I also show you how I designed a composer's desk, with built in rack space and a full-sized 88-key keyboard that doesn't give you back pain.

Thanks for this! I'm currently in the process of researching how I'm going to make over my studio. A lot of really great ideas here! Your Blackmagic SSD reader and the Qnap server are two things that I'm definitely going to look into...I have WAY too many external hard drives!

Hey Rob, I wish you could make an actual guide on how to build a small home studio. You seem to have a lot of experience and knowledge to be completely sure about what you do. Many of us, like me, don't really have that knowledge and would have to start from scratch. What to do and what not to do.. how to save money.. so many questions.
It would be awesome to get some help when it comes to building a home studio.
Computer, Audio interface, Monitor speakers and or headphones, dynamic mic, USB or Midi Hub and any physical gear either midi device or sythersizors linked and running under the same clock usually comming from your DAW. Some sound acoustic treatment and apart from that everything else is personal preference.

wonderful video! everything turned out wonderful. I have multiple faderfox midi controllers and it has all the knobs and faders i could use! 12 trackers for each device and you can daisy chain them to control more tracks!

Great video Rob. I might have to buy the plans for your desk off you one day! Really good that you mention how important the work environment is which is SO often overlooked in preference for more gear and and sexy things like cable management. It's critical how you feel in your studio and I have always spent a long time on those small but meaningful touches that make a studio your own special man/woman cave. Really loving how you quietly celebrate your achievements with the artwork - makes all the difference on those days when you feel less than inspired.

Splendid set up you have there! I really enjoyed the detail you've gone into to make this fabulous creative space. Guitar strings wise, try flatwounds, they might be just the thing. They sound wonderful on a Telecaster too.
Nice! Yeah, I’ve always preferred flat wounds on a p-bass, never thought about it a guitar!
Great video, thanks for sharing! At some point the "snakepit" behind my desk / rack is totally annoying. So I started watching studio setup videos. Great idea with these "cable management things" ... looks like a cable duct (no native speaker, hopefully you know what I mean) but with all the openings at the side. This is great! But I got lot's of other cool inspiration. Thank you very much!

@Rob Hill fantastic work mate. Great studio and really well shot video. I have a fuji Xt30, how did you get those bokeh shots at different ranges? Was that with the Viltrox lens?
All shot on a Viltrox 23mm ƒ1.4 and 33mm ƒ1.4 - both great lenses and about a shallow as you'll get on a Fuji. I've also used really cheap close-up diopters on the equipment shots as the Viltrox's don't focus that close! Also have a Fuji 16mm ƒ2.8 for the wider stuff, but not that great in the shallow depth department.
25:34 ----> what we use to do in the 80s, was cook the strings for a few minutes in hot water
when they sounded too dull.
The great thing was that that really helps, for if you want to record demo's BUT ...
they dull down really really fast after that.
So that could help if you want that sound.
We used this trick a lot in the old days. :-)

I ran a recording project studio for 22 years where I composed for (and recorded) singers
and instrumentalists mainly in the 80s and 90s in the Netherlands.
SSL UC1 and UC8 are fantastic mixing controllers

Nice vid mate. FYI UPS stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply, rather than Universal. Theyre pretty much a necessity in places where mains isnt stable, to regulate frequency variations, surges, overcome mains loss and some cases activate generators, whilst providing the power bridge between the mains off and generator on.
@robhill if you don't like the bright acoustic guitar string sound you should check out the "silk and steel guitar strings". they're warm sounding. perfect for recording!

I saw a lot of suggestions for fader controller. From the way you have it set up, you're looking for something small to fit right under the monitor controller, so all the larger ones (which is most of the good ones) are not relevant. I saw someone suggest the Monogram CC, I'll add in the SpecialWaves Modular controller. but the keys aren't sunken like the korg one. for that I think you won't have a choice but to buy some fader caps or build one (which with your design and crafting skills shouldn't be an issue).

yeh many years ago, i bought 100m roll of unbalanced shielded cable for guitars and patch cables, and roll of mic cable. its handy to know soldering and hobby electronics if your into home studios. From learning to solder cables lead me to pedal and amp/cabinet building, mic modding, circuit bending and repairs. Saved a fortune, and more importantly you can maybe achieve a sound that noone else will get using custom gear. On the down side once you go down the electronics rabbit hole, you may find yourself spending less time on actually producing any music..just tinkering all the time..god its addictive lol. Anyways, I've never made a cent from my studio in the 22 years I have had it, purely for the love of music and I prefer to get paid with alcohol (beer and rum are currency to me) from friends and aquaintances who drop by .. I think theres worse ways to spend your free time :) Nice job on the studio. like and subbed and I will check out your other stuff.

Hey mate! Elixir Polyweb Coated acoustic guitar strings will get you where you want. I'm the same way as far as taste in darker acoustic recordings. Because they're coated, they really won't get fuzzy and oxidize for a quite some time. I change them about once a year often. Awesome video, cheers!

Love it Rob - consider me subscribed :) I'm a big fan of what you've created with westwood, used them on all kinds of projects (thank you for those!). Also a big fan of your studio, looks amazing! I'm currently running on an ikea hack of a studio desk, looks great, but has a little wobble and totally get where you're coming from on wanting it to be solid and, I guess more authentic! Your attention to detail is admirable by the way, I have only one 3 year old boy, and I can barely string a sentence together by the end of most days! haha
Not sure what you're planning for content on this channel, but I'd love to know more about your music and journey so far. Always a fan of what you write on the walkthroughs, you have a certain sound which I really love.. kind of dark, and weirdly at times reminds me of Jonny Greenwood and the Doves (at least when I last listened to them some 5+ years ago!).. anyway, sounds great, and I'd love to know what you get up to outside of Westwood!

for fader controller have you tried the launch control xl...i have it and i love it. im also looking at a Behringer BCF2000 they are kind of big but its motorized so it will remember where you left them in different projects. I hear they are a little noisy when moving around alot but for just setting it and being able to recall i dont see it as an issue.
