Your scholar this week made a mistake. Joseph Smith was NOT a gentile. In 2 Nephi 3, it is very clear that Joseph is a literal descendant of Joseph the son of Jacob and Rachel. That would make Joseph of the house of Israel.
Very true, Joseph Smith is recognized as a descendant of Israel. However, since Joseph was raised in a gentile culture and civilization, our scholar was referring more generally to that background.
