  • JS Bach's famous 'Gigue' Fugue in G BWV 577 played on the organ of Immanuelkerk in Ermelo, Netherlands.
    I hope you enjoy this performance of this jolly piece, and that you can hear all the parts on this super organ which has been sampled for Hauptwerk by ‪@PiotrGrabowski_Organs‬: piotrgrabowski.pl/ermelo
    Thanks to cameralady extraordinaire, Caroline!

    Marvelous performance, and at a perfect tempo, too. So many organists tend to rush this. Good camera work by Caroline, too. Next you need to tie a GoPro on Nala and let her run through the pedals whilst you're playing, ;)

      I agree, the tempo is good, let's think about mechanical organs of Bach period. I don't like so much the stops choice, mixtures and fagott 16' at the pedal.

    MY STARS! You have gone and played my favorite musical work of all, and better than ANY other performance I have ever heard. That includes Mr. and Mrs. Durufle on the dual Mollers at the National Shrine at Washington DC. Their rendition was electrifying, and yours as well, at a somewhat higher voltage.

    I just love this fugue and this performance is perfect in every respect - tempo, registration (especially the echo effect on the Brustwerk) and the no nonsense ending that doesn't pander to the temptation to do a slight rallentando in the last 2 bars. Brilliant, Richard (even though your playing does make me feel like a paraplegic!) Keep up the good work. I'm off to do some practice now!

  • @robertgift
    @robertgift 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Wonderful! Since I cannot read and play thisimultaneously, I had to memorize it. The mordents, grace notes and trills heard athe beginning should be continued throughout this magnificent work. Nice that Richard plays mordents others omit, such as 1:27, 1:55. (At 2:16 I mordent the pedal C.)
    The pedal notes following should be played for full value, not shortchanged and separatedue to difficulty. At 2:18 I trill the pedal C#. Very unfortunate thathe videographer does not show the complex pedaling after 2:21. Again, those pedal noteshould be played full value and connected. We tend to shortchange notes trying to geto the next notes.
    Mordenthe G at 2:29, E at 2:45. 3:01 Mordenthe pedal. Playing this fromemory will sound even better!

    Moderate tempo, and no dry staccato, good ! But I don't like so much the Mixtures for the fugas. The same for the pedal, the Fagott 16' is too heavy. But I like the tempo and the phrasing, I'm learning it like that.

    Very nicely done Richard! Excellent organ, registration,and tempo ... this is a very special piece to me -- the first organ piece I learned (self-taught at age 16 -- when I fell in love with it from E. Power Biggs' recording).
    I had hoped that you would hold the quarter notes rather than play them staccato -- i.e. "tah - dit tah - dit tah ..." rather than "dit - dit dit - dit dit ... " -- it makes it so much more lyrical. You did this when you sight-read this fugue a few months prior -- holding the quarter notes beautifully! * (see your playing and my comments at th-cam.com/video/Uo0ai0Zpf4w/w-d-xo.html ). One can get a sense of how this would sound by playing your sight-reading th-cam.com/video/Uo0ai0Zpf4w/w-d-xo.html at 2:17:05 with the playback speed set to 1.25 ( or 1.5 ... !!!! ) -- it really sings!!! . . . ;-)
    But, for now, E, Power Biggs' recording still holds the crown for me. Nice try, though - maybe someday.

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      E. Power Biggs' recording remains the best I havever heard. First heard it in high school band class. Loved it so much that I took the record home over Christmyth break.
      In the pedal Biggs accidentally hits an adjacent note, sounding much like a mordent. Soundso good that I _purposely_ play the "Biggs mordent" there.
      The staccato is caused by hurriedly getting into position to play the next note. Even Biggsometimes does this. Thoughis pedal is frustratingly flawed later, Biggs'till remains my favorite recording.
      My favorite organist, Helmut Walcha, does not play this in his "Complete Organ Works" on ArchivEdition. Wish that I had written to Helmut praising everything that he did and asking why 577 is omitted.
