For anyone thinking about ways to implement a deathkiss, I have a couple suggestions. One would be for the party to happen upon one in hibernation. They come across this smooth, pale white orb. After getting close and touching it they can tell that it is a smooth ball of tough, dense flesh. If they are wearing metal armor or a metal ring, they might feel the electricity coming off of the deathkiss humming throughout their metal equipment. The party might mistake it for some sort of weird alien technology or something. Especially if they find that they can easily move it around and take it with them as they travel. However, once it is exposed to damage (perhaps from collateral during a combat encounter or because a party member was feeling stabby), or to heat (from a party member's torch or from the sun outside), it awakens, and immediately goes on the offensive, more than likely getting a surprise round where it can do some serious damage (maybe tentacles two of the nearest, squishiest party members and sucks one's blood if able). Another way is to have a series of victims be found throughout a city. They are found drained of blood, making people think that there is a vampire stalking the streets and so the local lord hires the party to help in hunting it before it can make any spawn. Maybe he has hired some dedicated vampire hunters as well, only for them to die as they were unprepared for what they would actually face. When the party does eventually encounter the deathkiss, this could be a moment to heavily imply that there is a beholder hidden somewhere in the city, serving as its own plot hook in a way.
Beholders are absolutely one of my favorite DnD aberration and possibly favorite monster in general and I'm really glad y'all are doing a year of the Beholder
Wolf Spiders, they carry their babies on their back and if you step on them the babies scatter in all directions. The only way to deal with such an abomination is a 9th level fireball at your feet.
I remeber reading through this guys stat block in Volos. Nasty little fuckers but the lore is super cool. sounds like a cool mini bossor outta nowhere encounter for a lower level game in the underdark. Only thing that seems to make them a tad difficult to implement is that they're super solitary hunters and they're not dreadfully powerful. But I suppose you can do whatever you want with them. I was thinking of one day making a super tough dungeon which would be a Beholder domineering a bunch of Beholderkin

Was curious have you guys a Video on Slaads? Cause honestly that is probably one of my favorite creature types and they are really horrifying that I am a bit scared to run them as a DM and run into them as a player. So if you guys haven't looked at them yet I would suggest it.
