      Question: is a Detroit style locker any better than the ARB? I'm trying to make an educated guess for my '12 Jeep JK. Thanks Paul, your awesome!!!!

    • @MOTO809
      @MOTO809 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bulldozer7656 I wouldn't say they're any better or any worse. It just depends what you want to do with it. The Detroits can be a pain for town and highway driving because you don't have the ability to completely unlock, but if you spend all your time off road you don't have to mess with air compressors and switches and wiring harnesses to lock your diff.
      Personally, I went with an ARB so I can still drive around town as if my truck was still stock and I don't have to deal with chirping tires in the roundabouts and parking lots.

    • @bulldozer7656
      @bulldozer7656 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MOTO809 but isn't that the point of a Detroit? I'm in Michigan and a few times a year go visit family in Colorado Springs, CO for mountain trails... I can go either way, but air locker seams way more expense w/all the other stuff. I just want to do it right.

    • @MOTO809
      @MOTO809 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bulldozer7656 Yeah the Detroit is supposed to remain unlocked until it sees a certain amount of difference in wheel speed. A lot of people seem to like them but I read a lot of negative reviews also. I was in a major dilemma on which to buy last year. I couldn’t find any negative reviews on the ARB other than the price so I bit the bullet and ordered one up.
      My impression is a that Detroit style is best for a local trails rig, or something that goes on a trailer for long trips. The ARB seems, to me, to be better suited for highway driving.
      Either one will perform in the hills, but just my 2 cents, it is SO nice being able to flip a switch to go from a 300 mile road trip to crawling up a rock ledge, then flip it back and hit the interstate knowing it’s unlocked completely. I might be a little bias 😆

      Did you see the unicorn video? A truly COOL upcoming project. It sounds like this will become Paul's future crawler.
      I built a Yota pickup into a rock crawler with some modified and strengthened Toyota parts. My original old 22R works just fine with a newer head and the carb float mod to drive on steep angles. The short block is one of the only original parts that hasnt been modified, replaced or rebuilt. I did add a header and lots of external parts like a heavy duty clutch and a heavy flywheel. That is an awesome mod for crawling!! I can hardly stall it in my 4.0 compound low! Its a real cockroach of a vehicle and it never dies. It looks like its survived a war zone!
      But an FJ pickup is simply in another universe of coolness. All it needs is a grey market Toyota diesel! But a simpler gas guzzling Chevy V8 or even a crazy Cummins diesel 4bt would work incredibly, could make plenty of HP and torque!
      For dedicated and trailered crawlers, diesels or propane conversions make lots of sense. I'm considering propane when I move out of Wackofornia. I really dig Toyota reliability and prefer keeping my engine fairly stock, but I'm not that much of a gearhead. Someday I might find a 3 liter turbo diesel to put in my rig. There's always dreaming, but that's a stock diesel V8 FJ80 or old Unimog for me!

    The 14 bolt is the perfect axle. One day I will have one in the front of my Jeep and rear steer on the one in the back of my Jeep.

    I got a tee-hee-hee moment with slag in the ear. Burns like well? We know for sure. In my world, there is a weld procedure that requires you to back gouge the other side to achieve a complete joint penetration weld. The mess left after gouging reminded me of your pumpkin when you finished surgically removing the old piece. Do like your ingenuity and fab skills.

    You tell him Dad! Never use anything but a closed end / line wrench on pressure fittings lol. That comes from years of snapping.....I mean “experience”. 😂

    Honestly, I was surprised when I read .006 of backlash & I prefer my diffs engaging deep as they can go without bottoming out. A little forward on the ring gear teeth, but you're running some solid engagement... 😏 She's yours and I don't see any problems!
    I find it very funny how one friend builds his dream crawler & his best friend decides to follow suit! Same story everywhere!

    A 15 year project, huh? I have a few of those lying around myself - yours are real cars, though - mine are model cars. I'll get to them some day, given enough time on this earth........ I am always in awe of your fabrication and welding skills - you are so good at it!
