I was obsessed with this game and specifically it's multiplayer while it was still active. The reason it died is that it's a niche title, and the learning curve was too high. I played in basically every tournament and actively miss dumping hours of my life into this game. Sadly, I highly doubt that we'll ever get something like this again. All that said, the 7-8 months where this game was still alive was just amazing.
That sounds awesome, I didn't realize their were tournaments and stuff as well that were ran for it. The "sequel" trilogy not making space dog fights a cool part of the those 3 movies hurts the future prospects for another game for sure. Thanks for watching and sharing Debaser, appreciate it!
I have to agree with you. The learning curve was way too high for many players. I tried to get my friends to join me in this game but they only stayed for one match. I stayed in the game for months, it was addictive. If only the skill ceiling was lower and more multi-player games modes introduced this game could have lasted longer
I actually appreciate you knowing the difference between underrated and underappreciated lol. People use those two interchangeably and it irks me, minorly.
I started playing the story again. This time with the Thrustmaster Hotas One. Takes some time to get used to but it feels much better than a standard controller in my opinion. I wish I had it for PlayStation so I could play in VR. That plus the Hotas would be epic.
The VR experience makes it one of my favourite games of all time! A childhood dream come true ❤️ it's just such a shame that the community has fallen through the floor.
They could've vastly increased the lifespan of the game by adding in modes for different eras, and even Legends content. Classic EU fighters like the Imperial Assault Gunboat, Star Viper, Skipray Blastboat, E-Wing, K-Wing, XJ, and StealthX would be a blast to fly. Hell, throwing in the Sun Crusher as a MW2-style match-ending killstreak would be funny as hell.
If there was stuff from the expanded universe PRE Disney I would probably die, that would be awesome. This game is like the one time I wish EA would have given me a reason to give them more money. It was a very one and done focused effort and then they moved on. Seeing there are alot of hungry players and fans out there that would have kept playing if they had kept it fresh. Thanks for watching, love your avatar and name, Kree!!
Disney doesn't like the expanded universe, mostly because they dont have full control over it. Legends was kind of a halfassed compromise that never really set well with the fan base. Main issue i had with squadrons was the control scheme was vary basic mostly focused towards consoles rather then sim players which left all the controls feeling vary janky.

I is absolutley my favorite Star Wars flyer as I was able to play in VR.
Loved this game. I played when it came out on PlayStation with VR. Me and a couple friends all got the VR just so we could play this game. You could also play with people on other consoles. People would have their own squadrons with their friends. I’m only average at games, but you could really find you’re play style in the right vehicle. I concentrated on Y-Wings and U-Wings as New Republic. Tie Fighters and Tie Bombers for Empire. You would jockey for advantage. As your side took advantage you would go on the offensive and go defensive when you lost that advantage. As Covid started to normalize we all had to go back to real life. I went back to check on it and was sad to find I couldn’t find enough people to start a fight.

This game looks amazing. We’ve come a long way in Star Wars flight sims. I used to play this one for Windows PC when I was 6 (29 now) where you put a joystick over the keyboard. It was so awesome. Would love an even better set up nowadays for total immersion.
I still have a dream to somehow build an xwing cockpit IRL and run a game like this in it. Like you see those dudes do with trucking simulators and the hard core airplane Sims. That would be insane. Appreciate you watching and sharing Ty!!!
If you have a Quest 2 and you own a PC version of the game, you can play this game in VR. Just get a basic gaming joystick because the controls are not optimized for VR. Gotta get used to it but honestly, a must if you have a way.

Thanks! I agree, I don't think a Battlefront game is coming any time soon either, which totally sucks. Because BF 2 could have been amazing. I hold out hope that times are changing soon, and companies prioritize quality over post release monetization. A game like battlefront, with all the possibilities, built in starwars fan base, it seems like such a no brainer, but they managed to mess it up twice lol. Thank you kindly for watching!
I personally think that this game is underrated when people talk about Modern Star Wars games , Star Wars squadrons was awesome and the single player story was decent, it could have been better but it was okay for what we got . This game being from the perspective of the pilot in the cockpit was a really smart choice and adds to the immersion . Great video by the way . 😊
Appreciate you watching Snowkid! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! As time goes on it seems to get more underrated, my initial comments and the thumbnail spoke more to launch, and how it was received by critics at that time. There is a lot of fun to have here.
