BTW,the reason you get up these hills a little better than with the 4 Runner is because of the longer wheelbase-not the power. The 4 Runner is as capable as anything you could drive if geared correctly.
If you’re for short term only go ahead upgrade your ram, but keep the 4Runner and make it as your daily driver, and your ram for recreation only so the ram will last longer..
All the negative comments are absolutely ridiculous. I am a 4runner owner and that is initially why I started watching, but now it's more than the 4runner...to me it's more about enjoying the adventures...it's gives me a glimpse of some really beautiful places that I will never be able to see in person. Thank you for sharing your adventures, and keep the great video's coming!!
Just wait til you get it stuck and need 3 other truck to pull it out. Been there myself with a Super Duty, sitting on the frame with the front axle dangling off the other side of the dune.
I like seeing new people come into the full-size platform. It's a growing community. And Ram, Ford, Chevy or Tundra, they're all uniquely capable in their own right.
I was a little hesitant at first but the new truck doesn't really change the feel of the vlogs. I'm happy for you on your new truck it's perfect for Utah. Wish we could fit those things in the Denver area trails. My 4Runner barely fits as it is. Do what makes you happy. Also welcome to the hardshell tent life!
A truck is a truck. You may not realize it, but you’re here for me. It sounds arrogant, but it’s the personality, the story that brings PEOPLE back. If i just had videos of the trucks, everyone would just be MEH
I just got rid of my JKU that I had and picked up a Ram 3500 and I can't say enough on how much better it is. Comfort, power, stability and fuel economy.
Good for you ,full size truck is the way to go , more room inside more carrying capacity and towing plus you don't have to upgrade the drive train enjoy.
Thanks Jason, the change from a 4Runner to a diesel truck was the right diction for you and your family. I thought about the 4Runner too (which I found your channel). But many others talked about the same, the lack of power, the not so great MPG and the 5 speed gear box. To change this, you have to spend extra money, only to feel comfortable with all the extra weight. I think with a truck, you have more options...
Ok, I'll bite and Subscribe now that you have a truck like what I want to build out one day. LoL. I have a 2018 Ram 2500 Laramie MegaCab with the off-road package(hill descent assist, skid plates, locking axles, and the front and rear linked suspension). When I don't need it to tow anymore I really want to rig it out similar to what you're running now. I now the MegaCab is going to be longer and I'll have to plan my trips better, but my passengers have always been comfortable reclining back there and the storage behind the seat is great. Keep making great videos, can't wait to prove my haters(people who think that Cummings is not an off roader)wrong through you. 😊
Hey Jason, been watching you for a few years and always enjoy seeing the fun adventures you go on! The Prospector sure looks to continue that tradition! Keep bringing on those fun adventures!
Look Clarence, a new toy.. can I playyyy? Wow what a difference. I like Toyota’s but I like the change. Live axle, diesel. Love the sound.its heavy but power to weight ratio is more than there.
The 4Runner does feel underpowered but much of that has to do with how it is geared and when it shifts. Drive it in sport shift mode and control your shifting and it’s a very different experience. Let the computer shift for you and yes, it feels like a dog. Also, if you load it down with a couple thousand pounds of mods and a trailer...there’s going to be a negative impact on performance. As for the Dodge, personally I don’t find it interesting. But part of the adventure is trying new things, so I get that.
They’re under powered but its even worse when they get overloaded with silly 200+ lb tents and 800+ lb worth of overbuilt bumpers and pointless over done drawer systems with kitchens and huge refrigerators... how did we all manage to get out there all these years without all this “overland gear” ? Do your rig and your wallet a favor, keep it simple, pict a 5lb $300 tent, strap down the small fridge you dont need a huge one, get a small hybrid bunker to carry your winch instead of these ridiculous steel monstrosities that weigh 300+ lbs and only provide protection to the 1/4 front of a $200 part.
Michael Smith all the way up at 4K, it hits almost like a small turbo its so sudden. But nooooothing below 4K, its a dog. The gearing doesn’t help at all.
I love overlanding in trucks, my old zr2 Sonoma was fun but, under power, bad on gas and when full gear it would sag even with another leaf spring. So I switched to a f250 powerstroke. Love the power on it. It is fantastic with the 4x4 and the locker, however front are manual. I still need to build mine. Welcome to the diesel world. You will see the people hate them, I don't blame them, not everyone can drive 80k vehicles.
