  • In this video we do some hunting/gathering for wild food by catching invasive swamp crayfish and cooking them in a crawfish boil. My kids loved catching them but thought the boil was spicy.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Ruby gulping that tail meat down so fast the heat didn't kick in until she was done. Walking off crying for water. Oh man that was just wonderful. It was wonderful seeing all your kids at least trying things, even if they didn't like it for various reasons. How blessed. Your kids are going to be well prepared for anything to come. Now, did Ms. Woods try some? She was inconspicuously missing. 😂 Thanks so much for sharing this moment with us.

Brings back child hood memories; I used to tie a piece of a hotdog to a hook and attach the hook to a string to go fishing for Crawdads, Crayfish, Crawfish..whatever you call it in your region! lol! They would grab the meat and hook and I would pull them out the hole real quick. My dad said not to eat them unless we were ever starving and that's all we had. Grew up to learn that they are kind of toxic and that's why you need to cook them so thoroughly. I wont eat them, and never feed them to dogs. It was just always fun and sport to see how big of one I could get to come out of that little hole for any kind of meat bait. Once you catch a big one its just a Mud Lobster at that point. Lol!

When I was a kid, I also loved catching crayfish in a nearby pond, just for the sake of catching them! One time, I decided to keep one as a pet. I fed him tropical fish flakes, which he loved. In fact, within a few days, he had shed his skin, because that flake food made him grow so fast. I had to release him back into the pond a week later, though. It turns out, crayfish dirty up their water really fast. I had him in a plastic tub of water, not in an aquarium, and it was just too much work to change the water multiple times a day. If you want to keep them as a pet, you need a really good filtration system.

When I was a teenager, we lived just outside of Chicago, we had a flood lake behind our house in an open field. (There was no like there until heavy rains came and created it. It made an excellent 'Skating Rink' in the winter, as well as a rather shallow lake in the summers. We uses to go there and load up on crawdads and take them home to boil. Loved them little Lobsters!!!

Hello from Louisiana! I enjoyed your video. Many (not everyone) will purge them in salt water before cooking. One hint for peeling: after removing the tail, remove the segment of shell that was closest to the body, grab the exposed meat with your teeth, pinch the tail near the fin to release the meat, and pull the shell away.
You can catch more using crawfish nets that lay flat on the bottom and have a wire frame above.
    Thanks for the videos!

Reminded me of a vacation I had to New Orleans many decades ago. We ate at a BIG restaurant, big enough to seat around 700 people, which sadly has since closed. I chowed down a big plate of crayfish already prepared to eat with a fork. I had a good appetite, and I had never had them before. I loved it!! Perfectly spicy, so I ate everything on my plate, however I don't think I would want to go through trying to prepare it without a professional chef's help.

I've never had crawfish, though I've had lobster, which is one of my favorite seafoods.
