  • Good evening all. I have one of my absolute favourite Rush songs ready to upload, this is 'Afterimage' from the 'Grace Under Pressure' album. I love everything about this song from the beautiful synths (and PPG wierdness in the middle) to the brilliant drum part and some of Alex Lifesons best guitar playing ever - especially the solo.
    Along with Red Sector A, the idea of a Rush song without bass playing wasn't appealing to me when I first heard Grace Under Pressure so it wasn't one I liked early on, but they have ended up being my 2 favourites from the album and a big reason why I wanted to buy a 3rd Wave when it was released. The 'ethereal choiry' patch(es) that - I assume - came from Geddy's PPG is/are really beautiful and I think the general mood of the synths on this song are perfect for the subject matter.
    My patches for this one are 4 parts across 2 patches - The bass and the choir/pad on one patch and the 'PPG Piano' type sound on a 2nd patch for stabs during the chorus and middle section. The strange vocal sound before the guitar solo is just the sample that we use in my Rush band on this song (thanks to our drummer Andy who does a great job at getting all these sounds and triggered samples isolated). I thought it would make the most sense to just use the sound Rush created rather than trying to re-create something similar on the 3rd Wave.
    Since I tried to record this whole thing in one go and don't really have space for multiple cameras/angles around my synth I layered some clips from the music video on top during the middle section to keep it more interesting. I think Neil Peart's part during the middle section might be my favourite thing he ever wrote and I really love listening to how he builds it up every time. It's a really incredible section of drumming, and always sticks out in my mind when I think about how a creative drum part can create and relieve tension in a piece of music.
    I hope you enjoy my cover of this masterpiece. I suspect it will be one of my favourite pieces of music for my whole life!

    This song is one of those great B-sides of theirs. Always loved the middle section and guitar solo of this song.

    Geddy Lee was/is the most talented musician in the history of the world. He played bass, sang, pedals at the same time, AND he had to come up with all the sound effects, different tones, wrote 98% of Rush's melodies absolutely no one could do what he did.

      I would like to throw two other musicians into that mix for the most talented - a guitarist called 'Alex Lifeson' and a drummer called 'Neil Peart' :D Geddy is a true one off when it comes to the bass part of the musical world, that's for sure

    Incredible talent. I was fixated on your left hand, but every so often I enjoyed what the right hand was doing. Even the keyboard slides. The solo section was my favourite. Thanks for sharing your talents with us. Cheers

      Thanks for watching! I'm limited to pretty simple keyboard parts but I really enjoy playing synths. I often make mistakes on the right hand when the left hand has a busier part, but this take went quite well so I'm pleased with it :) thanks for watching as always

    One of my favorites to play on the drums. I used to play moving pictures and Grace under pressure daily. Awesome keys. Doing my own stuff in my home studio now.

    Great cover. Sounds really close. What made you go with the 3rd Wave instead of VSTs?

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thanks. Luckily the sounds aren't too crazy so I can get close enough. Having more difficulty with Power Windows and Hold Your Fire synth stuff but I'll keep on working on them and see how close I can get. Honestly, I am not really a fan of VST's. They are great for practicality (and obviously a lot cheaper), and in the context of a mix they do a good job, but I really enjoy having an actual instrument in front of me and the concept of the 3rd Wave got me excited enough to bite the bullet and buy one. It's given me many hours of fun already making patches for Rush stuff and just generally playing around with it so I'm happy with my decision. Thanks for watching

    how many PPG Wave clones are going to be sold specifically to knock off bit's of Rush from the era? lol. Good job playing the parts btw

    • @hemibass
      @hemibass  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It was one of the major reasons I got mine. It turns out that the synth can actually do a lot more than just the PPG stuff, but going through the PPG wavetables and trying to make sounds close to those amazing parts from Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows has been very rewarding. I've also started working on some Signals stuff with some more 'Oberheimy' sounds which this thing can do really well too, so it kind of covers all bases!

    @hemibass - As both a big Rush fan and Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave owner, I love these 3 Rush+3rd Wave videos of yours. Well done! And thank you!
    Would you be willing to share or provide any pointers on your 3rd Wave presets for these songs? I'm having a hard time connecting the dots between your videos (or PPG / Rush demo videos like these) and the right PPG wavetables to use in the 3rd Wave.
