I'm 64 years old and never been a runner. Started September ish last year and did my first 'long run' yesterday. 11km. Walked a bit, ran a lot and felt really really great. 11.02km in 1hr 28mins. Love watching your channel.
I have only started running for 3 months and started my 5k with a time of 36:49 and this morning I ran a 28:53 all thanks to you!! Thank you soo much for helping me fall in love with running, you are the best!!
Having taken up running only two months ago, I'm running my first 10k race tomorrow. It's in Shropshire, so promises to be super hilly too. Success to me will be finishing.
I set 3 goals for a race. First is easy. That way if life gets in the way or get a minor injury I can still achieve it. Second is harder but still achievable if everything goes well. Last is very difficult almost impossible. Requiring perfect conditions and everything. As long as I can complete the first goal I’m happy. Anything after that is a bonus.
For me, running success is a combination of things.. Its coming home smiling because I got out and moved freely, it's knowing I can sign up for ultras and barring injury will complete.. Its that high of cardio effort... I have realised that for me it's admitting that I can't stand city marathons and accepting that my space is trail distance.. So I guess in a nutshell.. Success is finding your running groove and then growing in that space x
I always have 3 goals. The first is one that, if I don’t achieve it, would be really disappointing e.g finish the race. The second is achievable, but will require hard work, eg PB. The final is aspirational…something that, if everything goes perfectly, might happen, but won’t disappoint if I fail to achieve. I just ran the Gold Coast Half marathon and my goals were 1. Finish, 2. PB (previous 2:16:53), 3. Sub- 2 hour. Happy to say I achieved all 3, finishing in 1:57:33, so a VERY successful day!
Success to me is getting out the door and going for a run, of course i strive for better times, further distances but if im consistently running a few times a week thats a success and what i enjoy doing.
One success I realised this year after 5 years of running is that I can run paces with 30-40 bpm less heart rate than in the beginning. I feel like I really have different gears now I can shift through. That's nice. In the beinning as soon as I started running my heart rate was instantly in the 150s. I couldn't get much higher and certainly not lower. Speaks for a lot of adaptation and muscular development. That makes me happy. PBs are a side effect of that development.
I had to type The Running Channel Podcast to get it to appear in the list. When I typed The Running Channel, I got a lot of other podcasts listed but not you amazing bunch. So I think I need special kudos for the effort it took to cast the vote given British Podcast Awards search engine is poorly optimised
I used to feel incredibly nervous at the start of a race when I first started. I’ve now got to the point where I don’t feel any. I just think to myself ‘if I don’t get the time today, this race will still improve me so that I will get it another day’ Although I can see how ‘another day’ doesn’t really help if you’re doing the race for a Running Channel video
It's interesting what Sarah was saying about being scared before a race, because I would say that excitement/nervousness is what enables me to run faster than I ever could if it was just a training run
success for me is being healthy and having an able body to be able to do what i love. im a hybrid athlete, 35 years old 6'1 and 95kg i lift in the gym 3 times a week and run 60-75km a week and im so thankful to be healthy injury free for years now.
Had my first long run with my dogs for the 1st time since injury in january. Their enthusiasm is contagous and I went with the flow, who needs Z2 training anyway. :D Smiles over miles.
On nerves / fear.... Something i trick myself with is the bodies reaction to fear and anxiety is the same as feeling excited (fast breathing, sweating, increased blood pressure ..... So when your stomach goes just think "im feeling excited"
In the last year I’ve ran 5 half marathons and minus one that I party paced and one being my first half the others have had very similar times and my best friend told me how amazing it is that I’ve been as consistent as I have been and I needed to hear that because I was trying to pb my last race and I missed it by 16 seconds and I was so mad but changing perspective was huge and I wouldn’t have realized that without her saying that
For me success on a run is meeting my goals. Maybe keeping a low heart rate. Achieving a progressive run with negative splits right through or maintaining the speed of my intervals right to the end of a set. For a race it's all about effort. Did I give it my all or did I just hold back too much from lack of confidence. If I look at my watch and see zone 4 all the way round and pushing into zone 5 at the end that's good enough for me!
I have a 10k PB attempt this weekend, but having been ill for over a week has meant missing a week of a training block. I was so worried, I was thinking about pulling out of the event. After talking myself down, I have to go, do my best and enjoy it. Whether a PB is on the cards or not, the success is completing 8 solid weeks of training, which shaved over a minute off my 5k PB.
