarrassed by all the delusional fanboy fiction they created around the guy. He was a talented performer and action star who changed cinema and was obviously passionate about martial arts. But he wasn't some unbeatable fighter, and the man himself even admitted that (he said Ali would beat him in a fight).
It's his fanboys that created this weird cult around him and talk nonsense which makes me cringe.

You know why there are Chuck Norris jokes and not Bruce Lee jokes? Cause if you said those things about Bruce Lee, people would believe them
That is true
Bruce belived point fighting
was useless.
MJW would also eat up Dan Inosanto, at any age you prefer.
He is bigger. Might be a fight in his favor.
But MJW also claimed Shaolin is not real because Shaolin tempels got destroyed and therefore all Shaolin are not real.
It kind of depends on the way you look at it.
@@cuzz63 what?

Bruce Lee actually has more accolades in cha cha dancing than combat sports competition. Not that there's anything wrong with that of course.
Actually that's very true.
Dancing is good for fighting, works wonders with Loma
Surprised this is still coming up. I'm Bruce Lee's size and train in JKD concepts and even I know size matters. I even did light sparring with heavy weights and luckily it was light sparring in a controlled gym because they can always take any of my hits just like me getting hit from say a 12 year old kid. It's not good or bad, it's just physics. Martial arts is about self discovery, not really about fighting in the long run.
Good to know you know what martial arts is, people seem to not know the difference between martial arts and fighting
Really ,then If MJW win ,I would win against u ,u wouldn't even know me,how weak I am ,how strong I am ,so shut ur disillusioned mouth up,please use your conscience.MJW wouldn't even beat Jackie Chan in his prime,u believe only what u see , believe about what u don see too, like Jesus Christ is forthcoming.....

I just don't understand how Bruce Lee has become the ultimate master fighter that no one can beat. MJW should have known better than saying that. I am sure there are a lot of martial artists who share the same thought, but they keep the thought to themselves to avoid the cultists coming after them.
And that is why you will never know their names.
I haven't seen all of the video yet, so you may cover these points, however, there are some points that need to be addressed:
Perry fights at 170lbs - 60lbs less than MJW
