  • JS Bach's (1685-1750) Toccata and Fugue in F major BWV 540 played on the 4-manual Harrison and Harrison organ of Cirencester Parish Church, UK.
    This is from an Organ Recital I gave at this spectacular church, and if you'd like to watch the whole concert click here: • 🎵 ORGAN RECITAL from C...
    Incidentally, the colour of this console is more-or-less the colour that the new BIS organ will be, along with the stops and key cheeks. Lots of similarities!

    Toccata BWV 540 is also one of my favourite Bach's pieces. I'm glad to hear the moderate tempo, not as hasty as many other organist here on YT treat it. And your pedal part in pink socks calls for the world's media attention! :-)) God bless you, Richard and your family! :-)

    Richard: This is the perfect tempo for the celebrated Toccata! Also, I think that the 'leggiero' touch that you use is well suited to the acoustic of the room. I like the rhythmic flourish you add at the end of the first major section. Well done!

    This is one of my all time favourite Bach toccatas. It’s forward movement and dance like quality is clearly from the same mind and composer’s pen of the progenitor of the Dance of God. This performance both sings and dances. Great performance without tubas or rubatos. Lovely!

    One of the best sounding Toccata I've ever heard. Love the tempo and articulation. It gives you time to consume what's really there, fully brings up the beauty the construction. Fugue also sounds wonderful, like each note speaks by itself.

    Love your tempo. It’s very appropriate for the organ and the acoustic of the building. This is your interpretation and I respect it. Everyone is entitled to have its own interpretation other wise we would always sound the same which is unimaginable. One doesn’t need to be on a ‘Bach organ’ to play a Bach piece. Heck, I recorded Langlais on a Dutch organ because it sounded wonderful and glorious. All music is beautiful regardless. Keep it up!

    THIS was well beyond superb! Sir, your playing was absolutely magnificent and the organ sounded gorgeous indeed.
    For all, please forgive my next question as I've yet to get to the UK despite my wanting to go to England particularly since I was eleven years old and therefore, I've yet to play an actual British pipe organ despite there being at least two Harrison & Harrison organs within driving distance from Orlando here in Florida albeit those consoles probably have an American console layout hence my question: I see that on this organ and practically all UK built organs that I've seen on TH-cam, there's only either one or two expression pedals. Does Harrison & Harrison, the former Mander or Willis not offer expression pedals for each enclosed division and also a crescendo pedal?
    I see that this organ has two expression pedals one is for the Swell division and the other is for perhaps the Choir division, but if there's a Solo division, is it unenclosed and what about the crescendo pedal?
    It took me quite a long time to become accustomed to not seeing a coupler rail (the superb G. Donald Harrison Aeolian-Skinner in the Mormon Tabernacle doesn't have a coupler rail either nor does the large Schoenstein in their Conference Center) on your consoles and here you can typically couple most divisions to the Great at 16' 8' 4' as opposed to only 8' on I imagine some if not most organs in the UK. Some expected differences for sure, but I have to thank Father Willis for the concave pedal board and for pistons in addition to the superb sound of the organs he and his firm built. Thanking you ALL in advance for your response.

    • @beautyinsound
      @beautyinsound  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The expression pedals on this organ are swell and solo. It’s quite uncommon for the choir to be enclosed on our cathedral and church organs as those ranks are usually of an immediate and clear nature, designed to help lead the choir and congregation in the liturgy.
      Crescendo pedals - we don’t use them because diminuendos and crescendos are generally done by hand and by thumb pistons.

    • @bhigdaddymark
      @bhigdaddymark 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@beautyinsound
      Thanks so very much for your reply!
      I'm happy to have learned that as I really didn't know and how interesting. In American and Canadian organs, the Choir division is enclosed with an expression pedal of course and in addition to having the Choir division, many organs will also have an unenclosed Positiv division as is the case on the organ that I regularly play and many will also have an enclosed Solo division.
      I've never been a fan of nor ever used the crescendo pedal as I prefer setting pistons ranging from very quiet, strings, slush etc to full organ. With my diabetic eyes, I simply cannot read toe studs and therefore much prefer using pistons (thank you Henry Willis Sr.) always. Thanks again, be well and be safe!

    Fabulous! A reference performance, IMO. I've played the Toccata before at university, but the Fugue was beyond me. It is so majestic, a true double fugue, it rolls along gradually building such complexity of interleaving themes, yet without feeling crushing. I marvel at Bach 's genius. I've listened to this several times. it stands up to repeat listening. The only one thing that niggles in an otherwise perfect realization of this composition. The last couple of bars. The registration was too thick - too heavy a use of 16' on the keyboards. It obscured the melody in the last bar. Other than that, lovely. Marvellous even.

    Good tempo ! It is too often played too fast, even if a bit faster is not annoying. Playing with socks is a bit risky, you can hurt yourself if you bump the sharp/flat notes. And when the keys of the pedal are heavy, it is much more comfortable to have good shoes with rigid sole. About the performance, I am a bit surprised by the ornement at 1:42. And the full staccato for the sixteenth notes do'nt completely convince me. Good performance, however.

     @Richard Harrold Other than being an organist I have been a professional classical solo / orchestral trumpet player for the best part of 40yrs, a big band pianist for 20, MD of various touring musicals and have never heard such bullshit as your comment regarding conceit being 'uniquely' confined to organists.
    I can tell you quite categorically that orchestral instrumentalists *can* be exactly as you describe, with an added dash of venom. I have witnessed the snobbery first hand in opera, and have even heard Big Band instrumentalists comment how their solos had been 'above' the level of their audience.
    So you see Mr. Richard Harold (I will do you the honour of addressing you according to civil convention, unlike like your references to 'McVeigh' that you afforded @BEAUTY IN SOUND | Richard McVeigh in your other diatribe) it is not 'unique' to organists, rather it is unique to a relatively small breed of musicians from all walks of life.
    When you have managed to dislodge that huge chip you appear carry around for some unknown reason I would be interested to understand why you feel no other musical profession needs an audience!

    Good tempo. Finally. Every organist except you plays this piece entirely too fast to the point of absurdity. Great job.
    Edit: But please, for the love of god, don’t play in your socks. That’s so amateurish, and such a bad example for young organists.
