The ten unit SD70M order were part of a UP order that NS was able to get. These were the only new units purchased by NS with a desktop control stand. In the case of NS they were always late to the party behind BNSF and UP when it came to new unit purchases and often got what was left for production availability for that year.
They were late to the party, always, but also the company strategy and planning vision. NS stayed loyal to DC traction, and switching from high short hood to low short hood (hi hood SD40-2, B23/30-7, GPs etc; later when other companies switched to wide safety cab, NS sticked to Spartan cab all the way with C40-9 and SD70
Don't forget about all the rebuild programs they make up for older units or for units that are in storage, even from other railroads, just to cancel the process at some point or sell and put the units back into storage. They only completed 135/240 SD60E rebuilds,52/80 SD70ACC rebuilds, recently reacquired 46 SD70M-2's (Now as SD70ICC's) after having them in storage, and did 110 SD70ACU rebuilds until selling 65 units to PRLX that are being scraped. In all honesty, most of the SD9043MAC's and SD70ACU's already had cracked frames which is why Union Pacific wanted to get rid of the units for dirt cheap.
The SD70ACi bb are meter gauge eight axles locomotives with two four axles articulated trucks for the tight curves of the Brazilian meter gauge railroads. You should check them out on You tube.
There's just something about those engines painted black that makes em look mean lol. I like it. For engine design, these are among my favorite. I'm not a rail fan per say but I do have my particulars. Especially sound of the engine running full tilt.
The thing about the SD70 family is they all are higher HP then their GE versions, and are also heavier making for better Tractive Effort as well. HP is good for speed but means nothing if you can't stick to the rail and that is where weight comes in. Heavier you are, the better you stick to the rail.
The only EMD units to surpass the C44-9W's,AC4400CW's,and ES44AC's on horsepower are the SD75I's & SD75M's.All other EMD units are just right behind the GE units on power ratings. Also,GE units are far more better when it comes to incredible tractive effort and dynamic braking for serious tonnage. The only advantage most EMD units have is quicker loading traction motors, both DC & AC,and perhaps acceleration even though most don't have instant throttle response like gevos do.Everyone else can also agree that an EMD unit won't catch on fire like a GE unit but that's not doing much.Modern EMD units aren't as great as most of the older units.
Great video man thanks for doing all that research! Big SD70 fan here I really hope CSX decides to start rebuilding the later ordered flaired radiator models those things are looking rough these days the paint didn’t hold up well at all.
Sorry, I know this sounds picky, but bro was confusing me calling 2003 and 2005 “Twenty oh three” and “twenty oh five”😂 reading the date like it’s a trains number
As I’m new to this channel and I’ve come to enjoy it as I also watch Distant Signal and the information he also gives but my one negative is you might slow down on the narration, like take your time. Otherwise great video
you think all the SD70M-2 will be scrapped or will we see a rebuild program by PRLX? Looks like NS was liquidating these. Would be nice to see one preserved.
NS recently reacquire 46 of their then-former SD70M-2 units earlier this year. I'm thinking it ties in to how much they like the SD70ACE and it's 710 reliability. I hope they rebuild the M-2 units.
Ns is awesome company I am shocked on this union pacific is rigth its crazy they sd70m units they locals or mainline runs they been update some but not all union pacific also done it some ge units union pacific has been doing some in sd70ace but only issue heard from union pacific sd40-2 sd40n ride really smoth
I only know what I know about locomotives because I have followed GM history and learned that GM dominated in just about everything it was into. GM wiped out the competition like Baldwin, Alco, etc but time and politics was not kind. Electromotive, Detriot Diesel, Cleveland Engine, GMC Truck and Coach, Euclid, Terex, and the automotive industry were hated by many for being good and dominating. I am sure that ford fans hated to see GM as the big guy, Bradford Snell hated the Bus and Coach division, ralph nader hated the auto maker, Alco fans and Baldwin fans surely hated EMD, and when the lawsuits finally subsided you now see what government can do to ruin even the biggest giant. Most don't even know that Allison was a division of GM. It is dominant and was the only choice for automatic trannys on heavy vehicles. Many don't know that the RTS bus was developed and first produced by GMC.
The info is a little inaccurate. Lube oil does not make it way into the exhaust of a 2 stroke diesel. Diesel and gas 2 strokes are completely different and have nowhere near the environmental effects as a gas 2 stroke that uses oil and gas mixture.
Came here to say this. 2-stroke diesel intake is forced-induction scavenging with clean, high pressure air. Lube is not mixed with the fuel or intake air. The poorer exhaust quality comes from lower combustion efficiency and a smaller range of acceptable stoichiometry - leading to more NOx and unburnt fuel in the exhaust. A two-stroke at large scale can easily meet Tier 4 exhaust with catalyst and DEF.

Amen!! Ac did a great job on this one. Can't wait for the 80 and 90 Mac videos
-70ace engines are great all around. Always love getting them for lead motors. Quiet, smooth riding, pull great.
You did a good job of
combining 10 vids into one.

Crazy amount of information in this video! Well researched and very educational.
The SD70ACe-BB was built for Brazilian 1000 mm gauge railways. Began in October, 2015. 2015 to present. Hope it helps AC!!!
YESSSSSS!!!!! Been waiting for this video for since the last SD70 video AC!!
You pack a lot into these podcasts but I can rewatch them over and over learning more each time. You are awesome AC.😊
I had no idea there was that many configurations. It’s like the narrator was speaking a different language. Lol! 🤯#mindblown
FANTASTIC! Thank you Trains 21.
Love this channel..love emd locos..thanks A.C.!!!

You make all of this information easy to listen to. Excellent video AC.

As much as I am a Foamer for NS Thoroughbred SD70ACC, I really like the EMD Thundercab SD70ACe locomotives owned by BNSF

Great video love the KCS 4007 locomotive
2:55 UP does that with 90% of their trains I see 20,000 Hp lashups all the time here.
“Bensef” 😂 never heard that before

CSX started rebuilt of 4701-4830 batch of flared SD70MAC s. 4714 the one I see on loaded coal looks better than when was new 20 years ago!
great, love thoses informations on re building engines
The ghost of Hunter Harrison strikes again!
Some thought the Mighty (Big) MACS were only available at McDonald’s. Wrong Again, the Mighty MACS are found on the High Rails on the Railroad. 😬👍
I hope CN keeps the SD70Is
1:41 sounds like a GP60 in idle
Great Video, Awesome!

Great, informative video. I learned a lot. Thanks!
You're cranking out the good stuff now!
Great info video!🎉❤
EMD did have the better looking wide cab

Changing playback speed to .75 might be of use to you. There are a few people on TH-cam that I speed up or slow down. Comes in really handy IMO.
Dang that's a long time

The SD70M-2's that Norfolk Southern sold to PRLX are now back in usage once again and have been rebuilt on top of that as SD70ICC's.

Norfolk Southern is going to have all like horseheads and I am fine with that if they are going to rebuild their old school ge dashs 9
Crazy you threw in the METRA, because I just saw the 502 passing through Knoxville this past weekend.

it is accurate as is the reason why Detroit Diesel 2 stroke engines are banned in America.

I wonder if there’s anybody in BNSF territory who actually says Bensef. It’s a jarring sound to me

This was made before NS ordered the IACs.

EMD may not have the capability for MASS production.
KCS should have stayed with the Gray. the colored units are hideous. Oh well new paint is coming.
You mentioned dynamic braking; why do dynamic brakes glow purple when they're in use (Virtual Railfan's "Grab Bags" refer to them as 'Purple Haze)?
