These are M1s, and M1IPs being taken out of long storage in the high desert. They are on their way to Aniston Alabama to be broken down for rebuild. Once broken down they will be retrained and sent to Lima Ohio to become M1A2SEPV3s.

I counted 95 tanks. I'm back, 3 years later, September 2023, still counting. This time I count 97 tanks, and about 14 are single oads in the front of the train, the rest double loads.

Former Abrams operator here. Never got to see the trains travel between bases, as I was at either end waiting for them. I also became the UMO (Unit Movement Officer) who's job is to supervise and plan the rail movement of the vehicles. Every one of those tanks has fuel (not much admittedly) and is capable of being driven for a good distance. All ammo and installed weapons like the mounted machine guns are not present however for obvious reasons. The most back breaking part is doing the tiedown thing, and after that guiding the vehicles just so onto the cars is much harder than you think. Another important thing to note is that Abrams tanks (and Bradley IFV's) aren't driven everywhere. We transport them via truck (HEMTT) to the loading and unloading zones. Driving the vehicle is only done in short distances for maintenance or fueling, longer distances are only traveled for training exercises and proper war. I could keep going, but congrats for reading this far! Best job I ever had!

On a previous video of tanks being transported east bound over Tehachapi the tanks where transported on 6 axle flat wagons. These proved extremely noisy as the flanges squealed due to there being no lateral 'give' in the 3 axle trucks round sharp corners. I cannot see, because of the shadows, if these wagons are 4 or 6 axle, I would assume the double loads (124 ton) are 6 axle, unless the tanks are stripped out, and the single loads 4 axle?

The US always uses the DODX flat cars to move Abrams tanks. Never seen them moved with ANYTHING else.

Those all look like older model M1's. Like M1A1. None have the independent commander's sight found on the M1A2, and several are missing road wheels - most commonly the middle two. Also looking at the variety of paint schemes (tan, olive, and three-color NATO) I think that these are all older model tanks going to disposal or possibly remanufacture into newer versions.

@nowonyuno They use modified M113's at the NTC to represent threat vehicles. M1's would be horribly expensive to run as OPFOR vehicles due to the cost of running their turbine engines.

Back in the '90s we and our friends used to drive up to the loop and sit and watch for the train.
I counted 97 Abrams, close to the number required for a Second Division Armored Brigade, I believe. That's supposed to be about 116 MBTs.
This train was hauling about 6300 tons of MBTs.

Aren't the M1s going to get that long-overdue A2 upgrade/rebuild/refit, I heard about, or something? 6:06 - That would explain why I don't see the diesel or original equipment jet turbine engine modules that hang off the back side (just behind the treads) of any of them!

Lifelong UK Railway enthusiast enjoyed watching all twelve plus minutes of that. Thanks for posting.
Maybe an illusion created by the lens, considering the size of the USA, what surprised me was to see the very tight radii of some of the curved parts of those sections of track. Here in little old UK, such tight curves are rare. We have long freight trains in the UK ~ helps keep freight off our traffic laden Roads and Motorways, but nowhere near as long as you have over there. Impressive stuff.

Why do the first few cars only have one tank per car? Is it to raise braking force per lb of weight? That's my guess?

Nice video, my only suggestion is to edit out the parts where there is only track to view. As an example, it is a full 67 seconds in the beginning before the first engine appears.

THM SGR yeah... too bad there isn't also some sort of software that lets you trim your videos so that the viewer doesn't need to do your job for you.... oh wait...

Are those tanks going to a military base and gonna go to Afghanistan?

    Nice catch!
Some thoughts about how this consist was put together: I find it strange that the heavier loads is at the end of the train instead of directly behind the leading locos. Each tank weights in between 60-70t, so you have almost double weight cars (heavier than a single engine!) in the end of the train which might results in derailing if this trains go down a grade and has to turn at the same time. But since there is no helpers at the end, I conclude this train only went up grade.

How do they determine how many engines they need? Why there were two engines in the middle?

Is there any logic to when and where a train blows it's horn?
In the country where I live, you rarely hear it, unless there is animals on the track
