Mallorca Update: WHAT is really going on NOW?

  • In this Mallorca Update find out what is going on following another week of mixed messages from the world's media.
    Find out what the current situation is like at Palma de Mallorca Airport. Do we still have flood water (I have been asked). Are flights departing and arriving on time? Is there travel chaos? When and how should you book special assistance?
    I also talk about the protest held on a Mallorca beach at the weekend and if contrary to the UK tabloid press, if British holidaymakers are welcome in Mallorca.
    Plus I have a transport request and also a weekly weather forecast for you too.

    Got back from my latest trip to Alcudia last Tuesday, (the day the airport flooded!) Not affected by any protest and the locals I met were all really friendly. The price increase this year seemed quite large, also didn’t appreciate the big increase in beach sunbed especially when there’s reduced facilities with less toilets and no on beach bars/restaurants. It definitely had an effect as there were a lot less people on them.

    • @dianeharkawenko6476

      Are there any toilets at all on the beach. I know there aren't any beach bars til they all get rebuilt. I agree that Alcudia' is beautiful - hope we don't get priced out

      @@dianeharkawenko6476 there is 1 male and 1 female toilet in the lifeguard station. I think there are a couple of other standalone ones but not many and much less than when the beach bars were open. You can pay 1euro to use the toilet at Paraiso Beach hotel/bar.

    Staying in Puerto pollensa for third year in a row. No issues at all from locals. Restaurants very welcoming. Multi hire doing a lot of business with sun loungers etc. Quite a lot of people still on the beach using hired and purchased sun loungers. In fact it is quite nice not having rows of sunbeds. Anyone thinking of cancelling their holiday (although I can only speak gor Puerto Pollensa) don't bother. It's as lovely and laid back as ever. Thank you Alex for giving the truthful side of what's going on.

    What bizarre dilemma. Without the tourist most have no jobs. However, with tourists the locals experience all sorts of marginalization. I do not know if the business owners are up to political intervention or if the politicians see the advantage of limiting investment in tourism.

      In most resorts the locals love the stream of tourists because it brings lots of easy money. That changes in the second week of July, when the stream turns to a flood, and it all gets overwhelming.

    There’s also been many comments of where tourists spend their money and it not going into the local economy but instead to big chains. We work hard and earn our money and it is up us where we spend it. Mallorca has beautiful beaches but not much else. You’re ok if looking out to see. Look behind you and you’ll see masses of concrete buildings.

      You’re right about much of the tourist income going to big multinationals. And about Mallorca’s beaches being beautiful. But you’re totally wrong about whats’s inland! Mallorca has some of the prettiest villages in Spain and the Tramuntana mountain range is a UNESCO World Heritage Area. Next time you visit, go inland a bit and have a look. 😎

Yes,a truly ridiculous long trek both at arrivals and departure ..that’s even before walking to the gate and if unlucky, then still stairs and shuttle bus to aircraft with yet more stairs, I don’t know if a shuttle train would be a viable idea between terminals and after security to exit , they do have them at some US airports. Special assistance at Palma, which I'd booked, they were fantastic with my parents. The press, for whatever reason, are blowing this out of proportion - storming onto beaches! Seems to be the world over sensationalism is worsening. Port de Pollenca was so friendly. Local people do have, rightfully, concerns. The number of hire cars on the island is madness. The house prices unattainable for me if I was a local. We have these concerns in parts of Britain, so protesting to your govt is understandable and there will always be a small group of antagonists. Buses - I travelled outside of rush hour cause why would I want to be rushed for the one week I needn't be and be annoying at the same time. Such a beautiful place with lovely people.

    Arrived back in the UK last Tuesday, spent 10 nights in the Santa Lucia, Palma Nova. We did a lot of sight seeing and eating out, met plenty of locals and I can count on one hand how many grumpy locals we met, it could have been that they were having an off day, which we are all entitled to! The beaches were fairly empty, never saw/heard any anti tourist banter, in fact we had a great/lovely time so much that yesterday we have booked to return next year, different location though as we want to experience more of Majorca (we normally go to Tenerife), cannot wait to return.

    Saarbrucken is in Germany and in an area called the Saarland which is close to the border with France.The Saarland has an interesting history in that it was separate from West Germany after the Second World War and effectively ruled by France but in the 1950's voted to become part of West Germany.

    To be fair, you did interview a lady who felt tourists were not welcome as the beach was empty of sun loungers. There are loads of people reading the news and to be fair you have supported issues against tourists. Hence people will go elsewhere. I am here in Tenerife and saw some news but seen nothing here. It’s just the same as always. But if anyone says I am not welcome, would never come here again and spend my £6000 a year elsewhere.

    • @speak4003
      @speak4003 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      If I'm thinking about the same interview in Port de Pollenca, I was there at the same time, the lady thought the sun lounges weren't put out as a message to tourists to say they weren't welcome. Alex explained that it was bureaucracy from the people who govern the Balearic beaches being slow to give permission. The lady's mind was actually put at rest and she agreed she hadn't had any issues personally. For me, the beaches looked nicer without them, the only minor convenience being toilets which was get-overable. People travel to Formentor to mostly sit on towels for that reason, the beaches look beautiful.

    The lady who commented about the sunbeds in Puerto Palencia clearly hadn’t done any research as it isn’t about anti tourist it’s about the tender process… once Alex explained that she was fine. TBH they could reduce the numbers as they have increased over the years I have been visiting . This was a disappointment when we arrived as PP as it is a vibrant beach area. However you are correct it is all about sustainable tourism and about locals being able to live here and get to work etc. You get the same problems in Devon and Cornwall …tourists please respect where you’re visiting otherwise stay at home.. I have been here 10 days. Everyone has been very welcoming. Everyone has been friendly. Everything has been just as it normally is except no sunbeds but that isn’t the locals or the hotel is it’s the tender process and the government who should manage the tourism and the infrastructure. Thanks Alex for a measured response! We will certainly be back!

    The climate also weather will get more extreme anywhere as the oceans build up more energy by record warming, so more vapour in the atmosphere has to condense(as rain) somewhere⚠

    • @georgehetty7857
      @georgehetty7857 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The climate if anything is less extreme, the increase in global temperatures is uniform and insignificant, more vapour in the atmosphere would cause a decrease in temperatures as cloud is the biggest factor in temperatures around the world .😊

    I can understand the locals anger at the loss of environment and quality of life caused by mass tourism. It’s time to let tour operators and airlines know that Majorca has reached saturation levels and flights have to be restricted by quotas, otherwise where does this all end? I am surprised there is not more demonstrations tbh, it’s locals that have to decide their future not airline executives multi nationals and politicians wanting to line their pockets, can’t you see the uproar in the UK over immigration levels, the situation on the Island’s is much more dire!
