One of the things that always amazes me about Geoff's low notes is that he's always completely understandable even when he's in deep chest or subharmonics. A lot of basses tend to get "muddy" at the bottom of their ranges, so it's hard to understand what they're singing, but I never have that problem with Geoff - every word comes through clearly.
He calls it the "Grizzly Lullaby". He sang like that in Till Then as well. Till Then was performed by the Milles Brothers in 1948 about a soldier going off to war and asking his sweetheart to wait for him to return.
You do know that the "other singers' are still Geoff, I presume. He layers his voice to make the harmonies. He also does any background music so he will be adding those thudding sounds. To hear him going high and low in one, live, there is an old live recording of VoicePlay doing Elvira. And one of his top patrons, Huldra Draco, made a short video suggesting that Geoff is an alien. :) Which captures some of his highest and lowest notes.
They are manifestations of his other personalities. LOL. Yep we know he's layering his voice. He's not only musically talented; he's electronically talented, too!
@@weaintraisedrightpodcast It used to be Layne (in VoicePLay) who did all the editing for them - he's a genius - but with having his Pattycake Productions to do as well he asked Geoff to please learn how to do it to ease his burden a bit. And of course, being the nice guy he is, he did. So then he could start doing his own videos, as well. Why stop at one skill when you can have many? :)
Truely beautiful...I am in awe of how talented Geoff is. This cover has brought me to tears more than once. Geoff brings such depth and sadness to this song. Your Faces during this reaction were priceless guys. Great reaction...lol
So, if my little piano app is to be believed, he covers from an F#1 (lowest) to an A4 (highest). Four octaves, from one singer, in one song?! This is why we love Geoff!
I think it was said in a video, that his natural is between F1 and A4. But his deepest note was a B0 (in Valhalla Calling for example) and his highest note a F5 or F#5. If I remember right.
The "growl bass" you were talking about, is actually not growl. It's normal chest voice, he's just doing it very breathy, by pushing a lot of air through. Growl isn't very suitable for sustained singing, just like subharmonics aren't. It's more used for endings that need to be super low, like Tim Foust does when he drops down.
Yet both Geoff and I think Tim Foust have held a note in subharmonic for about 5-10 minutes. Geoff frequently (in Voiceplay during the song, not the ending)
@@embran8486 yep, Geoff has held a sub for 15 seconds, even with a couple of pitch bends during it. He has also done multiple notes in a row at different pitches. But it doesn't substitute proper singing, it just adds some cool moments with low notes. For a few words, or a long note. It won't get used for whole sentences or whole verses.
His other grizzly bear lullaby is his cover of Till Then. It’s all in his low breathy chest voice and it’s one of my favorites he’s ever done! And yes! No subs in this, all low chest voice 🙂
Love how is range is so fully shown hear, starting out with that lion's purr, and pitching up to the sky. (Oh, that wasn't a misspelling, that was a pun.)
Just when I didn't think I could love this song more, here comes Geoff!!!!! Not sure if it's been requested yet, but Avi Kaplan has a newer video for his song "Feel Alight" would love to see your reaction to it.
Thanks for a great reaction. Somehow you guys managed to show appreciation while still being your crazy selves. This is so so beautiful. Heartbreakingly beautiful. Without headphones you cannot hear that low bassline while he’s singing in the higher registers. If I’m listening to it on my phone it is still pretty but loses a lot of impact. By the way, AJ nailed that high note. Virtually indistinguishable from Geoff 😂😂😂. And the new name under his picture🤨. It raises so many questions.
I have never liked this song, until now. Funny thing, my mom does not like Geoff's low voice (she has a thing for Tim) and this is the first time she has stopped and gone.. oh, that is really nice.
His voice is chilling and amazing, this cover comes across as someone that has been hurt before and does not want to go through it again. On a lighter note for a laugh you should check out the Tenacious D rendition of this song they do exact copy of the original video.
Just gorgeous - loved the subtlety of the first half - so somber. Then the second half ran with it. I've heard Geoff described as a big cat that's curled up inside a cello and purring. This one really does have that cat.
I'm not a massive fan of the original, so I'm definitely with y'all that this is better than the original! And if you love the style, definitely check out "Till Then". It's an older song from WWII, and one of my favorites because you know exactly where Kathy was standing at any moment during the filming.
They are manifestations of his other personalities. LOL. Yep we know he's layering his voice. He's not only musically talented; he's electronically talented, too!

@@karenponchak5304 And just so they know - he is Omar's older brother. But that one is one of VoicePlay's most beautiful (but emotional) covers. Highly suggest it!

This cover is a safe warm hug from a grizzly bear, and it's one of my favorite things that's he's ever given us. I'm glad you enjoyed it too!

Geoff is a Renaissance Man in the truest sense. He is always showing how versatile he is.

That reaction was everything. The looks on your faces were priceless. Thanks guys for starting my day off right. 😂
Our pleasure!

The tapping sound might be a kickdrum too. By the way Ogre I'm so proud of you and what you've learned in music terminology. You guys have evolved.
Thank you!
Hehe we are raising them right....😂
Thanks for the reaction! I especially loved watching AJ's reaction to Geoff's multi-octave jump 😂
Haunting and beautiful.

Sad grizzly bear lullaby...🐻🎶 or how to make me keep listening to a song I don't really care for again and again.... until I kinda like it.
Love your reactions. I agree with you guys that his version is better, also makes better sense in my head…
Love your reactions to Geoff!!
I think he added the ocean beachy sounds to link it with the original.