Ah that's good to know as that's what I'm doing !! No marathon this year so thought I'd try faster stuff to help me I do my next one! Let's hope it works 🙏 😊
There's a simple answer: "You achieve a goal you set yourself." All runners set themselves goals: I want to lose fat (I am 20kg overweight. I wat to lose 10kg), I want to get fit, I want to do park runs, I want to run 5k/10k/half-marathon/marathon/etc.
Amazing episode, as always! 😊 I wonder if Rick would benefit from using the Lifestyle training plan in Runna. I haven’t tried it, but I expect it stretches the training period over a longer period and has lower build up week on week. Which would give more time for the body to get used to the load.
I know you all joke about this podcast being a chore, but I think if it was an hour and a half it would still be too short :). really like the show and I just started listening and running about a month ago. How do I submit a question?
Hi. I have also had difficulty in voting for your podcast, which I was eventually successful. When I opened up the website and searched your name it didn't appear, yes I did the full title. Scrolling down the page I ensured I was actually on the listeners' choice page. Still didn't work. What did work was typing the channel name without spaces between the words. I don't know why this was the only way I could find your channel because with the spaces lots of other channels popped up. So don't give up folks, keep trying. Phew I am off out for a long slow chillest run now.
I set race goals ahead of a training block, if training goes well, like Andy I’m tempted to push them and my last race was slightly disappointed I didn’t meet my revised “A” goal, even though I smashed my HM PB.
Oh, Sarah's nerves resonate so much! I've found that I enjoy the most, when I train through a race. 5k is the speed session for the week, HM is the long run. I've tried to select my first 100k ultra and failed, because the stakes are just too high. Can we put extra pressure on Sarah and film her mental journey? (Sorry, Sarah)
I agree with athletics being under sold in the UK. When at school I represented at all distances, which made for interesting juggling. It is because of this I enjoy watching it. I get the pre-race nerves just watching. My body is invested in it. Does that make sense?
Q for anyone who has experience: I’m running my first official 5K in 3 weeks. I’m already ready (i.e. I can comfortably run about 8K at ~10:56…slow i know but that’s where I am). But i know I won’t have time or be in a place where I can do much training over the next 2 weeks. What can I do to maintain my running fitness and should I be concerned about losing 5K readiness with 2 weeks of potentially little to no actual running and very little time for other training either?
I ran the Sydney HM in 1.41 ( a personal best by 2 1/2 mins). 6 weeks later I ran our local HM in 1.39, yet the Sydney race felt more successful. Maybe something about running well in a big city race. Maybe it's just the vibe.
Does this mean you guys are officially signed up for Malaga now?! We’re travelling over from the UK to do it too - See you there! 🤩 I’m doing the full and my husband’s doing the half. It’s a beautiful city if you haven’t been!
Rick! You are not alone: I, too, experience outrage out of all proportion to the offense whenever I hear people using speakerphones or playing audio in public. UNCIVILIZED, no?!😡😂
You should look into a 'wierd' dutch marathon preparation schedule, where the longest run is only 14k. It's called Sportrusten. Thousands of people have been successful using that. The idea is that the usual 30k long runs have too much impact on the body especially of a slower runner. You do 2 runs at marathon pace every week, 1 very slow run and 1 speed session. There's less of a taper at the end. I'm doing this for Eindhoven marathon in October because with the classical schedule I got injured twice while training. See how this goes.
Can you guys make a video where you do an everyday object athletics tournament? Things like the stick throw, the wellie wang and jumping fences in a park...
I have never run in my life - I find it hard to just start running at a light jog for more than 30-40sec it’s been 4 weeks since starting ? And I feel it’s not improving does it get better ? Do u need a coach or can I do it myself
I work in a job where I see a lot of pain and serious illnesses, so being able to get out in the fresh air and run is a priceless gift to me. For me success is simply setting a realistic goal and then working towards it. Run 5k, get a sub-20. Move onto 10k, get a sub-45, then a sub-42. Increase cadence by 5 per minute, then another 5.
I was wondering if you are going to cover the mass marathon at Paris that is happening at night in between the women’s marathon and the next day men races