@@JimmyPotatoTV personally I would keep everything the same except for a few things , number 1 have the player kill Lindon James , that would make his sacrifice more powerful . Yeah, I was an avid fan of X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and X=Wing Alliance back in the day. We had big joysticks and a full keyboard of commands to help us manage our ships, and it was great. Squadrons definitely pays homage to the old games, simplifying the gameplay in what I feel are very appropriate ways, and adding some cool new functionality. For example, I like the fact that putting all power to shields or engines won't automatically drain laser power. And the boost when you've got your engines to full is also a very nice touch. But yeah, I agree: the challenge level is really high, even on the easiest difficulty. My biggest complaint is the lack of re-playability with the very short campaign. Zero customizability for most missions is a bummer. And some of the coolest customizations are possible only in multiplayer, but we can't access them because nobody is playing.
@@BigDungeonEnergy1 A coop mode for the story, with the ability to use whatever ship and maybe some more optional side objectives would have gone along way for replayability. The bones for a really great game are here, one that could last a long time, maybe needed a little more time, my guess is EA had a time frame, and the devs had to get in what they could, and wanted to make sure that was a polished multiplayer mode, which from everything I read after making this video, it was. I'm kicking myself for not jumping on this game at launch. Thank you for watching Alessandro, appreciate it!
As someone who is an Ace Combat fan, Star Wars: Squadrons is right up my alley. This would be great in VR. It also has flight stick support which is great. I would have liked to play some missions in planetary atmosphere alongside space battles. Star Wars needs more games like this. Ground battles are fine and all, but some of us want to take the battle to the skies. If there was a War Thunder style Star Wars game, that would be epic. (Edit) If they were to make another one like this, I would like to see the Clone War added to the game. Two different campaigns could be fun. Republic vs CIS and (obviously) Empire vs Rebels.
This game in Virtual reality is easily one of the best experiences EVER. If they made a second one and simplified it’s mechanics slightly; it would surpass all VR games. make it less “arena fighter 5v5” and more “space battle 12v12” My only issue with the game was that the maps don’t really have a guide/method to orientate yourself… I occasionally find myself looking for where the battlefield is. Need a more detailed horizon, as well as buildings or structures, even more space debris.
Planet side combat would have added some life. Bombers could have hit ground targets. Also a bounty hunting 1v1 dog fight game mode where you hunt down harder and harder AI for both sides.
@@JimmyPotatoTV TIE Fighter was probably the best Star Wars game ever made for a good long while, all I want is more of that with multiplayer and a mission editor.
This game really suffered from BF2's disaster launch, and didn't have the content for any longevity. I know there were some tournaments set up for it, but they seem to have fizzled out as well. I didn't get it because I was not happy with the few products being released through EA Star Wars and was/am actively try to avoid buying the games after EA's BF1 (not that many have been released after Disney's purchase of Star Wars).
i wish there was maps like scarif and also maps on the surface in planets also maybe some clone wars era things also they also should have maps on the planet also better character customisation i would like to change the appearance more customisation for the ships that alternate the appearance of the ship
Love Squadrons. IT's the best. All I wanted was an OG Trilogy flight battle game. And I got it. If we had more mission types, some planetary missions. I would kill for a Squadrons 2.
I love this game but i doubt there would a be a resurgence in players, but I hope they'll add something as in depth into Battlefront 2 or the next one, like in the original Battlefront 2 where there were confederate capital ships VS republic capital ships and there were transports to take each side to the other ship to attack it internally, and fighters to have dogfights outside of the ships.
I would really like if Disney would find another publisher that is capable of providing us gamers with a more solo focused space sim like the ones they had in the 90s. I am 20 years old and enjoy online multiplayer games, but when it comes to star wars I really enjoy the single player experience. A space sim like squadrons but with more of a mission style like the old x-wing series would be great! And to make the game even better use a different engine then the frostbite one that is more modding friendly if you are not going to add DLCs anyway🤷♂️
My favorite game back in the day was Rogue Squadron on 64. So playing this was amazing but the only thing I didn't like was your in space the whole time. I wanted to fly thru Beggars Canyon again
This game is amazing. It's too bad the multiplayer died before I could really get into it. It is on the brink of being a flight simulator, and hence a pretty tough learning curve. But SOOOO immersive and amazing. If anyone played X-wing vs Tie fighter or similar titles back in the day, this is the game for you.
