They're so natural. It's like watching some rare exotic birds do a mating dance. Who can take their eyes and ears off of them? Not I. These two are so different, yet so equally paired by their voice through the music. Daves is the intense genius introvert, who seems like the voice of the hillbilly mountains, all cleaned up in a white dress shirt; and Thile is the polished showman with the chosen, rumpled style. Somehow, introvert and extrovert, expert artifice and authentic introversion, are on the same level through musicianship. Dave's voice is just like Thile's mandolin, when Daves' sings. his guitar is eonly xcellent, but his voice is like a mountain god.
the dual-improvisation on big sciota that starts around 5:35 is just phenomenal: they are so instantly responsive to each others thematics, dynamic changes, where they need to be range-wise to complement each other and fill the sound spectrum. I couldn't come close to writing counterpoint like that, and thile-daves are doing it on the spot!
haha, I've seen him flat out wasted, especially some back stage stuff and absolutely kills it. He could be blackout drunk and knock a performance out of the park lol
There is a reason Chris Thile and Nickel Creek recorded their first album at the age of 14 (and kudos to the Watkins, who are amazing as well), and won the MacArthur Genius Grant at the age of 31, has recorded with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Jerry Douglas, founded the Punch Brothers, and now hosts Live From Here. He is a flat-out genius who hangs around with like people. Oh, to have him sitting around the campfire with me and my friends!
It's about capturing a moment in the lives of these performers (and to generate interest in Old First Reformed Church, Brooklyn). Fiddle tune request time is an important part of this duo's concerts. I'm glad I was able to document it here.
My favorite part of this video has always been a tie between calling Jerusalem Ridge the Call Me Baby of fiddle tunes and the haranguing that Thile gives the audience for requesting songs with lyrics.
@@bkleinyt ok fellas who taught yall how to troll?!?! Whats this polite understanding crap?? You have to be rude, irrational, and completly disregard anyones elses point of view. Improper grammar is expected. Now, from the top!
Chris Thile is the Mozart of the mandolin. However as Salieri once said to Mozart "too many notes." I couldn't hear the melody on Forked Deer. Sorry, I said it.
It is not a requisite for a fiddle tune to have no lyrics. That's a misconception. Maybe playing a, ahem, fiddle, would be a more essential item to be concerned with when playing, you know ehh, fiddle tunes
That’s why it’s “playing a fiddle tune”, or else on fiddle it would be known as just “just a tune”. Transcription takes talent and that’s part of the fun and intrigue

I thought I was a musician but now I understand I'm just a clown playing some chords around a campfire, lol.
This is the video I watch when I’m sad. Absolutely phenomenal
Can't believe this has been on here for eight years and no one has commented! Great job 😮
Wow THAT was impressive !
This is the best piece of Bluegrass I have heard in a long time.Sorry Billy..
Fantastic !
That’s one rushing river! What skill!
Breathtaking.
This is what happens when two virtuosos get together. Pure magic happens.

Incredible musicians. Wow.

@Trunk McEight high iq hobbies. I like that. Haha
That tempo shift when going to Big Sciota. Wow.
WARP SPEED MR. SULU! my brain barely comprehends the tune of Big Sciota these fellas are so fast!!!!
This is a master class.
Those guys are amazing!
My new favorite big scioto
YOU ARE AMAZING GUYS!!!!...
Wonderful song.... :)
I wanted to be at this show but it sold out quick. Glad I can see it here!
Absolute genius. Period.
And, I like the way they share the mic!
Excellent !!!
Ha! Thile is hammered in this video, and still rips it up better than anyone.
haha, I've seen him flat out wasted, especially some back stage stuff and absolutely kills it. He could be blackout drunk and knock a performance out of the park lol
There ARE lyrics to "Big Sciota".
i love big sciota. it reminds me of big sci country (montana).
It's not for me to understand how one could not like this?
I thought I didn't like blue grass until my music teacher sent me this video!! WOW AMAZING!!
This is just sick!!!!!
STUPENDOUS!
Fantastic
This is insane!
OMG! They're "off the hook!" Thile is super human. He was born with a mandolin in his hands I think!
Whew, I know every fiddle tune called. Every one of these tunes gets called at the bluegrass jam sessions in Chicago.
An old fiddler once said there's really only 3 fiddle tunes. And two of those are "Liberty".

Quality!!
he puts the fingers on his left hand in a pencil sharpener before every gig :D
Ouch
ahh that transition around 3:30 is so beastly
The ending is pretty slick too.
The whole performance is a masterclass.
Too good.
This is what it must've been like to watch Charlie Parker...
Listen and learn Billy 'Twings
What kind of mic are they using? Sounds amazing no feedback. Great playing by the way! Cheers!
EL Holt That BG standard the AT4033.
Waiter I like my deer forked and tender. I just learned the second one now to dig into the venison. Hopefully I can track a basic version.
I have sciota. And it hurts.
The "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" of stringed instrument combos. Thile, "I shoot better when I move"..... like Sundance...Ha!
Ha ha..so amazing! 😂😂😂
Kaaaaboooom!
Michael Daves is one of the few people who can show Thile up when it comes to improvising around a fiddle tune man
I’d be offended if you just didn’t come over to my house and play mando for me all day every day
Yes, please, thank you
GeemaNIDDLY!
My only wish is that they cut out the first 1:30 and got right to the music.

No criticism intended. I'm glad you recorded it the way you did. My bad. All the best to you.
Hey thanks. Best to you too.

so jealous! lol

Yeah, probably too many notes. But he is often restrained, despite his capacity. Probably too many drinks in this case...
OK.....er........ok....😶......
