    "There is much talk; and I have listened through rock, and metal, and time. Now I shall talk, and you shall listen."
    The best line in my opinion

    • @BreezeOTM
      @BreezeOTM 4 ปีที่แล้ว +137

      When he said that line it always made me wonder how old it was. I mean it did say it defeated fleets of thousands and consumed an entire galaxy of mind and bone in Halo 3 (assuming it wasn't an over-hype of the war with the "original" Forerunners and actually meant that the flood originated from another galaxy). This is of course before 343 got involved.

      It’s not rotting flesh per say, maybe moldy flesh, since the flood is kind of like a fungus, but it’s more mutated flesh, even dead bodies are brought back to life, in a way.

    • @allbottledup9513
      @allbottledup9513 4 ปีที่แล้ว +125

      Kristofer Mercer It is rotting flesh. I believe it’s in Halo: The Flood where it details how food cells break down your body on a cellular level, snapping bones and popping organs, and it specifically mentions breaking the body down to basically never ending decomposing. This next part is just my thoughts but I believe the Flood decomposes the flesh either to make it easier material to shape and create what it wants, or because he needs all creatures to essentially be the same in order to be compatible so he breaks them down to their raw rotten biomass so he can combine his kills.

    We need more plague/infestation/hive mind type villians that are also cultured individuals. Too often the horror of such creatures is sold on the basis that if you become one of them you lose everything, including all that defined the more artistic/intellectual parts of your society. I personally think it's more horrific to think your individualism is lost but that which robbed you of it takes on your intelligence and creativity as some sort of sick mockery.

It shows that these space zombies are more than just reanimated flesh. Their "mind" is a fully sapient being that speaks as if it has a Ph.D in Classics and can use dangerous enemies, like the Master Chief and the Arbiter, as its (his?) personal cat's-paws. I really feel like the Gravemind was just so underused, especially in Halo 3, only appearing in those walking fever dreams by the Chief.

    The fact that Regret is infected but with his mind still intact means that if the delta Halo fired he would still be around to see that all these centuries of work for his “Great Journey” were all for nothing. And though starvation would soon be a fate for the gravemind to befall, I imagine he’d gain much pleasure from seeing Regret immediately lose all faith in realization.

    "Those who built this place knew what they wrought. DO NOT mistake their intent". You can tell by the anger in Gravemind's voice when he says that that he finds the Covenant's ignorance greatly annoying and aggravating. He may be concerned about his own survival, but he of all people KNOWS what the rings are for. This is compounded by the fact he knows that Master Chief ("and has his mind concluded") knows what the rings do, and the little puppet show he put on was solely for Arbiter's sake ("and is the more deluded"). It angers him that the Covenant and by extension Arbiter would so carelessly and ignorantly active the rings, not knowing their true purpose. This shows somewhat some respect for the Forerunners on his part, in that he believes their children should at least know NOT to play with toys they don't understand the purpose of.

    • @bonelesschickennuggets1868
      @bonelesschickennuggets1868 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To add insult to injury, it has to be extremely exasperating knowing that a human, a species objectively SO far behind technologically than the covenant, still knows better about the purpose of the ring has to be something that makes the gravemind’s collective intelligence hurt like hell.

    I think my favorite thing about the Gravemind is it's a great example of how to have a villain with a simple unambiguously evil goal. Even within Bungie's original vision (back before the Forerunners were retconned from being ancient humans to their own species) it still gets this idea across- it wants to devour all life. If you ask it why, it could very eloquently and effectively explain its reasoning in immaculate detail, but no matter what reason or reasons it gives it would just be the long, fancy way of saying "You are my food, and I *will* eat you. It's only a matter of time."