@@SwellRunner I'm sure you've continued growing, was mostly making a joke about the comments I've seen from people saying they are unfollowing you and AJ because you don't have the 4Runner or even a Toyota. :-)
It's really apples and oranges. In the USA going car camping (what Jason and others call "overlanding") the Ram is a fine choice. Frankly most minivans would do pretty well too. It's not particularly reliable, but who cares? Will it ever go out of cell signal? Nope. So broken down means a phone call and a tow truck. That's really nothing at all like breaking down in Uganda. I think there's a fairly reasonable market for a full size truck setup for car camping. And if your needs are better served by a car camping in a larger truck - the PW is a pretty solid choice.

You know it's funny, I have a 4Runner too. It was watching channels like this that convinced me NOT to build it. Just not worth it. Yeah they look cool, but too many trade-offs for not that much of an increase in capability. Sweet ride!! What's the difference between yours and ajs? The name on it or is there significant differences? Love it either way and cannot wait to see more
His is an actual serial numbered prospector xl. Mine has most of the same stuff that makes it what it is, but his was actually built by AEV and has all the branding that goes along with it.

Hi Jason, rig is looking awesome, what colour ikamper did you go for? Matt or Gloss and why, I’m looking to buy one but haven’t seen one in the wild, they say the Matt is harder wearing, what’s your thought 🤙🏻 thanks.
I hear ya on the 4Runner power, not as nimble as the 4Runner though offroad. I'm waiting and looking forward to the 2021 Tundra. 3.5 liter Twin Turbo V-6, basically like the Raptor motor.
A bit of advise, don't go too nuts with that go pedal flailing over loose rocks and stuff up hill, with that much torque and those big tires you can spin those axle tubes. CAD is also a tender spot. Truss'm and have the tubes welded. Thuren has a decent kit, Carli probably does too. Then again, I'm just here for the newb carnage that is bound to happen.
@@FOTORNR - damage usually happens from axle hop while under heavy power, manual transmission CTD RAMS especially so, bending can happen at the CAD when bottoming out or hitting a rock. Some of the plug welds from AAM have been known to have poor penetration. Not sure what kind of bump stops AEV puts in as part of their Prospector builds and who know what Exp1 did if anything. (I have a pretty dim view of their operation after trying to deal with them regarding their rear bumper and the latches) The OEM stops are pretty much bricks. Thuren offers Boogies that are a soft, progressive, cellular foam that better controls the last 2.5" of compression. Even with King 3.0 pintops, I can blow through them and the Thuren stops really do work well. And that is on a Power Wagon with much less weight over the front axle. The truss kit itself isn't that expensive, but labor to weld it in isn't trivial and as part of that install the tubes would be fully welded to the pumpkin. Point is, you both have heavy trucks, oversized tires and a lot of power available on tap. Don't let stupidity get the better of you.
4runners don’t lack that much power. I own one and it gets up and moves pretty damn good. 280 hp it better. Of course that isn’t putting a ton of unnecessary weight on it either.
I love these trucks. But I didn’t see anything in this video my standard Holden (Chevrolet) Colorado couldn’t do and it’s completely standard. Maybe the video is deceptive due to angles, but didn’t look like that terrain needed such awesome modifications.
“Doesn’t feel big” ... in the wide open dunes and western desert trails. But I can’t imagine wheeling that thing here in the Northeast. Love the truck though and excited to watch your adventures. 👍
bruh, I tow a concrete pump everyday with a Ram diesel, up an down steep grades, muddy off road job sites , with 1500lbs + of gear in the truck bed also, took a couple years before I had an issue an it wasn't even mechanical was an easy electrical fix with battery, anyways its funny how y'all import reliable guys think you have the only reliable vehicles, if I put that 4runner through the same beatings close to its weights limits same as I put my Ram through it wouldn't last half as long as it does going down off road trails,, trust me it drives as good as it looks and the way guys build their trucks it will last just as long as a 4runner going down offload trails by itself hauling some camping gear
_ghost dancer_ the 4Runner comparison brought up and started because he sell his 4Runner in exchange of ram, but they are in different level, ram can be compared to tundra as both of them are full size truck ( or is it half ton or full ton )... cheers
You really need to upgrade your camera... it's so bad... can't focus!!! other than that, all look good! I'm getting there but what you have on your truck, very very cool!
Man, there sure is a bunch of butt hurt in the comments section from a lot (not all) of the Toyota guys. Talk about some pompous, thin skinned, I'm going to take my "Toy(ota)" and go home whiny biotches. Be happy for the guy for doing something that makes him happy and creates some new content for the channel. I have wheeled, camped/overlanded a Tacoma and now a Wrangler and each was great and unique. The Tacoma was a very good little truck. Very underpowered and pretty good offroad. The reliability wasn't nearly as good as advertised. The Jeep has been way more capable offroad, cheaper to modify and has been more reliable than the Tacoma. I miss having a pickup but the Jeep has been better for what I have used it for. That is my personal experience. I will eventually get another Tacoma as I really like them and believe they are the best small trucks. I liked Jason's 4runner a bunch, dig the Ram, and even watch channels with guys overlanding and wheeling Subarus and all types of other vehicles. Just enjoy his great content, be happy for each other and for the unique tastes and preferences of all of us that wheel a variety of vehicles. Help each other on the trails as your time to be stuck or broken down is coming. It would be boring/communistic if we all had to have the same boring car, equipped the same boring way.
