    I don't have a tailwheel endorsement myself and never saw the need but I can see where it would be useful in that they are lighter and can get into area's that I wouldn't try in a nosewheel plane. Thank you for your perspective and experience.

    Great video! As a very low time pilot who hasn't flown in 20 years....when I get back into it, it will be tricycle. Even though I want to get into backcountry exploration at some point...if conventional vs. nose gear would actually make a difference at that location, I would have no business trying to land there in either!
    I figure I have a lot of learning to do in a decently outfitted trike before I max out my capabilities!

  • @petermathbraz

    As always, your nice videos. Here from Brazil (I’m not a pilot, just airplane lover) I hear from some that nose wheel (they call “trem de pouso triciclo” in Portuguese) seems to be easier to take off and landing that tail wheel planes ...

    Nose wheel stops faster. Compare the XCub with the NXCub. Difference in flight characteristics, tho. Nose wheel affects yaw rate.

    Another great video. Thank you. I'm curious about prop clearance. I've literally scoured Google to find any kind of recommended prop clearance for a back county plane. The only thing ever said is "more is better". In fact the only hard number for prop clearance comes from the FAA and it has nothing to do with off airport operations. Obviously its a subjective question which no one seems to want to give any kind of hard number. Maybe I could ask you this way - what is the minimum prop clearance you would consider (for yourself) in your 182 (and for the flying you do)?

    • @8literbeater
      @8literbeater 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would it matter for a nose dragger? Anything big enough to hit the prop in any configuration, is big enough to destroy the nose gear.

    nice video larry,, as usual,, thank you very much..
    question: i know you have electric flaps, that in mind, in short field operations. what are your thoughts on introducing flaps after you have started your roll? as opposed to having that drag from the start... might be a video... thank you.

    • @motoadveBackcountry182
      @motoadveBackcountry182  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With manual flaps its easy and efficient, with electric it also works but its a bit far to reach and you loos sight of the strip somehow, so I only do it in wider strips.

    This may be a dumb question but... Could it be possible to have one aircraft with both characteristics? ie; Put a tail wheel on a Tricycle giving you a choice of landings or is the COG different? (I'm not a Pilot, obviously)

    • @gilbertfranklin1537
      @gilbertfranklin1537 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ting - I was wondering the same thing. If they were retractable, the only problem would be the CG, as it is further back on the tail draggers. But a sliding weight could handle that. (I'm not a pilot either)... 😏

    Is there a significant climb rate difference between the 182 and the 170? I would imagine the increased horsepower in the 182 would be something of an advantage.

    • @motoadveBackcountry182
      @motoadveBackcountry182  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, although the 170 takes off shorter, the 182 has better climb rate by 300fpm or so.
