- Start your sock by swatching. ( I know... but stick with me, it's important)
Then we'll cast on using the cable cast on with extra stretchiness.

Measure around the ball of your foot and your ankle
Take that number and multiply it by your stitches per inch (spi)
For example, the ball of my foot measures 8” And my ankle is 9”
I’m knitting 9.5 spi after gauging my swatch
8 x 9.5 = 76 Since I’d like a little bit of negative ease, but not too much, I’ll cast on 72 sts.
7:23 Cast on using the cable cast on making sure to keep your spacing between stitches
(or the long tail cast on, loosely if you prefer)
Join in the round being careful not to twist your work
Begin knitting a 2 x 2 ribbing
(k2, p2, all the way round)

Thank you Jana for your wonderful videos. I have made vanilla socks but this was my first attempt at a pattern. It was simple but with a fabulous result. I gave the pair to a friend so she would know that I am with her every step of the way. I am going to start another pair and try slip stitching the heel and the bottom of the sock.

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful series! A little over a year ago I had this Idea in my head that knitting socks would be a great way to learn knitting since it's a rather small project (unlike a sweater) but still with some complexity, unlike a standard scarf. I joined the local knitting café thinking there would be a whise old lady saying "you don't need a pattern for socks, it just needs a bit of calculating." But noone there knew how to knit socks (but they did the most amazing mittens!) They however had a pattern and warned me that socks really was quite complex and not for beginners. After failing miserably to decode the heel-part I put it aside for a year, picked it up again a few days ago and after hopping around youtube and piecing together my sock I found your toe-tutorial. The second sock I did following your complete series but only so that the socks would match somewhat. Now I'm hooked and everyone I know will get socks for christmas! 😁And it turns out I was right! You don't need a pattern for socks, you just need to do some calculating 😁 (and it was absolutely beginner friendly! At least if one has your videos! 😂) This afternoon I will take measurements of my friends foot and start my second pair of socks, and this time I'm excited to try your heel reinforcement -- and perhaps even incorporating a pattern. Thank you so much for making sock knitting accessible.💚

Thanks,Jana. I was taught that cable cast on for my oldest son's baby sweater and used it ever since. Never knew what it was called or saw it anywhere! By the way, he is 34 lol thanks also for showing how you join 👍. I like the extra stitch but you are right, it's never snug enough on its own, and I've used it on over 100 prs of socks.
I'm so happy I will be finally getting some sock yarn.... It's hard when you be waiting for so long to order some good sock yarn .. And now I'm finally waiting to receive it in the mail..

I just wanted to THANK you, I have tried and tried to get the heal flap and turn, I ALWAYS ended up with HUGE thick fabric when I picked up stitches, your my Angel THANK YOU

I WISH to God I had found your tutorials last year when I was just thinking about learning how to knit. I already crochet quite a lot, and I do a lot of freeform crochet. I resist patterns because nothing about my body or my needs is what you would call "standard," as far as CLOTHING items are concerned. With the exception of a couple of shawls, I just don't do patterns - and even the patterns that I DO always end up being changed....by MOI.
PLEASE - don't anyone tell me to go knit something else first. The ONLY thing I want to knit is socks - for myself. Otherwise, crochet is SO MUCH EASIER. I want to knit a million socks because, unlike the rest of my wardrobe, I love crazy socks...but I want them to fit.
So far, I have destroyed about 300 yards of good yarn because I get down to turning the heel and I can't follow your instructions. You talk really fast, which I normally like very much - but you talk about OTHER methods while you are knitting a different method, whilc you are hiding your stitches with your fingers. AAARGH.
But there is something about your manner and your tone of voice and your method of explanation that, up until that point of turning the heel, I find pleasant to listen to and easy to follow. And CLEARLY, you love doing this - and I want to get to that point where I also love it. Right now - I am hating it. In fact, I just ripped up a book and threw it in the trash. it was SUPPOSED to be a "beginners" book but it was IMPOSSIBLE to read.
I would bet you could direct me to a straight-up beginners book that wouldn't drive me crazy with pages of unnecessary, irrelevant hyroglyphics.
What I want to do: DEVELOP A PATTERN FOR MY WEIRD FEET AND THEN MAKE A ZILLION PAIRS OF CRAZY SOCKS FROM IT.

