- In today's video, Paul Drew from The Studio Rats goes through converting a garage to a studio space.
6 months ago I moved from The Surrey Hills down to Hampshire UK with my family to start a new life in the countryside. I couldnt put a studio in the garden like my previous house so I decided to convert my garage into my multi purpose music studio/ TH-cam studio.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs. - เพลง

Looks great and showcases well what can be done in a comparitively small space. I'm just in the process of completing the build of my studio in the loft of the house I moved to in April of this year, and it is now finally looking half-decent after having resembled an explosion in a junk shop for the past couple of months!

Did almost exactly the same thing a few years ago and my only problem was buying so much stuff during Covid and now’s the time to purge to get back some more room…

Pretty damn sweet Paul! I love to see different studios or man caves we all put together for ourselves. Mine is a modest space in our bedroom but my wife doesn't mind, its got great mojo, and suits my needs for now. My refuge from this mad World!

I too had garden studios for years in several houses we’ve had over the years. I now just use the smallest bedroom which is totally fine and so much more convenient
A really beautiful and well-maintained collection of gear, Paul. Though you’ve demonstrated better than anyone what a Katana can do, I didn’t really expect to see one there facing the grandeur of your Matchless. It would be great to have a video from you on your own gear-allegiances, which you talk about in passing very often but I don’t think you’ve ever discussed at length. By now you have many fans of your playing who would be interested in a sort of studio rig rundown. Glad to see how settled you and the dog look. 😊

Great video buddy..bought a house last year and just cleared out the room that's gonna become my jam cave man studio of sorts and I'll be taking many ideas from you my man...I'm super excited as well as I just tore out the carpets and I have beautiful oak flooring from the 40s to refinish..best to you my friend 🤘😜🎸

Very nice my friend. I got the palisades in I told you I picked up for$150. I usually play for 2-3 hours in the a.m. and tried it this morning in front of my lightspeed. I can get pretty much everything I need with those drives and it sounds great !

Very nice studio! I am selling my Axe Fx3 in a couple days and I am having regrets but I am a man of my word. Sucks to have to sell gear but need the money.
This looks awesome! Would you be able to talk some more about the acoustic treatment you did? I have a similar shaped room that has a lot of echo and I need some treatment. I definitely want to get at least two of those corner bass traps and I need something on the walls to eat up some of the high end too!

That was cool. I've been revamping (forever it seems) my studio. Looks like you did leave a bit of space to get behind stuff which is always space I hate to give up but sure nice to have when you need to rewire because using mirrors is not fun.

Hello Paul. Please tell us more about Precision MTM monitors. How big is the difference between them and Kii and Amphion. I want to invest in a couple of good speakers, like the Precision MTM, they are in my price range. I listened the small MTM and they impressed me. Kii is a dream, but too expensive.
They are really good. There not as good as the Kii’s but 90% of the way there. To be honest I don’t use the room correction on them. If your room sounds good I go for it.

No there not cheap but they’re not the £16k kii’s
@thestudiorats hi paul, do you use a video capture card for your cameras to record the video direct to the computer?
I use a blackmagic Atem, it records directly to hard drives.

Hi Paul, I'm just about to move and will convert the new property's garage into a studio. I have no DIY skills myself and will need to get contractors in to do the work. How did you go about getting the right tradespeople in to do your studio? Word of mouth, recommendation? Thanks, Mike
I just asked locally if anyone knew someone. I cant remeber exactly how much it cost but it was around £7000 to do it.

Im curious....this isnt related to recording but i was wondering what you meant by "we moved to our current place because it was a protected area?
I think you might have heard that wrong. I think I said we moved, and because it was a protected area I couldn’t build in the back garden. The UK has what is called Areas Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) that are protected from building.

Not being funny but why did you put plaster on the plaster board. In North America. We put insulation behind the drywall then paint it. It deadens the room to a point but still retains a low reverb effect.
You don’t plaster over drywall? There’s another strange difference between iur countries. Yes there is also insulation behind the drywall.