I enjoyed the campaign, though at the end of the day, it was mostly just “fly here… wait for something to happen… kill everything… fly here… blow up some things… kill everything…” No idea why people keep saying it is around an 8-10 hr campaign. I beat it in less than 4.
imagine if the "rogue squadron" movie that was suppose to happen actually happened. That was suppose to come out THIS MONTH. They could have had a game release along side, and the world would have been a better place. Top Gun Style game and movie would be so good. Thanks for watching!
I hate how this game doesn't advertise that it supports the Hotas flight stick. I didn't even know it did until I tried it on a whim. You can use a flight stick with this game!
great video jimmy, however, I don't really think Battlefront's debacle is why the game didn't have much fanfare. Could have contributed I suppose, but I just think flight sim games are a very niche market. For example, for me personally, as a HUGE star wars fan, I don't give two flips about any sort of rogue squadron style game. I find flying around in ships boring af lmao. I want lightsabers, force powers, and even "laser" gun pew pews over flying around in ships staring at a pair of hands pushing buttons. But maybe I'm the minority there idk lol
That's a fair point for sure. Flight Sim I'm general is pretty niche, I just figure with the polish the game has, and not being a full price game, I just figured there would be some lasting power there, it's beautiful though, and pretty dang cool if you are into thr space battle stuff. Appreciate you watching Reed! Let me know how the adventures with Bode go later lol
@@JimmyPotatoTV it’s so much $$$ to get the immersion. I’m doing the Seagate express with a ps5 controller right now but being able to turn your head around with your neck and look at your r2 unit in the x wing is too cool!
You can always get multiplayer sessions going on Star Wars games on Xbox live. I belong to an Xbox Live group that constantly puts up weekly play times for Dice's first Battlefront game plus the dlc so you're still able to get all the achievements as well if that is your thing. Personally I still love the first BF better than BF2. It's not tainted by the Disney trilogy so that's a big plus lmao. It does have dlc for Rogue One but the map and extra characters are actually good too. It also has a Death Star multi stage battle in the dlc that never found it's way to BF2 unfortunately.
I just got it for 2 euros, love the game I don't mind that the online multi-player is dead I don't subscribe to Xbox live anymore anyway. now I'm just going to dive in the game and enjoy a few hours of starwars after work
I believe the problem with player base is simply enough ppl don't play flight sim. I tried Microsoft sim 2000 was enough to scare me away from sims for 20 years. I found it had very little to no instructions.
I think that could be a part of it. For me they put in enough options that the game is accessable to a wide range of skill levels. The issue is that they probably didn't market it as such, people hear flight sim and look the other way at times for sure. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
@JimmyPotatoTV no worries man, was playing starlight assault on bf2 for first time in years and remembered thus exists haha.. gonna have to get it now, thank you mate
Played the game when I was younger at a friend's house, but didn't own it, I grew up with n64 rouge squadron, so when I made the video comparing experiences or thoughts, I went with what I knew.
@@JimmyPotatoTV I get it! I just had to say it. Rogue Squadron was fun, but I was always in the X-Wing / TIE Fighter sim camp way more. This is a good video. I came to listen to it because I lost my vision in 2021. Squadrons was the last Star Wars game I got to see and play. Thanks for making a more up to date video about it. I wanted to hear thoughts on it today. It still feels like 2020 / 21 to me in my mind, since that is kind of when things ended for me.
I got this game back when it came out, had been wanting a game like this for YEARS and I loved it, BUT the game was practically devoid of content. Not even in a "live service" kind of way since that always sucks. The game didn't have enough modes, very small selection of ships, few maps, few single player missions... It was just very barebones so people moved on rather quickly, sadly. Both the Rogue Squadron Trilogy and the X-Wing/Tie Fighter games that this game was trying to be a follow up to are way more complete packages by comparison.
