    I have a Moto X4 but I'm considering upgrading because it's nice to have something new to play with. The camera quality on my phone has definitely gone down quite a bit over time. And as someone that loves photography and doesn't always want to bring a real camera, I really liked how everything looked on the Pixel 4 and am not sure if the 5 is a real upgrade.

    Superb review Sam. I'm in the market for an upgrade to my 3 year old Pixel with the primary aim of replacing my Sony A6000 for creating indoor videos. Does the camera on the newer pixels stand up to a mid range mirrorless for casual vlogs? What did you shoot this vide with? (Apart from the actual phones themselves 🙂)

    Very interesting. In some other comparisons between Pixel 5 and pixel 4A, I got the impression the 5 takes softer or less in focus photos. Did you ever notice that?
    Maybe the photos are not all that consistent, or maybe the software version used has been different. Anyway, good to see that Pixel 5 was performing better than the 4A in these tests, as I just ordered one ;)

    Good to see the differences between the phones so clearly. My pixel 5 arrived today and I instantly noticed the audio sounded fairly processed and boosted in high end.
    Also, this may be me having not had a pixel before, but do Google just flat out not support PAL framerates? I can't for the life of me set 25fps in native app. I can in filmic pro, but would be nice to have native app default to 25.
    Finally, the video comparisons probably would be more useful at a standard 16:9, given majority of users wont be using an anamorphic crop on the footage. Just a suggestion, to show full FOV of the lenses

    21:08 I really can not understand why reviewers try to spread misleading information. 4k video needs a resolution of 8.3 megapixels. A 16:9 crop of the 12.2 megapixel sensor has 9.1 megapixels. Google uses video stabilization, which crops the sensor. Already a 1.06x crop leads to a lower resolution than 4k (9.1/1.06² < 8.3) and as far as I know Google crops a lot for the video stabilization. I even don't know whether the Pixel 5 still allows to turn off video stabilization, otherwise you can not record in 4k. The result would be just upscaled to 4k

    • @rishitgupta3644
      @rishitgupta3644 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      google uses optical image stabilization only which involves the actual sensor moving inside the phone
      and not electronic image stabilization which crops in...

      P4XL was the best, for sure. I passed on the P5 as it was an obvious downgrade to it. 3XL was a bust for me, had a ton of issues with it. P2XL was a really good phone too. Never had the OG Pixel so I cannot comment on it. Pixel line is good, but too expensive for what it offers. Screens, Battery life, subpar video etc, bezels. audio quality. Too many negatives for a $1000 phone.
      I held on to the P4XL until the S21 Ultra came out and having switched now after having Pixels the last 4 years, it made me realize just how much the Pixel line falls flat, for its price.

  • @Quoutub

    2:40 The amount of blur is even different, when you compare the same phone. I tried multiple Pixel 3a with the same Android version and same Google camera version and they blur the background differently (different accuracy as well as very different amount of blur). The reason might be that every(!) phone has a slightly different lens and Google used machine learning for the blur. This leads to inconsistent results. In this example you probably see the same behaviour, all four phones have the same 4.38mm f/1.73 specification. By the way, there are other things that can be different when you compare the same phone. When I compared multiple Pixel 3a, the sharpness of the selfie camera varied a lot, the severity of dead pixels varied (but all Pixel 3a suffer a lot from dead pixels) and the calibration of the autofocus varied a lot (for example the far setting in Night Sight didn't work with one Pixel 3a)

    I am currently in phone limbo, as I've had a Pixel 3XL since May of last year and was ready to upgrade. I am a big phone person so the Pixel 4a and 5 were out of the question for me unfortunately. My main point of interest is cameras, so I finally landed on the iPhone 12 Pro Max (having owned one iPhone in the past.) I couldn't believe my eyes, the quality was somehow SO POOR compared to my almost 2 year old pixel! So I returned it. Next, the Galaxy Note20 Ultra. Surely two $1400 phones wouldn't live up to the hype, right? WRONG. The autofocus is almost completely unmanageable and not even Pro Mode can completely save the issues. I have taken side by side comparisons between my pixel 3xl and this brand new galaxy note20 ultra and it's comical how poor the focus is on the samsung. However, I like everything else about the phone. So I have been considering just buying a Pixel from google and switching back and forth between phones depending on what I'm doing that day, week or month. It's horribly convoluted to consider, but I just need a big phone as my daily driver. All that said, this video has helped me make my decision! And I so appreciate the time and effort you put into making this. Thank you!!

