I envy the lucky people who saw this at the ground live. However I was listening live on TMS and loved Henry Blofelds absolutely hilarious but very passionate cricket commentary when this spell was happening. One of the best passages of cricket ever. On balance, framing Smith as a bit of a flat track bully wasn't totally unreasonable - he had a huge average but not many instances of rearguard or really gritty performances and in that series he really did cash in on the two flat decks while being exposed on the three that favoured English bowlers making his large series average a bit of a false impression. Boycott here is way too harsh though and exposes both silly jingoism and his perennial belief that he was better than anyone else. That has, of course, changed and Smith is a well deserved great of the game

It was as good as every other time I've watched these highlights but I remember watching this live (on TV sadly) and being astonished. My boss at the time was a cricket mad Aussie. He started to get really pissed off with me updating him on the score every time a wicket fell. We were both supposed to be working but we were both more interested in the cricket than work.
