      and i bet Bruce Lee would defeat u in less than 30 seconds. The Myth of Bruce Lee..haha. BLABLABLA...the thing is that everything tarentino said is wrong and the guy he mentioned that bruce lee was not very nice to american stuntguys said the total oposite but it was no problem for Tarentino to tell another lie about Bruce Lee. lie after lie after lie..U never met him but u think u are allowed to ruin his myth cause why? u cannot prove anything and all u do is speculate on a guy whos dead 4 50 years and cant defend himself. . so u said he fought only garbage guys in his backyards.. so he trained the tournament karate world champions in his backyard and u really think they wouldnt recognize it when bruce lee was just an actor or a jerk?haha common u can do it better than this right? tell more lies the world dont need.. who is next on your list? kobe bryant? wasnt he even a basketballplayer? maybe he wasnt able to dribble the basketball right? he was just a garbage nba player right? cause he played with garbarge basketballplayers in his backyard? right? haha u are the jerk not bruce lee. hes the legend and u are nothing

      Bruce Lee was stealing from not only the Hollywood industry but also from other Martial artists. The guy was caught dead cheating with his wife. Chuck Norris son said that if his dad was not such a nice guy he would have kicked Bruce Lee's ass. The stunt men hated Bruce Lee because they knew that he took advantage of them and they knew they could whoop his lil ass.

    If Bruce Lee wanted to be a fighter, he would have done so. No his passion was martial arts, he studied philosophy in college, and his calling was acting.
    In all of that, he is a tremendous success considering the era in which he lived, the discrimination he faced, and he accomplished so much at 32.
    He changed action movies forever. He created a martial art and composed his martial arts philosophy. He represented the East to the West and vice versa. He inspired millions of people then and for generations.

    Okay we're talking about two different ways of showing a fight scene. Jackie Chan hates working with Western stunt people. He usually works with his own crew.
    Bruce wanted to work in a way that he knew, a more realistic way. And the Western stunt people couldn't or wouldn't adapt.
    I wasn't there but my thought is Tarantino talked to a bunch of people that didn't like Bruce Lee, and I don't think Tarantino likes Bruce Lee. So I doubt he tried to get both sides of the story, because it fit his narrative/his bias. As he said he'd been waiting for years for an opportunity to do this. Obviously he hated Bruce Lee.

      @yokai I think it's probably the work culture between HK stuntmen and US stuntmen. Because HK Kung Fu movies was big during that time, so being able to take hits is probably on the job requirement in HK. I mean look at Jackie Chan, if the boss man JC is breaking his bones for a scene, you probably be willing to put in the same effort when you do a backward somersault into a fake glass table.

    • @kentpaul9165
      @kentpaul9165 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Bruce was a foreign actor working in the USA, it's on him to adapt to the culture of the film industry, not smack around other workers.
      You can't say a single slightly negative thing about him, like he's a mythical god beyond criticism and not a human; just as fallible as anyone else.

    • @romxxii
      @romxxii 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zCopyCatz It's also because HK budgets are smaller, so they had to shoot within their own constraints. IIRC even the way they shoot cuts from one punch to the next is shot in sequence, on the same reel, to cut down on costs. And for bigger set pieces they often have multiple cameras to cover one action sequence, so making full contact was expected. Some of their VFX are even built upon it -- the trick of adding baby powder to a stuntman's clothes so that it would give off a big puff when it got punched? Only possible with the HK style. It's an effect so cheap and efficient, modern Hollywood stuntpeople use it as well.

      Chael's bigger and taller than Bruce and is SUPPOSEDLY a good wrestler. But if we transported a 20-something Chael back in time time to the late 1960s to early 70s, he'd look awful next to Lee. I think Lee beat the crap out of him. No one understood anything, when Lee demonstrated how you choke a giant opponent, as he did against his friend and student, Kareem Abdul Jabar in the GAME OF DEATH in the early 1970s.
      Lee is respected and honored FOR a reason; and it's not all "Hollywood." He really is a direct forerunner to the sport of MMA.
      And he did have multiple skills, in a time when no one else --- not even black belt masters of his days --- knew anything about an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to fighting. Lee was the only person who looked shredded exactly like your typical Top 5 guys today at the UFC. And this was late 1960s to early 70s. Of course, Lee's elite skills back in the 1960s and early 70s are NOT equal to the skills of elite MMA fighters in 2021.
      But I bet Messi would EASILY run in cicles around Maradona and Pele, too, in soccer...
      Anyway, I just watched how a lanky, non-wrestler-specialist Damean Maia wrapping his arms around a young Chael, hoisting him onto the air, and slamming him onto the mat & I thought: wait, isn't Chael supposed to be the wrestler, with Maia merely being a BJJ (not good until AFTER they're on the mat?)