Has awesome visuals, super cool idea, great basis to build a game off of and feels cool....BUT it shouldve had a more basic mode and simple 3 axis style flight style like Battlefront 2 from 2005....Sadly the limited ships, the 4 axis movement, shield/weapon/engine balancing that is confusing and not explained, and short basic story mode really made it a let down as someone who just finally played it after getting it for free through a sale for $5
Great game. But for simulation style they went too video gamey with the weapons. Should have just been blasters, torpedoes, and maybe bombs and that's it. Support ships were not neccessary and a waste of a slot in small battles. All that is forgivable if it just would have gotten more love from EA. It needed more maps. Resources it already had they could have used some of the many cool areas in single player. I still love this game.

I'm kicking myself for not jumping on this game at launch. Thank you for watching Alessandro, appreciate it!
Been playing it again still as fun as it was when it came out just had to check
Should have been a series with the clone wars and old republic it absolutely deserved a series
The need the space combat to essentially be this for all Star Wars games moving forward
Been waiting for someone to take this view on this game,I still like it.a lot.
Thanks for watching!
I was thinking about playing this and now I’m definitely going to.
Thanks for the review bro
Thanks for watching it!!
Playing on PC with a HOTAS and flight stick is massively fun.
Having this game.... Annnd the HOTAS flight stick..... PSVR...... Priceless.... I loved it...❤
"It's Overwhemly Satisfying"
this is my fav vr experience and cant believe more starwars fans play it. underappreciated is super accurate
Thanks for watching!! Yah, I gotta get on the vr thing!!
It’s currently for 1.99$ on Xbox!!
More pilots needed! Its a good game for sure!
This game in Virtual reality is easily one of the best experiences EVER. If they made a second one and simplified it’s mechanics slightly; it would surpass all VR games.
make it less “arena fighter 5v5” and more “space battle 12v12”
My only issue with the game was that the maps don’t really have a guide/method to orientate yourself… I occasionally find myself looking for where the battlefield is. Need a more detailed horizon, as well as buildings or structures, even more space debris.
I'm not a big VR guy, but it is THE game I want to try some point. Thanks for watching and sharing!
Planet side combat would have added some life. Bombers could have hit ground targets. Also a bounty hunting 1v1 dog fight game mode where you hunt down harder and harder AI for both sides.
Excellent ideas, definitly would have added some more fun. Lots of potential left on the table. Thanks having a watch!!
is any body able to open the game
it just keeps on closing after launching it
any help is appreciated guys
It's fantastic in VR with the Quest 3, I wish I could play Starfield this way... :)
VR took this game to the next level. i couldn't believe how much of the soul of this game was ripped away switching off VR
Good VR though. A gem in that gaming platform.
What I want to see is a "Squadrons for People Who Grew Up With TIE Fighter" video.
That would be good. I have very fond memories of those games, always wondered how they held up over the years,
@@JimmyPotatoTV TIE Fighter was probably the best Star Wars game ever made for a good long while, all I want is more of that with multiplayer and a mission editor.
Multiplayer and a mission editor would be insanely great. @@Zwei4815
Great game, crazy learning curve for casual gaming.
My game doesn't even start up :/
fix?
This game really suffered from BF2's disaster launch, and didn't have the content for any longevity. I know there were some tournaments set up for it, but they seem to have fizzled out as well. I didn't get it because I was not happy with the few products being released through EA Star Wars and was/am actively try to avoid buying the games after EA's BF1 (not that many have been released after Disney's purchase of Star Wars).
All very fair, It's a damn shame the way it all went down for sure. Thanks for watching Dragorin!
It'as not the only "pilot an xwing or tie fighter available", it's an almost complete remake of X-Wing vs Tie Fighter.
Xwing vs tie fighter isn't available on all platforms currently,
@@JimmyPotatoTV I would hope not, it was released in 1997
I LOVE this game!!
39.99 online currently, Which sites usually have the sale?
Unsure on PC, but on Consoles it seems to go on a lot. Probably google and maybe find a key on sale though? Thanks for watching Jason!
