Building Rustic Log Bunkbeds and Spending My First Snowy Night In The New Cabin

- After building this tiny off-grid cabin all summer, I was anxious to get it finished enough for me to sleep in. I would need bunkbeds, a couch, table, rug, decorations, a lamp and I even set out to make my own live-edge window trim! Despite a major snow storm, Norman and I manage to stay warm and dry in the new bunkhouse. Alaska cabin living at its best.

I really appreciate your sparse narration, your obvious humility, your patience and resistance to drama. Especially enjoy the music y’all have made sprinkled in. Birds of a feather! Thanks for making.
looks great, but most importantly Norman (the Dog) is adorable.
This is the first time watching your video and I have to say I LOVED IT ! ! ! TAKE CARE and STAY WARM
I love how Norman loves the loveseat and can totally hold it down for you! What an awesome transformation, those bunks are way cool, the trim is looking so good...I bet it was so cozy...great job you should be SO proud! 🤍
My favorite thing is the window trim. It looks like a picture frame.
The cabin looks amazing!
Brother, you're the best! You helped me become a Bushcrafter! You're my teacher. Thank you. 🤝
I designed a cabin and my boyfriend at the time drew the rough draft. Had his brother, an engineer give his thoughts and approval and we were on our way to build a 25 X 25 foot vaulted ceilings, mahogany floors, rough cut lumbar for stairs to full loft (upper half of cabin.) I was lucky to have my parents on board 4 brothers and all our friends help the process. Raising walls had 30 ppl show up! It was amazing. Brothers and cpl friends sectioned 2 huge areas off on either side for Buffalo farming in early 2002-09. Once built, mom and dad decided to live there. Sold their home and added on another 10 feet for 2nd bdrm & den/mud room with heater. It all worked out very nice. Amish bat & board sided. Beautiful custom windows. I forget the size but big looking out at what you could see of 60 acres! Still have it but now brothers want to sell. I don’t have enough to buy them out and am upset about it. My moms dad owned this plus much more land and mom got 60 acres where we had an annual camp for 20 years which many people came to. Lots of memories there. I’m south now but this is the foothills of Alleghany mts. Where my cabin/ land is located. No stranger to snow! Lots of it! The driveways like a road! Set back about a football field from the main road is my cAbin. Praying I can go there and hopefully take it over sometime soon! Retired and enjoy it! I enjoyed watching yours.
Stay safe & warm.
Love the look inside so far
You do beautiful work.
Bunkhouse looks Excellent
Your music tracks are on point! Great job! 🎵🏁🏁🎵
Wow, your dedication and hard work truly paid off! Building a tiny off-grid cabin is no small feat, and the effort you put into every detail, from bunk beds to live-edge window trim, is impressive. Facing a snowstorm and still managing to stay warm and dry in the new bunkhouse is the epitome of Alaska cabin living at its best. Bravo on creating such a cozy and resilient space!
New cabin looks great !!!
As always, a pleasure to watch you crafting this cabin, interacting with Norman, and the serene winter scenes. Love the soundtrack you and Forest Wilson do. Best wishes for a cozy Holiday. Cheers.🤙
Yeah, with the live edge window trim the bunkhouse rustic look went from great to excellent.
You did a great job.and I like how you clean up as you work.
Everything looks amazing and so rustic yet classy . Definitely a great job making it comfy and the home feels. It's been awesome watching the build . Thank you for taking us along and sharing. Can't wait for the new videos too. Happy holidays and enjoy and be safe stay warm 🎅
When Dad built his cabin, the bunk room had 3 odd sized beds, a long & wide one for me (8'x42" wide), a narrow one for a friend (24"x 8') and dad's (std twin bed). The long beds were several thick layers of foam with a cover he had made. Honestly, it was more comfortable than my bed at home.
Outstanding series. You are a man of many talents.
Right now I wood love that live on my own just get a bit of peace.
👋 from England…. I love the music … and the cabin of course ❤

