  • BNSF Northtown Yard is the home of Northtown Diesel Shop, which sees large amounts of EMD and GEs being serviced. One of the more interesting sights is when they load test a locomotive. In this video, we'll see a former Santa Fe GP35 being load tested. The engine, now since rebuilt (EMD 645) and classified as a GP39-3, has had a long service life since it was built back in May of 1964 for the ATSF.
We start off as the unit is in run one, and gets brought up to notch 5. After a few minutes and checks by BNSF personal, its taken back down to idle. It is then taken up to run 8 and makes some wonderful EMD sounds as it roars in 8 for the rest of the video. We'll see a machinist talking measurements and performing checks throughout this process. Hearing, and seeing this happen, was a treat and sounded great. The video ends just as they start to load test a C44-9 which was right in front of it. This is just one of the many things NTW does to keep trains, and the railroad moving daily.

in case anybody ever wondered how this works it uses the dynamic break heat grid as a load bank that’s why I hear the fan come on essentially it’s getting red hot in there and it’s making sure that the alternator produces full amps, check for overheating issues etc.

Thankyou I have always wondered about that! I was like, where does the power go?! What load where?! Haha.

We have a pair of EMD MP-45A’s (V-20 EMD 645) emergency diesel generators and run load tests quarterly (used to be bi-weekly when the plant was operating). I always loved the sound of the EMD. It thunders. And they are well-built machines. They will last a very long time if maintained. Btw, a V-20 EMD 645 will burn approx. 225-275 gallons per hour.

Thanks for watching! I am a huge fan of the V20 645s... I grew up on the Wisconsin Central, and they had fleets of SD45s with the EMD 645 V20s in them. When they would be in run 8 and working hard, they sounded amazing... The fuel consumption factor blows my mind.

you should have a video of that test! usually we tie em into the grid … that’s about what the gensets burn the 35 series cats and 4000 series mtu’s in hospitals

@@RDC_Autosports Yes they would tie to the grid for tests. Unfortunately, that plant is now decommissioned and I no longer work there.

Awesome! Thought it was a model with smoke until I saw people moving!
20 years ago I would shoot photos on 4x5" film using a long lens focal length with a shallow depth of field to create a miniature esthetic.
Thought this was on a HO layout at first glance.
    Very cool!!! Great video- thanks!!

Yeah, it does look quite model-like. Probably the viewpoint of the opening shot that does it. We're used to seeing models from this kind of angle, but not the real thing.

I don't know the EMD 645 is still there. 🤔🤔🤔I thought the 710 engine has replace it... But it sounds amazing, even if you don't make the loco run across the rail.😀😀😀

The 710 and now the 1010 have replaced it in new builds. But anything prior to the GP/SD60 still has a 645 (or a 567 if it's super-old).