      @@kiabtoomlauj6249 tbh from everything I’d heard and learnt and studied about Bruce. Bruce’s abilities exceed anything in modern MMA, especially his striking. The fact is he could do things most people can’t, even Dan Inosanto has gone on record saying this on film. I don’t think modern MMA guys are doing anything like what Bruce was doing since they are doing totally different things with different mentalities and outlooks towards unarmed combat. One is about self defence in a life threatening situation, the other is sport fighting under rules and regulations, Bruce Lee was utterly obsessed and trained non stop 24/7. He didn’t take time off. No MMA person of today is doing that. I don’t see how people can even compare modern MMA people to him. The things he was doing people don’t do or can’t do, and these absurd comments like how a modern MMA female fighter could beat him are utterly absurd. I honestly think a LOT of people are misinformed and don’t really know anything about what Bruce was training or what he was really about. Primary targets of jun fan jkd are eyes, throat and groin and Bruce trained this way obsessively. Modern MMA and what he was doing just aren’t the same thing.

      I don't think so. Lee was more interested in real fighting and not sport fighting. He sparred and cross trained enough to understand why sport fighting builds the fundamentals needed for real fighting, but the habits you use are different. It is like comparing a 100 meter sprint with a marathon. If you train for 10 or 20 second altercation, you can get really good at stuff that would get you countered to death in an MMA fight. Martial arts have not evolved, sport fighting has.

    “I wasn’t there, so I don’t know for sure” proceeds with “Bruce lee couldn’t fight for lick” . Very strong opinion based on a movie made by Quentin Tarantino based on what he heard from stuntmen from Hollywood who weren’t very fond of Bruce lee. But You’re not a hater tho 🤷‍♂️ …
    The fact that Tarantino felt the “deep need” to make Bruce lee into a comic because he heard hear stories from salty stuntmen about what happened behind the scenes sounds pathetic.
    It was probably true that American stunt men were inferior to Asian stunt men at the time. Hong Kong action movies just had better stuntmen at the time, they did crazier shit for real with disregard to safety (Jackie chan stunt reels after his movies which pointing to the shit they were up to)…
    It’s the fact that Tarantino really had this urge for years to portray Bruce lee in this light that comes off as if his intentions had bad faith. And people see that and clown him for it.
    Bruce lee still is an icon to millions of people all over the world.
    He’s was ahead of his time, pioneered martial arts into a precursor of what is modern day MMA.

      @EcnalKcin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@philo2189 No, that isn't true, and I don't know why you would claim such when it is easily disproven. There is no video footage of him fighting, but even if you dismiss the fact that he was part of a street gang in Hong Kong, it is pretty well documented that he had a fight with someone the Chinese martial artists sent over to challenge him to keep him from opening a martial arts school in the US. There are also multiple eye witness accounts to the time he actually did get into a fight with a stuntman, who challenged him btw, and which he ended quickly by tossing the stuntman into a wall.
      That said the guy was 5'8", most serious fighters would kick his ass, but at the time I doubt anyone in his weight class could have taken him in a fight. I think it was Chuck Norris that said Bruce Lee was pound for pound the strongest man he knew. Bruce Lee was able to hold more than half his own body weight in one hand with his arm fully extended out in front of him. You can see how how ridiculously fit he was if you do a google image search for "Bruce Lee flexing". He was also incredibly fast. He himself admits he knew faster guys, but you can see in some of his films how he can feint, and then strike with the same hand, before the stuntman can react to the feint. Combine that with street fighting experience, traditional martial arts training, an obsession with Muhammad Ali's footwork, training with Gene LeBell, Chuck Norris, and others, and you can see why he was widely regarded as very capable fighter, even though he didn't fight.
      The thing that people miss regularly when claiming Bruce Lee wasn't a fighter, is that there no forum for him to fight in. He was essentially a mixed martial artist, decades before there was an MMA organization. He wasn't a boxer, or even a karate or judo expert. He incorporated those skills into his own style, or lack of style to be more precise, but they didn't match the way he fought. In the classics martial arts world he would be considered a grandmaster, able to draw from a diverse mix of fighting styles and create his own unique style from them. However, that sort of classic view of martial arts was on its way out, and he was seen as more of an upstart than anything else.
      The reality is Bruce Lee probably wouldn't win against a modern MMA fighter, even in his own weight class, because that modern MMA fighter would have the benefits of having an MMA program they could follow from birth. Bruce Lee is highly regarded by most in the MMA world, because he was essentially the catalyst for the creation of what is now MMA. He broke the traditional rules of each martial art having it's own unique style, and said "no, lets use whatever works best, for whatever position or situation we are in". It was his attitude that influenced other martial artists of the time, and from that was born modern MMA. Only people like Chael, who are either ignorant, and/or have an inflated ego disregard Bruce Lee as a fighter and his role in influencing the martial arts world. I mean, as I said in my previous comment, Cheal called Van Damme a Hollywood fake, and Van Damn has a better professional fighting record than Chael does.