HELLO SHAWN AND MR. NORMAN. JUST LOVE THE CABIN BUILD. YOU DO SUCH AN AMAZING JOB 😊HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS. 🎄🥰🤶❄️
thought his name is Matt.
I MAY HAVE GOT IT WRONG. THANKS AND MERRY CHRISTMAS🎄👩🏻🦳🥰
Really nice cabin awesome job
You should've butted the mattress boards against the wall on the head side. It will make your bed a bit longer, and the wall will act as a baseboard; however, now, with the gap between the boards and the wall, the pillow and the head tend to sag and fall within that gap, which is less convenient. A longer board butted against the wall will be better, and you could also end up with only one post log as you could use the wall at the head to carry the load as you did on the long side.
Your cabin looks beautiful!
Love your content! So relaxing. ❤
멋집니다
Live edge trim looks excellent 😁
Great job Matt love the live edge trim and that somebody takes the time tovput 45 degree joints on them...bed looks amazing...you're turning into a real craftsman... happy holidays to you and yours.. take care✌️

Great video. Thanks 👍

Wow! Just wow!
A cooler and a Coleman camping stove … and a person could stay cozy in there for days on end only having to exit to use the bathroom. Nice job! Looks amazing!
👍Hope you have lots of good friends to enjoy the cabin
The dog likes the couch better 😂 can’t blame him, great build!

Hi Matt Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 my friend hope your warm safe and well weathering out any storms 😊 Overland Dave UK 🇬🇧
Common you negative folks, he doesn’t say he is living off grid but he’s “living and building adventures in Alaska”.
Agreed. No one says you have to do it the way this guy builds...it's the way he does it. I say 'Bravo' to him. ❤ better than I could do.
Cute
Looks awesome! nice video and Merry Christmas!!!
Merry Christmas
My sleeping bag will fit nicely at 30" wide.
Love your cabin love Shaun James Cabin to
The Guest House looks fantastic !!! You rocked it !!!!
Awesome job!
Great job!!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nice cozy cabin. I'd add a wall light sconce for upper bunk.
Fantastic job. You are very talented and determined
Good job
Well done, from California 😊
Bunkhouse looks Great! But the big cardboard box was a great sled. Big enuf for 2. Have a great holiday.
If you had arranged the bed a little differently you could have had a closet or storage at the end of your bed.😊
Awesome cabin❤❤
Essa cabaninha deve ser pra os hóspedes amigos?...ficou muito linda e aconchegante... parabéns pelo seu capricho!!!❤
I REALLY LIKE that 'live edged' trim. Everyone else who is building or has built their cabins use the plain trim. Yours look so unique. Ohhh I like the rug too! Are you going to do the door trim like this as well?
Hey, you could build a padded footstool roughly 2.5 ft x bed height to use as a "bed extension" for a tall man. The rest of the time a great footrest to have for relaxing on the couch. It would have to have some weight to it so it stayed in place thru the night. Also, I think you need an antler or two. There ya have it; The Great and Powerful Oz has spoken.
If you are looking for some quality wool blankets, a great place is Mac Ausland's Woollen Mills, Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The website doesn't do their blankets justice but the product is quality at a reasonable price. They have been in business for a long time, use old mills that last forever.
👍👍👍
A strip 3.5 inch wide plywood along the inside length of the outside bed frame would eliminate sag questions. 2 nails every 10 inches.
1/2 inch plywood.
Man this is great. I’m a city dweller for life, but it’s always been a huge enjoyable experience for me to get out into the true wilderness. I’m nowhere near your skill level or experience, so I’d probably not do well at all though. Still fun to get to see your true grasp of this type of living however! Very chill channel and video!
I slept on a 26" bunk for nearly 20 yrs in the US Navy. 28 inches is fine. Our mattresses were only 2" thick later doubled that and everyone was smacking their heads after that upgrade.
Awesome 👌 Matt great job my friend hope your well 😀 always enjoy your video s🤠💯💯👍👍smashing,Overland Dave UK 🇬🇧
Nice job!
lol at the pup who got on the beds before you!
Ugh little caning is coming along looks great. Now I was thinking a boot brush screwed down by the door would come in handy.
Such a great episode. I enjoy all of the music, but I especially loved the little bit of music when you burned the box! Sounded Scandinavian and with reverse samples or something lol couldn't tell. Delightful video, and I love the blue/purple glow before night sets in, very striking.
Great job inside the guest cabin Matt , looks good.
You should film a Christmas or New years get away for us , that would be cool to watch.
CHEERS! 🍷
Love the cabin! Do you plan to trim the door also? I think that would make it look great also!
He didn't build his own chair.........I'm disappointed!!!!! lol.
Great job brotha the cabin looks super cozy and comfortable,, and Good work with the chainsaw out there...
