I will never forget being in New York and trying to find a bank that would cash my travellers cheques, I eventually found one and was directed to a cashier booth that was heavily fortified with security screens. I was asked for my passport and when I produced it the teller said Australian hey? so I replied That's right mate and he said "Richie Benaud" shocked to have an American know Richie I took a closer look to notice the teller was an Indian who proceeded to tell me he played against the legend in 1959 for Bank of India v Australia. He couldn't stop telling me what a lovely gentleman Richie was I didn't think I was ever going to get out of that bank!!

So sad and sorry that we shall never hear his cricket commentary again. Watching a cricket match will never be quite the same,
No one could ever comment on the game as well as Ritchie Benaud. Let’s hope somebody like him will emerge,
To carry on where he left off. Ritchie Benaud loved the game and would have been appalled by last year’s Australian
Cricket Team Scandal. Of course, as an Australian, he would support Australia but he always had praise for opponents,
And was never afraid to criticize his own country. He regarded the game of cricket as bigger than any one country
    Or its players..

Along with Jim Laker, Richie Benaud's voice was the soundtrack to the summers of my youth. They both knew exactly when to speak and when to let the pictures do the talking. Something that many modern television commentators could learn from.

What struck me about Richie were his qualities as a human being and it serves as a lesson to everyone that no matter how famous or skilled you are, what people will be most touched by are those human qualities. In Richie's case, calmness, modesty and gentlemanliness stood out. When he looked me in the eye as a young spectator at the Wanderers stadium in 1976, it left a lasting impression that here is a man who can relate to anyone.

For Cricket commentaries Richie Benaud is a hard act to follow he and Bill Lawry,Tony Greig,Ian Chappell were a great team, Kerry Packer Certainly got it right when ch9 had the rights to coverage of Cricket in Australia,I still watch the game but I don't have as much love for the game since they have sweepted the Out old team and changed channels but if they only did it gradually I think it would be as successful as it once was but 5 years on I miss Richie Benaud.