Absolutely loved this game. It’s a shame the multiplayer didn’t get the dedicated numbers it deserved.
i wish there was maps like scarif and also maps on the surface in planets also maybe some clone wars era things also they also should have maps on the planet also better character customisation i would like to change the appearance more customisation for the ships that alternate the appearance of the ship
Nice hat dude! And jersey!
Thanks! Go B's!
That is my hope, we get a proper game combining ground air and space battle. Thanks for watching!
I felt the control was counter intuitive.
I just got the game today and I can't wait to download it
Have fun!!
Cheer~~~an operational unit in an air force consisting of two or more flights of aircraft and the personnel required to fly them.😊
My favorite game back in the day was Rogue Squadron on 64.
So playing this was amazing but the only thing I didn't like was your in space the whole time.
I wanted to fly thru Beggars Canyon again
Right there with you, what I would give for a remake of that Game, all 3 even! Thanks for watching!
This game is still popular with it's regular players. There are still tournaments running. Check out discord
Thats awesome to hear!
I feel like it needed more ships. And more story
100 percent, thanks for watching!!
I enjoyed the campaign, though at the end of the day, it was mostly just “fly here… wait for something to happen… kill everything… fly here… blow up some things… kill everything…”
No idea why people keep saying it is around an 8-10 hr campaign. I beat it in less than 4.
If you ever get VR, come back to this game, TRUST ME.
Only if rogue squadron and this had a sequel released at the same time would be an awesome top gun style game and movie for Star Wars
imagine if the "rogue squadron" movie that was suppose to happen actually happened.
I was so nasty at this game. I miss it 😢
great video jimmy, however, I don't really think Battlefront's debacle is why the game didn't have much fanfare.
@@JimmyPotatoTV EFF BODE!!! lmaooo
This game in VR is off the hook!
I might have to find a way to check that off in 2024, thank you for watching!
That's actually awesome, good to know!
gotta play the vr mode man its incredible
I think its on sale for like 2 USD right now, I paid 2.74 CAD.
Yah, that's a pretty great deal,
I just got it for 2 euros, love the game I don't mind that the online multi-player is dead I don't subscribe to Xbox live anymore anyway. now I'm just going to dive in the game and enjoy a few hours of starwars after work
Tough deal to beat! Enjoy!
Might be why it so cheap right now in playstation store for summer sale like 6bucks or less
6 bucks is worth it just for the story, even if no one is on the multiplayer anymore. If you dig starwars and flight games go for it!
@@JimmyPotatoTV Oh I didn't know not many play multiplayer anymore, but oof
thanks
I believe the problem with player base is simply enough ppl don't play flight sim. I tried Microsoft sim 2000 was enough to scare me away from sims for 20 years. I found it had very little to no instructions.
I think that could be a part of it. For me they put in enough options that the game is accessable to a wide range of skill levels. The issue is that they probably didn't market it as such, people hear flight sim and look the other way at times for sure. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Playing this in vr would be epic but I'd 100% throw up...
All part of the virtual experience!!! Lol you are probably right though, thank u for watching!!
@JimmyPotatoTV no worries man, was playing starlight assault on bf2 for first time in years and remembered thus exists haha.. gonna have to get it now, thank you mate
Multiple Rogue Squadron name drops, but not the actual game series this was based on, in X-Wing / TIE Fighter on PC.
Word 👏🏾
I got this game back when it came out, had been wanting a game like this for YEARS and I loved it, BUT the game was practically devoid of content. Not even in a "live service" kind of way since that always sucks. The game didn't have enough modes, very small selection of ships, few maps, few single player missions... It was just very barebones so people moved on rather quickly, sadly. Both the Rogue Squadron Trilogy and the X-Wing/Tie Fighter games that this game was trying to be a follow up to are way more complete packages by comparison.
Right now on Steam for 1.99€.
I FREAKING LOVE THIS GAME I hate that the que takes 30 min
Has awesome visuals, super cool idea, great basis to build a game off of and feels cool....BUT it shouldve had a more basic mode and simple 3 axis style flight style like Battlefront 2 from 2005....Sadly the limited ships, the 4 axis movement, shield/weapon/engine balancing that is confusing and not explained, and short basic story mode really made it a let down as someone who just finally played it after getting it for free through a sale for $5
This game latest update May 2021 which is such a shame because this game has a lot of potential to be success.
