I will never forget being in New York and trying to find a bank that would cash my travellers cheques, I eventually found one and was directed to a cashier booth that was heavily fortified with security screens. I was asked for my passport and when I produced it the teller said Australian hey? so I replied That's right mate and he said "Richie Benaud" shocked to have an American know Richie I took a closer look to notice the teller was an Indian who proceeded to tell me he played against the legend in 1959 for Bank of India v Australia. He couldn't stop telling me what a lovely gentleman Richie was I didn't think I was ever going to get out of that bank!!
One of the best spin bowler ever, not to mention the absolute best commentator of cricket of all time. Very sadly missed. Onya Richie, you were the best.
@@davidlp3019 I agree I use to like when Tony use to say I can't believe and he got him in that excited volume and Australian coverage and theme tune at start watching the highlight from Richie on a cold autumn/winter in the UK
being a cricketer look so unbelievable that cricket is going on but Richie Benuad is no more...cricket will always miss ur voice...love and respect from Pakistan
First heard a cricket summary from him when I was 10 years old. Heard him the folowing year, and his cricket influence just grew on me year after year. A maestro. Thanks for the splendid memories Richie. God Bless. RIP.
I could listen to him all day every day, the voice of cricket and the best commentator there’s ever been. The 2005 ashes wouldn’t have been half what it was without Benaud
So sad and sorry that we shall never hear his cricket commentary again. Watching a cricket match will never be quite the same, No one could ever comment on the game as well as Ritchie Benaud. Let’s hope somebody like him will emerge, To carry on where he left off. Ritchie Benaud loved the game and would have been appalled by last year’s Australian Cricket Team Scandal. Of course, as an Australian, he would support Australia but he always had praise for opponents, And was never afraid to criticize his own country. He regarded the game of cricket as bigger than any one country Or its players..
Richie not only a Legend, Gentleman, good Sportsman, very good Comentator but also a Roll model to every young Cricketers. I remember Sportsmanship Showed by him during Nail biting Series against mighty West Indies led by Sir Frank Worrel in 1960.He will be remembered for ever. Respects to the Great man.
Along with Jim Laker, Richie Benaud's voice was the soundtrack to the summers of my youth. They both knew exactly when to speak and when to let the pictures do the talking. Something that many modern television commentators could learn from.
He was the soundtrack to my young life watching test cricket with Geoffrey Boycott Tony Lewis and Raymond Illingworth et al. The greatest commentator I've ever heard and by all accounts an absolute gentleman. If i could go back in time and meet anybody and have lunch with them, it would be Richie. I miss his voice so badly.
On the 28th on January 2018 - I heard that Channel 9 still used Richie's voice on the Wide World of Sports ending - when I heard that I just paused in silence.
What struck me about Richie were his qualities as a human being and it serves as a lesson to everyone that no matter how famous or skilled you are, what people will be most touched by are those human qualities. In Richie's case, calmness, modesty and gentlemanliness stood out. When he looked me in the eye as a young spectator at the Wanderers stadium in 1976, it left a lasting impression that here is a man who can relate to anyone.
He knew his job inside out and did it so well. He was admired in his time and is remembered after it. What better way for a man to have lived his life. Carpe diem...seize the day For Time will take its pleasure And what is passing on its way Will be tomorrow's treasure!
For Cricket commentaries Richie Benaud is a hard act to follow he and Bill Lawry,Tony Greig,Ian Chappell were a great team, Kerry Packer Certainly got it right when ch9 had the rights to coverage of Cricket in Australia,I still watch the game but I don't have as much love for the game since they have sweepted the Out old team and changed channels but if they only did it gradually I think it would be as successful as it once was but 5 years on I miss Richie Benaud.
There's a lot been said about aussies and some of it not complimentary however this bloke was the fairest and most unbiased I've heard and legend doesn't do him justice... A top bloke I wish I could have shaken his hand

Yep. Never get commentators like them again. Mark Taylor is good but not a pinch on these lads.
