      Hi there! It may easier to first start with my previous video on how to make a mask out of a compound path here:
      th-cam.com/video/KHl2oxCB5pg/w-d-xo.html.
      For a border mask, once you outline the font of your word, you'll need to make the letters a compound path in order to have all letters act as one mask on an image.
      In short, you'll do the following: 1) type out your word, 2) copy that, 3) add a thick stroke for a border, 4) outline fonts, 5) outline the stroke on the font by Object / Path / Outline Stroke, 6) Ungroup if needed, 7) delete out the fill so you're just left with the strokes, 8) select all strokes and make a compound path of your selections by Object / Compound Shape / Make. Now they will act as one object to mask as usual: 9) File / Place / navigate to image, put image to back behind compound path strokes, make mask (Object / Clipping Mask / Make). You'll be left with a mask that has one image through all the letter's borders or strokes! You can even move the image to position the image while it's masked! Move the image, not the letters because the last step if you want the regular letters to be on top of the masked strokes is to: 10) paste the text in front by Edit / Paste in front.
      Hope this helps! Please subscribe!

      @@KimberleyHarper-wr4pr Sure, check it out and give that a try first. Once you have the hang of that (it’s easier with just three steps!), then try one border mask and then try multiple shapes or letters that need to first be a compound path. That way, you’re not trying the most complex mask first! Good luck! Join my list on my website for free sessions! ❤️

    hi there, i have watched both of the videos this and the other mantioned in the beginning of the video, but i either cant create a compound path or outline the stroke of my shape with my group including strokes(of shapes) and text. i want to create a chart, with a gradient as its colour

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! I take it that you want to have different parts of a gradient to fill in across different shapes? If you wanted every shape to have the same gradient (ex: metallic-- like silver to white) you wouldn't need to make them a compound path at all- just fill with a gradient. If you have a rainbow gradient for example and you wanted the first shape to be red and then fade to orange in another shape and fade to yellow, etc. then you would need to make the shapes a compound path first. TRY THIS: make your chart shapes (no stroke, just fill), select the multiple shapes and make a compound path by OBJECT/COMPOUND PATH/MAKE, then fill with the gradient. (There are many from which to choose under WINDOW/SWATCH LIBRARY/GRADIENTS.

    • @burgees7180
      @burgees7180 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@graphicsgrrrl thanks for the reply, sorry I forgot to mention that my charts are supposed to be strokes only, so the fill in transparent, so the problem was to have on the stroke over multiple shapes

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@burgees7180 No problem! I would convert the stroke to a shape and then make the shapes a compound path so the fill can be contiguous. To convert the stroke to a shape, go to OBJECT/PATH/OUTLINE STROKE and then just ungroup the stroke from its fill shape before compounding. Give it a try and let me know if you need me to make a video. I take requests if you subscribe :)

      graphics grrrl hi I still need some help 😩 I’m trying to add a texture in a letter but on the outline (stroke) instead of inside the letter.

    • @graphicsgrrrl
      @graphicsgrrrl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@malikanaomi Ah- try this: after you type out the letter, lock it down, and paste a copy in back (cmnd+B), then give it a thick stroke (very thick; try changing the color so. you can see it behind the letter), once you're happy with the weight, outline the type, then outline the stroke (edit/path/outline stroke), ungroup and then just select the shape that had once been the stroke. You might have to first release the compound path (edit/compound path/release). You can select all the border shapes to make just these a compound shape first so they work as one in order to mask the photo you bring in. (I am assuming you're bringing in a photo for the texture.) If you are not and you've created a pattern, you just select and fill it with the pattern. If I haven't answered your question, feel free to email me the file and what you want to happen: contact at graphicsgrrrl dot com.
