For Christ's sake it says right in the back of the Guinness book of world records that Chuck Norris holds all world records the people listed are just the people to get the closest to beating him (in their dreams!) what are they teaching you kids in school these days! Matthew Polly's biography _Bruce Lee, a Life_ puts most of the hagiography and outright BS to rest without diminishing Lee's genuine accomplishments and insights. Polly also makes a persuasive case that Bruce Lee's mysterious at the time death had nothing to do with either cannabis consumption or sensitivity to over the counter medication; rather it was and is the most common cause of non violent death for younger athletes, namely heat exaustion.

      One interesting thing I heard was that apparently he had his sweat glands under his arms removed because he didn't like the look of the sweat on camera on something. Very strange, but some theorize that inability to sweat might have contributed to death by heat stroke.

    • @robertlehnert4148
      @robertlehnert4148 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@seanseanston it was a combination of factors, but that almost certainly played a significant part. Jesse Glover, one of Lee's first students said Bruce's control would grow sloppy when overheated. Hong Kong is a tidal soup, high humidity and frequent heat waves, and Polly found a prior incident where Lee almost passed out. The day of his death, it was a heat wave, Lee had been performing in the morning, so a lot of physical exertion there. After lunch, went tto Betty's (his Mistress) apartment, where presumably they had sex-- more physical exertion. Then an early dinner with Saki-- which the normally alcohol intolerant Lee had discovered he liked and could consume. Then, Lee, for the guests, did a short exhibition of his skills, before deciding to lie down in Betty's non air-conditioned bedroom. So, heat wave, lacking sweat glands, multiple physical exertions, plenty of food, and alcohol on someone already sensitive to heat, topped off by lying still in a stiffling space-- in was all a synergistic combination of factors leading to death as his brain stem swelled, cutting off the impulses that initiate breathing.

He was insanely athletic and I do believe that, had he lived a longer life , he could have become a great fighter in his weight class. That being said, he never fought any noteworthy opponent in his lifetime. That is just reality. Hearsay about streetfights means nothing. The fact that you beat up random people does not mean that you could defeat Tyson or any trained fighter for that matter. Lee should be remembered as a visionary. His philosophy is his contribution to the martial arts. I am making fun of the myth that he was some Uber megafighter str8 outta Mortal Kombat.

    From a physics guy who also loves martial arts: the force of your attack alone only tells you how much you changed the motion of your target in a given amount of time, so it doesn't tell you much about how effective a strike is, only how much you "pushed" your target. PSI is a measure of pressure, or force per area. The pressure of your attack tells you how much force you've packed into just the contact area between you and your target. Pressure is the quantity you want to measure if you want to know how much your attack "hurts".

      In prison I saw a lot of guys talk about how many people they could fight.....until someone with nothing to lose gave them a trip to St. Luke's medical center with a full set of smashed facial bones.
      Kung fu is for kids who have never seen what the real world puts down.
      Its damn sad to say. But all those technical stunts dont work when you are in a headlock getting your neck cranked off your body and someone hammering your face in with very little regard for you getting home safely, petting your dog, kissing youroved ones and going to bed

The next thing you know Lee has disappeared and is next shown hiding in a tree. Lee has somehow jumped straight from the ground, with no preparation, onto an overhanging branch several feet in the air. Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Roger Holmes, Ali, George Foreman are some of the people who got me interested in learning to fight. I am 55 yrs old now and those were just some of the greats of the time when I was young. Everyone has their heroes, but these were some of mine. Giving them superpowers demeans them a bit in my opinion. The training these guys put in was what made them great. along with natural ability is what made them greats among the hundreds that came along in their time.

    I remember seeing an live interview whith Bruce Lee in early 70's. The host asked Bruce if he was to fight World Boxing Champion @ 135 lbs (Roberto Duran) at the time, who would WIN? Bruce humbly said that Duran was a Great Champion, and that Lee (Himself) was a showman/actor ! = Enough Said.

      Think he was nice 👍🏻 to a real Fighter.
      I’m sure he wouldn’t damage the Ego of a champion ( Duran ) !
      This Bruce Lee says to the son’s of Gene Tunney, by a Dinner 🍲 in Hong Kong:
      ( Bruce )
      I would destroy your dad in his prime.
      I have not only hands 🙌 I have my longest weapon, my Side kick.
      Notice: !!!
      He was a heavyweight Champion in Boxing 🥊 !
      Think the main fact is in Boxing ring with boxing rules or a Street Fight without rules !!!
      Later wrote M.Ali in his book or says to write ✍️!
      ( M.Ali )
      In a Boxing Ring, I kill him. In the Street without rules he would kill me.
      I will nothing take from Duran away: He is sure a good champ.
      But Street Fighting is another Level.
      Look former Boxing 🥊 Champions in UFC or mixed martial arts, F. Botha.
      He was not interested to make enemies, think 🤔 he would let ways to put this like Norris in his films 🎥.

    Seriously.
    Bruce Lee was a great performer and educator and martial arts theorist.
    He was way ahead of his time on training and nutrition.
    But his time was FIFTY YEARS AGO. Just look at what the state of MMA was in the 90s, twenty years after he died. If he was teleported forward to today, he'd be nothing unique.

    • @pineapplepizza4016
      @pineapplepizza4016 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's like saying if you teleported the Wright brothers forward to today, they wouldn't be anything unique. Well yea, if you look at it like that then nobody is unique, it's all been done before. But it ignores the pioneers and the contributions they left us that allows us to be where we are now. The fact is Bruce was mixing styles long before anyone else, and his philosophy inspired others to do the same.

    Bruce wasn't the first Chinese instructor to teach non-Chinese students. T.Y. Wong's 1961 book has a photo of him instructing San Francisco police officer Erle Maddox sometime between 1959 and 1960 and there is a picture of Noel O'Brien, a then teenager, in 1961 studying at his San Francisco school. The myth that the 1964 challenge match by Wong Jack Man was predicated upon Bruce's supposed breaking of the "kung fu color line" was debunked by Charles Russo and also by Mathew Polly. (That fight was more about Bruce's on stage criticisms towards traditional training and teaching methods, rather than teaching white students.) Even before their books, however, Robert W. Smith had studied Chinese martial arts in Taiwan when he was stationed there in the 1950's, and William E. Fairburn had studied "Chinese boxing" (they didn't call it "kung fu" in Shanghai in the 1920's) from an instructor named Tsai Tai Tsung in the 1920's. It sounds better to say that "Bruce was challenged by Wong Jack Man, because he fought to teach anyone, regardless or race," rather than to say "Bruce was challenged because he got mad at some hecklers at a demo he did in 1964 during an off-night."

  • @dfstarborn

    I agree in regards to the one inch punch that it's just an illusion. It's more like he's moving half a foot or even a foot at times as he uses the weight of his stance to push the guy back. The chair then allows for drama and nobody is going to allow you to push like that in a fight. A person fighting should naturally go into a defensive stance to make it hard for the person to knock him off balance.
