Hints of Orange and Cinnamon! Easy FIG & WALNUT COOKIES Recipe

  • I tried a selection of cookies from a famous bakery in Bodrum, Turkey called Yunuslar Karadeniz. But more than the nut shortbread, or halva-filled phyllo parcels, I especially enjoyed the soft fig and walnut cookies, which was often served with afternoon tea.
Follow along with my own take on the recipe - cookies that are just as much an energy booster as they are delicious! And they happen to be dairy-free and gluten-free!
    --------
    • Recipe •
    Makes about 2 dozen cookies
    Prep time: Under 15 minutes
    Cook time: 20 minutes
The cookies will keep for up to 5 days in an airtight container on the counter, or they can be frozen for up to 3 months.
    --------
    • Ingredients •
8 oz (240 g) dried figs, cut in half
    2 tea bags
    1 cup (100 g) walnut halves
    3 Tbsp (27 g) sesame seeds
    ¼ cup (75 g) honey
2 tsp finely grated orange zest
    ½ tsp ground cinnamon
    3 large egg whites
    --------
    • Directions •
    1. Place the figs in a heatproof bowl with the tea bags and pour enough boiling water to cover them. Swish the figs around once or twice and leave in the liquid until they cool almost to room temperature, about 15 minutes.
    2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°F) and line 2 baking trays with parchment paper.
    3. Drain the figs and remove the tea bags (save the tea for fig iced tea, if you wish). Place the figs in a food processor and add the remaining ingredients. Purée the mixture until it forms a smooth, soft paste.
    4. Spoon the fig batter into a large piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe rosettes that are about an inch (2.5 cm) across onto the prepared baking trays. Bake the cookies for about 20 minutes until they can be lifted easily from the baking tray. Cool the cookies on the trays before packing to store.

Thank you Anna. I can always count on you. My neighbor let me have the figs on her 2 trees. So I’m definitely making these cookies for my Christmas cookie exchange. I like to add something new every year. And they’re healthy!

I wonder what would happen if you tried making a version with dates instead of figs?

I crossed the sea from Galippoli to the Aegean coast of Turkey. Canakkale, Ayvalik, Cesme Kusedasi and Bodrum. One of my best vacations ever! I'll definitely making these!❤❤❤

WOW I have a fig tree and have wanted to find recipes! Sounds like I’ll have to investigate other regional recipes using figs. Thank you so much Anna!! I really enjoy watching your videos! Say would dried apricots and pears work in place of figs?

Sounds tasty. I use toasted walnuts in my pesto-seems to add extra flavor than pine nuts.

    These cookies look delectable!
Can’t wait to try the recipe.
Question: Will 2 eggs work instead of three egg whites?

You'd be better off splitting the recipe into thirds and making a 2/3 batch, rather than cutting the egg whites alone.

Lovely change and so simple. Being a dark cookie what’s the best way to tell when they are done and not over baked?

Well, I am trying cookie recipes for this Christmas. :) I intend to bake a variety for my neighbors too. Coming back to the Fig and Walnuts cookies - if you make the cookies bigger, which looks amazing like a rose, do you have to bake it longer than 20 min? I have tried them today, still baking, I made them bigger and I increased the oven time to 25 min at 350F. Cookies smell super nice and I am looking forward to taste them! I have noticed the sesame seeds did not blend, and they appear white in the cookies, which I do not like. I am not sure, can I replace sesame seeds with tahini?

    • @NejiRaven

The sesame is there to be partly whole for texture and appearance. If you don't like them you'd be better off leaving them out or using black sesame seeds. Tahini is very thick so you may throw off the texture using it.