    From the book cited by Tarantino, regarding Bruce Lee, stuntmen and the "incident" with Gene LeBell:
    'He had never done elaborate fight choreography on film-his childhood Hong Kong movies were melodramas, not action flicks. Onstage, Bruce dealt with three-dimensional space and an audience viewing from every angle. To sell a punch or kick, he had to land within millimeters of the target, what he called “non-contact gung fu.” But The Green Hornet stuntmen were all veterans of Westerns. “It was a two-dimensional thing where you had the camera over your shoulder,” says Van Williams. “You could stand three feet away from your opponent and swing, and if the guy reacted correctly and the sound effects were right, it looked perfect. Bruce could never get used to working that far apart.” Bruce insisted on close quarters combat. The stuntmen hated it.
    They weren’t fast enough to react to him, and as a result, occasionally got banged up. “They got to the point where they didn’t want to work on that show,” Williams recalls. “They were tired of getting hurt.” “Judo” Gene LeBell, a legendary pro wrestler, world-class judoka, and the stunt coordinator on-set, was assigned the task of calming Bruce down. “Bruce would hit you in ten different spots and as a stuntman you wouldn’t know whether to grab your jaw and say that hurt or your stomach,” says LeBell.
    “We did our best to slow Bruce Lee down because the Western way was the old John Wayne way where you reach from left field, tell a story, and then you hit the man. Bruce liked to throw thirty-seven kicks and twelve punches.” When reasoning didn’t work, LeBell took to joshing Bruce. “In pro wrestling, they call it ‘the swerve.’ It’s how far you can tease and get away with it,” LeBell explains. “I’d tell him he put too much starch in my shirt.” One day as part of the general joking and roughhousing atmosphere on set, the stuntmen egged LeBell into picking “the little guy up.” LeBell yanked Bruce onto his shoulder in a Crouching Nelson hold-upside down with one hand around the back. Then he slowly walked him around the set. “Put me down!” Bruce yelled. “I’m going to kill you!” “I’m not going to let you down.” “Why?” “Because you are going to kill me.”
    Despite the difference in temperament, the two men became friends. “I reckon I teased him so much I eventually got him to loosen up a little,” LeBell says. To Bruce’s credit, he was so obsessed with perfecting his martial arts he put up with the hazing to learn from LeBell. Bruce offered to exchange lessons: kung fu for judo and wrestling. “I showed him some legitimate finishing holds, leg locks, arm locks,” LeBell recalls. “He told me he used one of my holds on Chuck Norris in Way of the Dragon.”'

He should have just said it's a fictional movie and it's his fictional depiction of Bruce... end of discussion. Now saying Bruce Lee couldn't fight a lick, I don't think is really true. I mean you take one instance where other people vouch for the fact he lost a fight, but immediately disregard, and not mention the many other instances where other people say they have seen him fight, and fight very well, is kinda like cherry picking facts just to prove your point. But interaction is needed to feed the algorithm right? It got me...
    Now do I think Bruce lost? Oh yea, that's definitely a possiblity, and it probably happened, even happened on quite a few occasions. Do I think there's a mythos revolving around his legacy?? Sure that too. Believing he was damn near all but unbeatable is incredibly stupid. If that was the case, his philosophy on wing Chun wouldn't have changed. Same goes with the changes his philosophy on martial arts went thru... And he probably wouldn't have created Jeet Kune Do if that was the case. But at the same time there's just as high a possiblity he won just as many actual fights, and was the street fighter he was portrayed to be by many others. Let's not forget street fights are not competition fights in any aspect and people love to think they're similar.
    Today we are overall bigger, stronger, faster, and more trained than previous generations. Size and weight take a huge part in who can win a fight too...more so when fighters are trained and taking a guy with more size, with training, against a much smaller opponent is easy to guess who has the clear advantage in any case. But back then he was most likely one of the most skilled, if not the most skilled within his circle. I repeat, within his circle. The rule of "there's always someone bigger, faster, stronger, and/or better, even luckier, that will come along" still applied back then.