    6:12 or 27:06 I don't agree at all. Sadly, people often just want to believe the marketing. I have a Pixel 3a. I have tested the digital zoom extensively. I tried multiple Pixel 3a. In perfect light conditions without shadow areas you gain basically 0% more details when you compare it with traditional digital zoom of a Google Nexus 5x or single frame dng files. A lot of people make the mistake that they judge digital zoom photos without looking at pixel level, that's nonsense as a Full HD screen only has 2 megapixels, while 2x digital zoom has 3 megapixels. So if you don't compare the images at pixel level, of course you can't see a difference. But this doesn't change the fact that you lose 75% of the resolution in perfect light conditions (without shadow areas). Google's zoom basically only improves the noise performance, which leads to more details in shadow areas or low light conditions. Other companies would use such algorithms at 1.0x. Furthermore Google also uses machine learning for the digital zoom, which actually can even lead to worse results than traditional digital zoom because machine learning does nothing else than guessing! So you need to differentiate between real details and fake details (approximately at pixel level !). Regarding videos the difference can be even more obvious because 2x video crops the sensor more than a 2x photo due to the different aspect ratio. Also keep in mind that the Pixel 4 doesn't have a 2.0x camera, it has a 1.6x 16 megapixel camera, which is cropped (that's equivalent to a 12 megapixel 1.85x camera).

      Bro Machine learning means how much accurate your guess is and general accuracy for a train test model to be unbiased is > 85%.
      That means what is there and others couldn't find, it will find it with the same details given.

    6:08 The Pixel 4 doesn't have a 2.0x tele camera. It is a 16 megapixel 1.6x camera which is cropped in order to behave as a ≈10 megapixel 2.0x camera. This is even mentioned in the official specifications.

    14:09 I definitely don't agree. Sadly, many reviewers don't test cameras accurately (actually not even that surprising as you can only test something well when you use it for many weeks/months). On a Pixel 3a Google's Night Sight takes up to 7 seconds in extreme low-light conditions and leads to slightly blurry photos, unless you stop breathing for 7 seconds. Sometimes even the astro mode turns on although I don't use a tripod. The TH-cam Pixel 5 review of Engadget shows that the Pixel 5 Night Sight mode can take 6.5 seconds. Google had a much better mode than Night Sight: It is the HDR+ enhanced mode of the Pixel 3a, which is nothing else than a fast Night Sight mode. It only takes up to 2.5 seconds (or up to 4s if you zoom), it gives you sharper photos than Night Sight due to a shorter exposure time and can give you as bright results as Night Sight in most light conditions, if you use exposure compensation. Colors and noise are also about the same. Sadly, it seems that neither the Pixel 4 nor the Pixel 5 have HDR+ enhanced. Note that Apple's night mode takes 1-3s as far as I know.

      I have a 3a XL, and when I was taking pictures alongside my friends rocking an iPhone 11 Pro Max, my night aight picture finished exposing faster. The processing took longer but he was holding up his phone to take the picture for a longer time. Even after when we compared, he thought my picture was still better.

      They took away HDR+ and enhanced? Well that sucks I'm using a old Gcam port with those features!

    26:28 Going from what may be an over-sharpened pixelated digital zoom to an over-softened optical zoom sure does emphasize the contrast and gives off a sort of 90s softcore porn vibe.

    On the 2x comparison the 4xl has quite a bit of lens flare ( ring around the sun and flare at the bottom right corner) none of the others have any, thought it is worth mentioning as you didn't

    • @magnetau
      @magnetau 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but I believe this is the case because for the Pixel 4XL he had a slight different angle used when he took the photo than the one used for the other 3 phones, look closely and you'll see. I noticed that also, but I believe is down to that.

    Pixel 5 video stabilization es awasome but as I said on other posts. It's basically the same hardware as the pixel 2 xl....camera sensor on pixel 5 is Sony's imx 363 mounted on pixel 3, 4 and 5. Ufs is still 2.1 on pixel 5. Same as pixel 2. Ram is also ddr4 same again as the pixel 2 and the speakers on the pixel 5 are not as loud and clear as pixel 4 xl. What I mean is that anybody with a Pixel 2, 3 or even 4 could wait another year and see if the rumors of a high specs Pixel are coming out on first middle of the year. Maybe we'll get camera hardware improvements and maybe the same cameras and sensors as the new iPhones. Better ufs storage and ddr5 RAM