Well said! I actually have the 5th gen 4Runner, and it's okay. I think they're a little overrated. I actually wish I had a JLU Rubicon. The 4Runner is a nice daily driver/ station wagon, but it's not a loff-road vehicle in the same category as a Jeep. I follow all kinds of channels. I started following this one before I got the 4Runner, and I still follow a good half-dozen Jeep channels that I started following when I thought I was going to get a Wrangler. I just enjoy the content and enjoy people getting out and experiencing things and using their vehicles, it doesn't really matter what the vehicle is. The Toyota guys are just so cliquish and have an inferiority complex when it comes to anything else possibly being better.
What do you think horse power is? It's just tq at a given RPM. Maybe you mean bottom end vs top end, but hp and tq are a direct relationship measurement.
Mighty Moto a 0.01 hp motor can generate the same torque as a 1,000 hp motor, just at a much much lower speed. So, to say they are related is not true.
@@tundracamper that's not correct. HP is directly derived by tq at a given RPM. So yeah, two different engines can produce different HP and tq numbers, but they will always be a direct relationship. Look up the formula of how to find HP. all you need is tq and rpm, the rest are constants.
I don't get your point. The Ram has like 900 foot pounds of torque. The 4Runner has like 270 at high RPM. My bone stock 4Runner is frustrating as hell to drive sometimes because of the lack of low-end torque.
Its' not big. People just didn't see many Raptors on East cost in off road situation, as my friend has one, and he has no problem to go anywhere. Raptor is wide as your truck.

Excited to see the change, and the challenges that come with a bigger vehicle. Keep up the good work!
Get use to the diesel crowd they are some of the most inconsiderate people you will meet. Rolling coal tearing up trails and as you saw blasting you will sand on you and your gear.
Ah, man. Bummer. You were my 4Runner, adventure chasing, inspiration. Now I'm going to have to chase it somewhere else; good luck with the prospect, brother.
You know it's funny, I have a 4Runner too. It was watching channels like this that convinced me NOT to build it. Just not worth it. Yeah they look cool, but too many trade-offs for not that much of an increase in capability.
I follow the channel because I enjoy the content, but what I mostly follow is Jeep channels because I like to see vehicles actually doing challenging trails.
Now it's ready for Black Bear Pass and similar trails like it... The so much power should make it more better than the Runner, no? ;)
Can it even do black bear pass? There are some tight switch backs on that trail that I feel like this big of a truck would have a horrible time with.
@@Fuzzalump Yeah I was just being sarcastic.. lol.
Jason Koertge, I keep coming back for the great content you produce. Keep up the good work, drive and passion. I can tell you are having a blast!
Bound gears on a fairly new looking RAM? Who would have thunk it??
Why did you swap out the FSR tent that was on it in the last video?
You need to get that flat back off the rear diff.
Im guessing you watched the Banks series?
can we get a review of that RTT please =D ?
Coming right up!
Was looking over my fiance's dads ram 2500 this past weekend. Didn't realize they had a solid front axle and coils for the rear! Hows the ride on the highway?
Flipping awesome. 95 mph feels so smooth. I can’t do that in my wife’s 200 series without feeling uncomfortable.
@@SwellRunner kinda seems like the one you have is a better deal.. but I guess I can see the name brand thing..lol still probably over capable and hope the types of videos stay the same as my son and I have watched you since the start.. love the videos and my son recognizes your voice which is awesome and it brings a smile when I ask him if he wants to watch Jason!! Great work and happy holidays!!
But will it fit in your garage?
4runner was more badass
Lol...yeah, sure it was. And a VW bug is more "badass" than a...well, anything. Not happening.
But for real, it was.
@@gazelom
I've seen it...and no, it wasn't. It was a cute little overland rig, but it's not in the same league as this new rig.
@@phattygoodness7347 Good for you. Doesn't change my mind.
@@gazelom looks like the diesel fanboys have arrived.
Looks really bouncy and uncomfortable offroading? Maybe new suspension in future?
New truck, new friends 😂😂😂
Hi Jason, rig is looking awesome, what colour ikamper did you go for? Matt or Gloss and why, I’m looking to buy one but haven’t seen one in the wild, they say the Matt is harder wearing, what’s your thought 🤙🏻 thanks.
