And Mark Larkham, Channel 10 tried to sack him as a commentator and there was a furore from the public. They changed their minds, and won’t do that again. He is a part of Bathurst!!

The German Nurburgring is known as The Green Hell.
When a German DTM (German Touring Car) drive drove at Bathurst, he called it The Blue Hell.
(Because gum trees give off vapours under a hot sun that makes the area look blue - hence The Blue Mountains and The Blue Hell).

Did a few laps on my motorbike at the speed limit of 60 km/h and was surprised at how the TV doesn't do the place justice. Narrow track, blind corners, steep decent, houses along Conrod Straight.

Bathurst is slightly northwest of Sydney NSW, some where 3.5 to 4.00 hours drive from Sydney. You can definitely take a rental car around Mt Panorama. Remember that it is a public road, and speed limits are enforced. If you do come over to see Bathurst, you are best if you come late September. As the race itself is early October.

It is our GREAT RACE, Bathurst has it all a 1000Klm race or 6 Hours the history of an epic course (which is a normal road course during non racing times so locals use it daily) it has the most amazing drivers with one being the KING of the mountain "Peter Brock" who won the race 9 times and who had the tradition of pushing his race car to the limit on the last lap to show it was just as strong at the end as the beginning and has set lap records doing just that. Yes it is in New South Wales a few hours south west of Sydney. It has become a pilgrimage for most Australians and to this day is one of the toughest races in the world. mark larkham has not only race experience there but also doing the commentary for our great race and this is perhaps the best video about it. The other thing to remember is that this is a public road. It was built as a tourist road for the view from the top (hence the name Mt Panorama, tho really its a hill). AND being a public road, it has houses! Have a look at the videos, the gaps in the concrete walls are driveway entrances. 320kph = 200mph. 161 laps, 1000km (621 miles). 2 drivers, they share the driving (one at a time) due to the time. It's about a 6 hour race.

From about 3:15 , (when his eyelids fly up) he's totally IN! hahaha (He's a Real racer this Occasional Outlaw) Who can avoid being drawn into this tense, battle- serious commentary about racing up and down a dare-devil mountain. (But its actually a public road you can drive your rent-a-car around any day. The answer to your airborne question at 12:30 is 'Yes.' Its why its called 'Conrod straight' because your motor will over rev when its airborne (I saw one V8 tacho stuck on 8500RPM when the motor blew) and put a conrod through the block.) Awesome track, driven it 20+ times. You need to drive it to believe it. They hit 200kpm across the top... 60 was enough for me. To add to that, the Bathurst 1000 used to be mixed class racing.
While not being used for racing, there is a 60kph speed limit around the track {to stop idiots like me killing ourselves ...). I set my cruise control on 60 but could only pull 35 going up the cutting .
Fun fact: Murray"s Corner was the fastest 90deg corner in the world before they put in the chase to pull the speeds down. Imagine having 80s group C cars on this before the chase went in... they would have smashed 400 before take-off...

Mount Panorama (Bathurst) is in New South Wales. If you want to drive the entire track you will need to be there about 2 to 3 weeks before the race. Bathurst is classed and a street circuit which means 3 weeks prior to the race they start putting up tyre walls etc. 5 days before the race it is closed to traffic (except local). If people that that is unfair, you should try living in a Adelaide.

Gidday from an Aussie-Kiwi from New Zealand, just "across the ditch" as we call it, (The Tasman Sea) to the South East of Australia. We Kiwis are also fierce car racers and racing fans of all classes who love the big "Touring Car" racing series, with many Kiwis having raced at Bathurst and won this iconic race. (2 young Kiwis won the race just a week ago by a huge margin! Normally the gap is less than 1 second between First and Second place!)
The V8 racing cars, has for decades typically been mainly Ford (blue) against Holden (red) by GM. Sadly, with the demise of the local Australian car market, there are now no more locally made Ford Falcons or Holden Commodores models made. Last year (2022) was the last time at Bathurst for Holden Australia, with the very last of the locally built Holden Commodore race car against the Ford Mustang. Now, it's all "generation 3" US made Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet/GM race cars from the US... Us Kiwis and Aussies will always miss the true Aussie classic series of big V8s. There's many of us car racing fans "down under" who own and drive road sanitised high performance versions of the dozens of V8 racing models made over recent decades. Some are quite collectable now that they are all no longer made. The race is a whole day team effort, and typically the last 40 laps is where the true race tensions really start!
Besides the race against the 28 cars on the track and their various teams with team entries, you have to battle track conditions, the weather storms and all it can throw at you, plus the randomness of a wild animal or two getting onto the track. Every race is a lottery of potential carnage with crashes, mechanical breakdowns, engine failures, brake failures, timing the pit stops for fuel range to the race end, tyre changes and blowouts, brake pad and disc changeouts. It's a finely calculated race in those last 40 odd laps! Edge of the seat stuff until the winner crosses the line at the end of Lap 161. Cheers from a V8 "red team" fan, David.