It included the Gracies, Masahiko Kimura, Muhammad Ali, Antonio Inoki etc.. In the East, during this same time Karateka were travelling to Thailand to challenge Thai boxers. Most of this cross style competition took place when when Lee was an unknown immigrant in San Francisco. In the 80's Brazilian Jiujitsu was competing against Luta Livre and western kickboxers were challenging more and more Thai boxers to mixed rules events and then shortly after, no holds barred fighting ala Vale Tudo, UFC, Pancrase etc. were common household words. He had good ideas. When I met Bruce Lee, he had already been a student and martial artist of Gung Fu for about 12 years. They say his highest ambition then was to create a string of martial arts clubs across the U.S. As far as I know, he had never sought out Hollywood; it sought him out, particularly for his skills. A good reference work for those early martial arts years of Bruce Lee is the book, Striking Distance, Bruce Lee and the Dawn of Martial Arts in America, by Charles Russo. Russo quotes Doug Palmer who recounted an incident on a TV show where Bruce was with several masters. One bragged about his internal Chi, and challenged Bruce to hit him in the stomach, saying it was impossible to hurt him. Bruce punched him right on the nose, shocking the guy. Incensed, he "demanded to know what Bruce was doing." Bruce said, "A Gung Fu man must be prepared for the unexpected." This incident shows that Bruce did have a degree of arrogance, and also fearlessness. Prior to the Wong Jack Man fight, Man wanted them to agree to certain rules, but Bruce said there would be no rules. His attitude was, You come over here challenging me to a fight, there aren't going to be any rules.' Later, Man said of the fight, "He wanted to kill me." Bruce Lee was not an empty shell.
    As I mentioned in my interview with Paul Bax, Jimmy Lee told me once that in all the times he had sparred with Bruce, he had only touched him once. Later I thought he must have meant "struck a good blow" or something, because surely he had touched him. But years later on the internet I saw a martial artist saying, "Bruce Lee was untouchable," and wondered then if Jimmy had meant exactly what he said.
    It seems to me that someone who has the physical skills to be a stuntman in Hollywood probably has his own degree of arrogance and pride, and so we have the hubris of the stuntmen in the mix along with that of Bruce Lee, not just that of Bruce Lee, to consider.

    The whole idea that Bruce Lee revolutionized the martial arts world by coming up with this insane thought of learning different stuff is as much nonsense as all the other mythical claims around him. People have always looked into different things. For example, quite a few of the early figureheads of Okinawan Karate were also high ranked Judo black belts. Many old time catch wrestlers were also into boxing. Style vs. style spectacles were already popular in the 20s, such as Motobu Choki's fight with a western boxer. And most importantly, Vale Tudo contests were already regularly taking place in Brazil in the 60s, well before Bruce Lee made his first movie. Lee is not the originator of the MMA idea - Vale Tudo for all intents and purposes was already proto-MMA and was traditionally a hotbed of rivalry between BJJ and Luta Livre.

      Calm down, it's a rhetorical question based on actual "facts". The movie's called Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Shaels referring to Hollywood, we all know what it means to refer to "Hollywood". Bruce had one movie come out in Hollywood after he died in his 30s. Everything about that fight scene goes against what Bruce Lee was, his stance on what works and what doesn't. Now I like the movie, but I also understand that there's nothing factual about it, especially that ending, as much as I'd rather Sharon Tate had survived. Perhaps Brandon was invited back, twice to be in a show with a drunk man who sold cut pieces of water hose as a, fakey tai chi work out tool infomercial, to bury the hatchet. Whatever the case 2 men are dead and can't speak for themselves. Then there's loud mouthed Quentin, who I've heard is quite the asshole, whose had more success in in the mythical movie making business. Nobody's blindly fanboyin out, i guarantee most questioning this are doing so based on years of written accounts, books etc... being contradicted by 1 story heard by a fowl man who makes the occasional good movies and sucks on feet.

      2. Lee became a fitness freak after a debatable fight with Wong Jack Man. anyone who knows fighting knows that if you have great fitness along with explosive speed, you will always be a threat, with or without pro fighting experience.
      not saying he could whoop MMA fighters today, just saying he had legit fighting ability. that guy lived and breathed martial arts and films were just a way to spread that passion. each of his movies incorporated different parts of his philosophy. its true his myth has gotten out of hand, but i think the truth is more complicated and lies somewhere between "he's just an actor" and "he'd kill MMA fighters in the streets".