Looks like fun. Can't wait to see it on some trails.
Love it !!
I hear ya on the 4Runner power, not as nimble as the 4Runner though offroad. I'm waiting and looking forward to the 2021 Tundra. 3.5 liter Twin Turbo V-6, basically like the Raptor motor.
Love the new truck! Strictly cosmetic, but is there a different front grill you can get? Not feeling the grill but everything else is super nice!
this thing is HUGE! Better keep in the desert w/ tons of empty space.
So did you recently move to Utardia? weren't you in Fl? I have a tundra & FWC, we should get together on a long weekend trip..
LMAO.....MY WIFE SAID IT DON'T FEEL BIG....
Not the Tyrone next door BBC
Love your new truck and love your videos. I recently went from and Land Rover LR3 to a 1/2 ton GMC and loving it. So I am enjoying watching your 2500!
The new Tundra TRD Pro should have the Matte Army Green color like that Dodge..Not the shinny green color it has now.
Man a nice V8 with a mid/long travel would be killing it out there and ripping it. Things are big and dope but slow.
Nothing modding the turbos can't fix. Those things could make way more power than a V8 could reliably
Does your camera have auto exposure? Also longer vids please!
Good point!
Good to know. How exactly would that happen?
Thats what happens when you get a big boy engine... you actually have power and you can break the tires loose 😂
I didn’t realize the lack of power on 4runners. I can’t even look at my bronco without it breaking traction 😂
4runners don’t lack that much power. I own one and it gets up and moves pretty damn good. 280 hp it better. Of course that isn’t putting a ton of unnecessary weight on it either.
I have one, it's really frustrating because they make next to no low end torque. You got to run them up past 4K to get any power.
David Morin being from Massachusetts originally I couldn’t agree more! But now that I love out west that really isn’t much of a big rig👌🏽
@@vanlifeish5465 I'm envious of all that wide open wheeling you guys have. :)
You're going to like it until it breaks down unlike the 4runner. All jokes aside it looks badass
bruh, I tow a concrete pump everyday with a Ram diesel, up an down steep grades, muddy off road job sites , with 1500lbs + of gear in the truck bed also, took a couple years before I had an issue an it wasn't even mechanical was an easy electrical fix with battery, anyways its funny how y'all import reliable guys think you have the only reliable vehicles, if I put that 4runner through the same beatings close to its weights limits same as I put my Ram through it wouldn't last half as long as it does going down off road trails,, trust me it drives as good as it looks and the way guys build their trucks it will last just as long as a 4runner going down offload trails by itself hauling some camping gear
@@concretejungle77 even as a big time toyota fanboy, lemme tell ya, these new rams got me thinking. also, i need some diesel in my life.
Yes!!!!
_ghost dancer_ the 4Runner comparison brought up and started because he sell his 4Runner in exchange of ram, but they are in different level, ram can be compared to tundra as both of them are full size truck ( or is it half ton or full ton )... cheers
@@SwellRunner sure we need more POLLUTION IN OUR AIR!
I wish you luck with the def system. don't want that acting up on you way out in the middle of nowhere.
Good looking rigs.
Yup pretty much sold on getting a PXL. just need to put the money together.
Finally!!!
Now he needs a beard.
Cool video Jason
Does it have power 😜
Sweet looks great 👍🏻 wish it was mine live it up Jason
What’s the gas mileage like in the big V8?
It's not a V8.......
6 cylinder... with 900+ torque.
The way those are outfitted, 15-17. A stock CTD will get 17-20. Also depends on how much idling it does and short trips.
@@donleamon8653 so, better than the 4Runner. LOL.
I was a victim of identity theft last week - believe or not, my credit rating went up --haha
Yes!
I am happy for you, but bro, that is a ranch truck for towing the cattle to auction. Haha. Not for non-desert trails.
Pro tip- hammering on a Diesel engine before it fully warmed up is basically the worst thing you can do to it
Over 100k easy right there.
I wonder how expedition one feels selling you their sema build only to have you call it a AEV prospector XL for the likes and views 🤣
Nice rig
Confirmation bias
Heck our Land Rovers have been more reliable and fun to own than our Toyota’s we’ve had.
I'm conflicted.
Power doesn’t get you up hill, torque does. Power gets you up hill faster.
Michael Smith so then you agree the initial statement was not correct? That was my point.
Its' not big. People just didn't see many Raptors on East cost in off road situation, as my friend has one, and he has no problem to go anywhere. Raptor is wide as your truck.
Jason show us the tent set up via video please - as a 2019 RAM owner I’m considering something similar - thx and great videos. I subbed