Hi, it's Michael from Australia here. I grew up in a small Country town about 1 and a half hours from Bathurst. My friend had a Nissan Sports car and we went to Bathurst one day and rode the track. I was 18 at that time. In those days you could drive as fast as you wanted, there were no restrictions then. A bit later you could drive the track but you had to stay on the speed limit.

    Hey mate.
Bathurst is in New South Wales about 3 hours west of Sydney, you travel through the famous Blue Mountains to get here.
If you come to Bathurst you can drive around the track any day of the week as it is a residential road with lookouts ect up top, a goldfields museum on it, and a museum down the bottom, it even has a hotel built on it.
I heard you say you like looking for gold as well, if you’re in Bathurst there is a town called Sofala about 45 minutes drive away which is well known for gold hunting, and near there an old historic gold mining town called Hill End which is even better known for it, there is an old famous road from Bathurst to Hill End called The Bridle Track with a lot of camping spots where people go looking for gold as well, and there is still plenty of gold around it’s just a matter of having the luck with finding it.
I hope you get to make your trip over.

Neverr forget that Australia is a massive country. Size of America massive.
Bathurst is in New South Wales and is far north of Melbourne which is in Victoria. Maybe about 14 hour drive between with no stops. Lots of winding roads and hills and terrible traffic. Especially on regional roads during peak and holiday times. The entire population lives around the central desert in the middle of the country. Bathurst is in the nice mountainous forrested area's of New South Wales. If you can get to a good elevation and look out, it looks like beautiful rolling hills and the size is deceptive.

Bathurst is West of Sydney (closest city).
Queensland is great for prospecting for Gold (so is outback NSW).
Get a 4x4 and take a drive around our amazing country you will love it!
You can drive around Mt. Panorama most days in street cars (I think most kids have been around the track a few times on a coach while on school excursions) haha it is great.
P.s. When they say "mountains" in Australia it is really like a hill compared to the rest of the world, as Australia has the oldest mountain ranges in the world (they have eroded down to what they are today - which is why you will see so many amazing "gorges" in the outback.

There's nothing like camping on the mountain for Bathurst. It's an absolute hoot! You'd love it! Hire a car in Sydney and drive to Bathurst. Good gold panning there too. Make sure you get the required permit and know where you can prospect first though. There are strict regulations on gold prospecting in Australia, and be aware that each state has different regulations too! Also keep in mind that a lot of creeks/rivers can dry up in Summer, so make sure it's a time when there's water in them!

Conrod Straight, going straight down the mountain mean the cars get up to 300kph really quickly. It gets its name because back in 1939 in the first race Frank Kleinig's Hudson threw its con-rod. Apparently the con-rod had had enough and wanted to go home and destroyed the engine in the process. 6 of the 7 car racing deaths on the circuit happened on the straight including 1967 Formula 1 World Champion, Denny Hulme, who suffered a heart attack at top speed.
Hell Corner got its name because in the early days there was a tree on the inside of the corner and motorcycles rounding the corner would have their helmets just inches from the tree. In addition to 7 car racing deaths, there were 11 motorcycle racing deaths before the circuit was declared too dangerous for bikes to race.
Griffin's Bend gets its name from the man who had the vision to build a race track here. He was the mayor of Bathurst, and people said he was crazy to build the track. When people walk the track and discover just how steep parts of it are they tend to agree.
Mount Panorama is now the last remaining of the old-time dangerous and difficult street circuits that hasn't been neutered by safety regulations. Yes there have been safety changes over the years, but on a mountainside there is only so much room for a road, and so the fun bits remain.