    I respectfully disagree, there is no proof he treated Stuntmen in that fashion at all and it was such an issue like Mr Tarantino said he would have been replaced, especially in the 60s when racism was rampant, they would have thrown him out without a second look.
    The only time we hear about a Stuntman being "abused" by Bruce was when a Chinese Stuntman challenged Bruce and was schooled. But we have seen an interview with a Stuntman who was "tagged" as Mr Tarantino says, Mr Lee was very repentant and sorry as soon as the director said Cut he checked on him. That man is Jackie Chan.
    The cast of Green Hornet also never brought up any abuse from Mr Lee towards anyone, the only universal complaint was about him moving too "fast" for the stuntmen to react, which is why Judo Gene Lebell was brought in to slow him down.
    I've also found no interview thus far with Mr Lebell where he states anything to the contrary.

    In an interview with Joe Lewis he said that he trained with Bruce Lee and that, "It actually, in a great way, improved my fighting style."
    There's an interview with Mohammed Ali where he praises Bruce Lee as he talks about how he either trained with Bruce Lee or studied his work, and how it help him be a better fighter as well.
    So I think it's a bit dismissive to flat out say that Bruce Lee was a jerk. I think he probably was a bit cocky from time to time, but that he took joy in learning from others and teaching as well in a very meaningful way. Is that fair?

    Quick note from a lifetime Bruce Lee fan: Bruce´s philosophy - which I happen to enjoy just as much as the movies and the whole mystique around the guy - are heavily inspired (some would say 'taken') by the writings of Krishnamurti. Bruce would adapt them to the world of martial arts. You can basically do that with just about anything. I.E, I'm an investor. I could say that ''the good investor is like the water, he flows with the market and keeps on moving forward''. That´s what Bruce did.

    Sonnen doesn't have a clue regarding Lee on the set. History by all the people who were there tells a far different story. Most people really liked Bruce and Bruce was always very professional and classy. A couple crew members behind the scenes indeed didn't like hearing Lee constantly talking about martial arts and philosophy and we're heard mumbling, " He's a loudmouth. He a bullshitter." But those couple guys were just that, a couple guys. There were probably 60 people on those Green Hornet sets. Almost everyone liked Bruce Lee. He was nice, funny, friendly and charismatic, interesting, fun and just a very cool person. Further, contrary to Tarantino's nonsense talk about what happened on the set...and Sonnen agreeing with him, no military guy, stuntman, actor nor anyone, had a fistfight, brawl, challenge fight...with Lee on set. Judo Gene LeBell, a wrestler who loved Bruce, ONCE onset, when Bruce was talking to someone about martial arts and philosophy, suddenly grabbed Bruce from behind and choked him around the neck playfully, then picked him up and started running around the set carrying Lee as a joke. Lee yelled, " OK! OK!!! put me down." Le Bell kept running around and Lee was like, " Alright! Put me down or I'll kill you Gene! ( Bruce joking of course ). LeBell goofing, kept running, carrying him across his shoulder and said, " I can't put you down cause you'll kill me! ". Everybody was laughing and he of course put Bruce down and Bruce thought it was funny too...and probably shook his fist at Gene in a non serious ( " You silly son of a bitch ! " ) type way. And that was it. Lee never had a fight on The Green Hornet set. Sonnen then said Lee was no fighter, couldn't fight a lick. He claims Lee, like some other Hollywood type film action star actors, just sparred around and did martial arts, teaching etc...with a few average losers in his back yard or at his school. Wrong. Lee also sparred with and got the best of undefeated Karate and kickboxing champion Joe Lewis ( a much bigger man than Lee by the way ) which Lewis admitted, noting Lee punched him right in the face a few times. Lee bested Karate champion Chuck Norris in a spar where two witnesses, one an LA off duty cop, noted Lee, by the end of the " friendly " match, left Norris, " red-faced ". Lee in a spar broke Army boxing champion Dan Lee's jaw. The list goes on and on. Lee had tons of street fights in Hong Kong and a handful or maybe a dozen in the USA and never lost. Sonnen should realize Lee won the Interschool Boxing Championships of all the high schools in Hong Kong in 1958. And his final fight was with a much larger, taller, British opponent who was champion the previous year, Gary Elms. So Lee had been a real fighter, even competitive fighter, since he was a teenager. Sonnen quite obviously doesn't do any actual thorough research and is doing exactly what he accuses Lee or whomever else of doing..... bullshitting. Sad he has a platform where great numbers of people will unfortunately blindly believe his and/or Tarantino's false narratives about Bruce Lee.