Hi Jana, I’ve confused myself right at the start of following your sock tutorials! To do a swatch in the round, should I 1, swatch in the round, 2, follow your speed swatch tutorial and 3, follow your cable cast on tutorial for the swatch. Would be so grateful for your advice please. Really want to do it the right way from the very start. Love your videos, thank you for doing them for us ❤.
I would just do the speed swatch to begin with to see how many stitches per inch you knit with your given yarn and needles.
Hi Jana, when I first started knitting in 2018 and watching youtube instructional videos I had no idea for months that I could slow down the playback speed. It was a game changer for me. If you think of it could you mention that at some point in case there are folks like me, who don't know about the settings icon? Hi, thanks so much for this video. I used to kint frequently and had a whole sock phase. I'd love to get back into it. I noticed when you do the cable cast on you put the stitches on from the top. I have always picked them up from the bottom. Is picking them up from the top for a reason? You may ha r said and I missed it?! Many thanks 😊
I just bought this yarn from my LYS yesterday, a year after this recording was made. It's called Happy Feet 100. The 100 refers to gram weight.

Well, that depends. I'd round up if your pattern involves ribbing, since ribbing it very forgiving and elastic
Hi, Jana! Question on the cast on. Are you doing a knit stitch or are you going between 2 stitches?
Cathie Lanier she is placing the needle between 2 stitches.
Start with a slip knot. Then I did create one knit stitch to begin. After you have 2 sts on the left needle, insert the right needle between those two, to begin the cable cast on.

Why every one use long ail co why can't I use German co so more stretch?Do you have a video on DPN for socks tutorial I get so mess up with magic loop. by the way when to come to knitting the heel do you use 1/3 of he st. Is i a run to devid the total st, into 3 even parts? Thanks
I think most people prefer the long tail cast on because they learn it first, probably.
I don't currently have a video on knitting socks with dpns, but the principle is the same. Just divide your stitches evenly among your needles. I prefer to use half of the stitches for the heel as you'll see in a future video in this series. Thanks for watching!

With swatching, and measuring the ball of your foot and the ankle ends up a total of 72, how do you figure from that how many stitches to cast on?
I cast on 72 sts. I'm not sure I understand your question...
I just thought there was another figure I needed to do, I normally cast on 54 sts, so 72 sts sounds crazy..

Jana. So I have completed my swatch. I got 9 spi on size 1. My ball circum is 9.5. I have wide feet. I wear size 10.5 WW. Also ankle size is 11. Should I cast on 82 and leave it because my feet are wide-or should I go down to 78. ? I don’t like my socks right but I would like them to stay up and comfortable. ???
Since we're knitting cuff down, you have the luxury of accommodating the ankle size first, then you can decrease later to achieve a good foot fit. 9 spi X 11" ankle circumference would be 99 sts. But if you have a little bit of negative ease, you could subtract 9-10 sts, figure a multiple of 4 and cast on 88. If you think that's too loose after you knit the ribbing, you can try 84 or 80. You may have to experiment a bit to get what works for you.
Purl Together thank you. So I should go by the ankle circumference instead of ball of foot. Good to know so I would have to wait until I can get to the point to try it over my heel to see if too loose on the leg. Is that correct
Hi Jana, hope you're doing well. I measured 9 stitches per inch and 10" around the ball of my foot. Based on your experience, if I cast on 80 stitches will I get a pair out of ~400 yards of yarn? Thank you!
Maybe? It'll depend obviously upon how tall you want the leg of the sock to be and how long your foot is. If you want to be sure, you could always knit the cuff, heel and toe out of a contrasting color.

The issue i feel is that the pattern is not as puffy and cushy as yours looks. Do you think that the yarn I chose to use is not good for this stitch definition? The yarn is thin and i am using a 2.5 mm needle. Thank you

Hi Jana, I am hoping to knit my husband a pair of socks. As you recommended, I did knit my swatch. I am using 2.5mm needles and 4 ply 75% wool, 25% polyamide by Opal. My swatch says I knit 11 stitches per inch. When I do the calculations you suggest, 11stitches per inch multiplied by the circumference of the widest part of my husband's foot (10 inches). For negative ease, I casted on 108 stitches. and began a 1 inch 2x2 rib. BUT, this sock so far looks huge, and the ribbing will fall from my husband's calves to his ankles with this calculation. Please advise what I did wrong, and advise what I can do to correct the stitch count?
What part of his foot measures 10"? The ball of the foot or his ankle?
@@PurlTogether Thanks for your quick response Jana. I am a new knitter and this was my first swatch. I incorrectly counted how many rows instead of the number of stitches per inch. I now know I knit 8 stitches per inch and with my husband's 10 foot measurement at the ball of his foot, this calculates to 80 stitches. This sock looks like it will be a much better fit now. :)
What is the ball of your foot ?how do you measure that ?
The ball of the foot is the portion of the foot between your arch and toes. It's where your foot bends when you go up on "tippy toes." You'll want to measure the circumference of your foot at that point.

I had the same question. It’s the widest part of your foot just below your toes. Measure around there to get the “ball of the foot” measurement. 🤗♥️

Four weeks ago I was really happy with this method, but now the square-knot-tying makes me feel despair. I do not know how to tie a square knot and I hate even trying. It's TOTALLY COMPLICATED!😒
